I've seen some recent discussions on here regarding the Pacific Coast

Highway, so I thought I'd remind the long-time list members and inform

the "newbies" that my travelogue of my trip up the coast in April 2004

is still in the files section of the group. The file is

named "Travelogue, Portland" because I was heading up to the Historic

Roads Conference in Portland, OR on that trip.

Paul Bunyon, and Babe, are down Maine bred and born!!!

Despite the claims of other areas. In fact if you

look at a map of the coast of Maine you will find

Penobscot Bay down near Searsport/Stonington/Acadia NP

area. This bay, legend tells us, was formed by Pauls

baby cradle rocking on the waves of the Atlantic

Ocean. His mother used to put him in his cradle and

anchor it out to sea a bit to let the waves to the

rocking. The wash also formed the craggy coast line

you see today from Kittery to Eastport!!!

Paul had to move further west after he cut most of

the trees in the state. Another legend has it he and

Babe were playing together one day and Babe started

pawing the earth and created Mt. Katahdin up in Baxter

State park.

Have a great day, safe and happy travels.

Hey,

If you take a little side trip off 101 to 126, the road with many bridges, stop

at The Blue Whale Yachts, Great Chowder.

I can't remember the town, actually I don't think it is a town.

If you are in Eugene, a tour of the University of Oregon is worthwhile. There is

also a great Black Angus Restaraunt just off campus close to a Quality Inn,

Great Prime Ribs. Rustic decor charming staff. Can't remember the complete name.

Traveling through the Yakama Valley is great, bread basket of the Nation, they

grow everything there from Asparagas to Hopps.

beckyrepp <becky@mockturtlepress.com> wrote:

Hi,

You are absolutely correct--that 101 is filled with beautiful scenery along

Oregon's coast. We've traveled it MANY times.

The lighthouse tour can begin at the very northern tip of Oregon's coast with a

tour of the Lightship Columbia and the adjacent musuem in Astoria, OR. Many

of the Lighthouses are open to the public--some have tours. Two of the

lighthouses in Newport, OR are featured in the Autumn 2004 issue of

AMERICAN ROAD. Some of the lighthouses on the coast you can really only

get photographs of, but all are spectacular in their own way. My favorite, is

probably Terrible Tilly--(Tillimook Lighthouse)--a few miles off the coast.

Bring

your binoculars.

Be sure to stop at Mo's (there are 5 Mo's locations along the OR coast) for

some of the BEST chowder on the West coast--many superstars travel to

Oregon just to satisfy cravings for the stuff.

The Pig-N-Pancake is an Oregon specialty, too. You'll find a Pig-N-Pancake

in Seaside, Oregon. Best breakfasts--but, be prepared to wait in line on

Sunday mornings! Stop in at Flashback (a nostalgia gift shop and soda

fountain) in Seaside, too. Tell Marjorie and Gary that we said hello. An

absolute MUST in Seaside is the Aquarium--constructed in 1924 as the

Seaside Baths and Natatorium. Tell Keith--the manager that we sent you. FYI,

there's an article on Seaside, OR in the US 101 department in the Spring

2004 issue of AMERICAN ROAD.

In Washington, there are so many great places I have a hard time knowing

where to start. If you are traveling 101 in Washington you will undoubtedly

want to spend time on the Olympic Peninsula. I recommend taking a ferry from

Edmonds to Kingston--on a clear day you'll get some of the most spectacular

views of the Olympics (there are many clear days in the Summer--winter,

however, is another matter!).

When you disembark from the ferry you'll need to take Washington Hwy 104

to US 101. At the intersection of US 101 and Washington 20 you will come to

Burger Heaven (actually namd Fat Smitty's). Arrive HUNGRY. This is one of

the biggest and best burgers you'll find. We have yet to find one that we like

better. Tell Smitty that you heard about him from AMERICAN ROAD (there's

an article on his place in Summer 2003 issue--which we no longer have

copies of). If you are interested in reading it-let me know and we'll figure

something out. I know there is an article coming up in the next issue on Sol

Duc Falls--which is probably too late for your trip--but, it is definitely a

MUST

SEE. Don't just go to the mineral pools--be sure to take the hike out to the

actual falls--they are beautiful--especially when the sun hits them just right

and a rainbow forms.

There are many more places to see -- and I could go on and on. Let me know

if you are interested in more info.

Hello and thanks for letting us join your group. We were wondering if

any of you know if the best steak restaurant in Kentucky named Rock

Castle Steak House over looking Hwy. I75 is still open. My husband

usually does not eat steaks, but this place had the biggest, juiciest,

tastiest steaks we have ever eaten. They said that the steak we got

would feed one person, it was so large that we both ate it and still had

left overs. We saw 4 people set down and try to eat a steak for two,

they had left overs also. If it is still open we highly recommend eating

there.

Most of it is currently MD-355. I had not realized that it was formerly

We just got back from a trip to Washington. We took the loop around

the Olympic Penninsula (mostly US101). The weather was gorgeous and

there is very little traffic on weekdays. If you get a chance go the

Beach 4 which is part of the Olympic National Park on the western side

south of Forks, WA. The tidal pools were fascinating.

Some of the other versions of Get Your Kicks on Route 66 have been

altered too (though not quite as bad as this one!)...

