If I had a week to kill and didn't want to stray too far from northern Ohio,

I'd do what I've done several times before and head for Knox and Holmes

County. My daughter attended college at Kenyon in Gambier (Knox County) so I've

spent a good bit of time in those beautiful pastoral rural counties, and loved

every minute of each trip. It's Amish country, farm country, home to many small

and picturesque towns, and with some nice little motels and B&Bs. Mapping

routes through this area on the small back roads is easy because the area is

crisscrossed with them. Some further info on both counties can be found at:

That's right Jennifer, they're near Gardner; just

northeast of it. I think they technically would be in

Braceville. But Braidwood is right near there too, as

is Godley. All those former coal towns line up with

each other in that area.

But regardless it's just south of Joliet, Elwood and

Willmington on the original alignment of Route66. I

drive through there between every week to three weeks.

Anyone interested in me taking and linking the Burma

Shave pics next time I go through?

My daughter and I stopped at the Pioneer Auto Museum

in Murdo - what a collection.

We also stopped at the 1880's Wild West Town museum

(Population 170 Ghosts, 9 cats, 3 dogs, 3905 rabbits -

as they advertise) and that was equally good. I'm not

sure exactly what town it's in - or if there is even a

town there, except for the 1880's town. As I recall

it's well marked from the interstate. There was a

saloon there where you could dress up in costume and

be served root beer by the marshall - six gun and all.

We didn't go that far - but there were a couple young

ladies that dressed up in dance hall costumes. Really

looked like we'd stepped back in time.

Happy Traveling

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems,

but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

A half week radius from Cleveland covers a lot of territory.

For starters there are some good official Ohio byways nearby. The Canal Way

immediately comes to mind or you could get a jump on the next issue of AR by

checking out the Amish Country Byway. Those and others at:

http://www.ohiobyways.com/

The Lincoln Highway and the National Road are both fairly close. You could

follow one of them through Ohio and add some PA and/or IN for proper sizing.

There is scenic OH-7 and US-52 along the Ohio River. Heading east there some

nice drives to be had in PA & NY. US-6 & US-62 are two that I've driven (on

recommendations from group members) and enjoyed. Plenty to the west, too. If

you're a car person and the 18th happens to be part of your schedule, the

Woodward Cruise is happening in Detroit on that date.

Where you want to go depends, of course, on what you want to see. With your

starting point and schedule you have a variety of scenic routes and plenty

of history from many periods to chose from. If you have some specific

interests, let us know. Maybe the group can come up with some ideas for

satisfying them.

Hi Sarah. I'm down in Ashland. How about doing a run around Lake Erie. Head

north through Michigan and Mackinaw City and then south east through Ontario and

come back through Buffalo ?

Where you want to go depends, of course, on what you want to see. With your

starting point and schedule you have a variety of scenic routes and plenty

of history from many periods to chose from. If you have some specific

interests, let us know. Maybe the group can come up with some ideas for

satisfying them.

Sure!

With as many times as I have been there, I have never taken photos of

the signs, though I think I have video of it from my first 66 trip in

2000. I believe there are some signs in the same area but in the

We just returned from a 4300 mile trip Pittsburgh to Denver, north to

Wyoming, then back through South Dakota. At the CO/WY border, stayed at the

Terry Bison Ranch in one of three modern cabins, a very peaceful place.

(They also have a century-old bunkhouse and an RV park.) You can ride an old

school bus through some of their 2,500 bison. It?s along the old CO Lincoln

Highway Loop, now mostly overlaid by I-25.

In Custer, SD, the Rocket Motel is just one of many vintage, neon-sign

places on US 16/Mt Rushmore Road. Just west of it is Flinstone?s Bedrock

Village kiddie park; just east of it is, well, you can guess by the road

name it?s about a 20 minute drive past the Crazy Horse Memorial carving

and through the stunning scenery of Black Hills National Forest.

After a visit to Dinosaur Park overlooking Rapid