-More than one artist has referred to Kingman as "Kingsman"

-The Surfaris' version references Detroit - no clue where that came

from

-Brian Setzer's version is cool; it morphs Bobby Troup's song with

Nelson Riddle's; but there's one area where he sings: "...Flagstaff,

Arizona, don't forget Winona; Bartsow, Reno, San Bernardino...." It's

all nice and well that Reno rhymes with San Bernardino, but come on!

So, if Perry Como forgot Kansas, there's always the addition of

Michigan and Nevada to the list of Route 66 states!

Tim - It sounds as though you have this Columbia River Highway down pat!

Guess I should head up there and let you drive while I take in the

sights. I only made it through that area once barrelling along I-84 from

Portland to The Dalles rushing to a late appointment...I missed all the

good stuff.

regards gas prices, just wondering what the actual cost per mile

of driving is these days.

people see the gas prices because it's right in front of them

and it's obvious but to run a car takes more than that of course

cost of purchase

depreciation

insurance

licensing

repairs

routine maintainence

misc. (whatever that might be, an American Road subscription?)

and of course, gasoline, petrol, go juice

so if your car gets thirty MPG and gas is $3/gal the cost

of gas is ten cents per mile, if you get twenty MPG then

the cost is fifteen cents per mile and so on.

say for example you drive a car for five years and all of the

costs except gasonline total $30K. if you drive the national

average of 10K miles per year for those five years that

comes to 50K miles at a cost of 60 cents per mile, then

add the cost of gas as above and it goes up to 70 or 75

cents per mile.

so it looks like gasoline is about 20 or 25 percent of the

cost of driving if you have a newer car. These are just

round figures but maybe they will put the price of gas

into some perspective.

anyways I have always thought that regardless of the price of gas

here in the USA we will just keep on driving until the last drop of gas is

gone...

p.s. check out the gas prices worldwide, anywhere from

12 cents a gallon in Caracas on up to 5 and 6 dollars per

in many other countries.

I have a question for everyone here at the American Roads

group. Anyone cancel, alter or delay a road trip this

summer due to the price of gasoline? Here on the East

Coast it hovers around 2.50 to 2.60/gallon as of this

email. Could be ten cents more tomorrow. And I know it's

more in places like California. You Californians seeing a

price of 3.00/gallon yet?

I'm curious....is the need to travel by car so strong that

it doesn't matter if we pay 15-20 dollars more per fillup

than at this time last year? It doesn't to me....I'm

making a 1500 mile round trip to Illinois during the second

week of September. I will make more judicious choices when

I drive locally, but I ENJOY driving and seeing this big,

beautiful country. Can't see it from a plane. That's

it in a nutshell for me. I suspect I will hear similiar

opinions...lol.

Matt,

From the looks of the traffic here in southern Maine

on that parking lot we call U S Route 1, people aren't

putting off traveling. What is happening is they are

going to where they want to go, and then not moving

very far, nor are they spending on the things tourists

buy - stuffed lobster sales in this area are down

dramatically!!!! LOL

I also am planning my yearly trip to Memphis, but in

Dec so gas prices may be down - which is 1400 miles.

At the 25 mpg the '92 Buick I'm driving that comes out

to around $140 @ $2.50 a gallon - not all that much

beyond reason, but still that's around $40 or $50 that

I won't have to spend. Perhaps I'll just run for it

doing 11 hours a day and make the trip in 2 days

instead of 3, thus saving a motel night. There's the

$50 or so for gas.

I think people are going to go where they want, when

they want, until the price gets beyond reason -

wherever that is. They'll just plan things a little

better.

Happy and safe travels.

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems,

I saw it go from $2.29 to 2.69 in Colorado and Kansas 2 weeks ago while on

a trip on US50. It was 2.92 to 3.12 in Vail last week. Currently it is

ranging 2.50 to 2.60 in the Kansas City area.

Matt,

My car needs at least 91 octane so (for me) gas is more like $2.70-

$2.80/gallon right now (SouthCentral PA). I commute about 40 miles

each day and about 26-40 miles on the weekend. I could sell my house

and buy one closer to work, but that would cost much more than the

increase in gas. I just re-adjust my household budget and move on

with life. I don't believe a change in $.50-$1/gallon (works out to

about $10 extra a week for me) is enough to cause anyone to re-

structure their lives significantly. Most people can find that

difference in their finances real easy (just take a look in your

check book or charge card statements to see where the money is

currently going). Now maybe if gas prices reach $4/gallon or more...

I've been driving a lot less. That means cutting back on day trips and

combining errands.

I drive a Hyundai Accent. Last month was the first time in my life I've ever

had to spend 20.00 to fill up my tank. Previous cars included a Geo, a Ford

Escort and an old VW Beetle.

Unfortunately I am retired and it has put a crip on travel. If they

would have a moratorium on state and local taxes it would bring the

price of gas down but the politians would never do

that. --- In

I believe people are still traveling despite the gas because the

prices really started rising just as summer was starting. As for

next summer, there may be drastic change, we'll just have to wait

and see.

As for commuting, I do 62 miles each way, live in Reading, PA and

travel to Philly suburbs. My gas bill was $475, up from $395 the

previous month for 2 cars. Interviewing for another job on Monday

but it's still cheaper then moving here where house prices are well

over 300K and taxes are out of site.

It's in the "images from the road" file. Unfortunately I don't have

My question: Is this a recent photo? I'm interested if that early

The creator is airfrogusmc. Display the album in list mode and it show this

and some other stuff. BTW, looks like quite a few of the pictures in that

album still have fairly large full size copies. Plus they all show pretty

recent modified date. Is that your doing or airfrog's?
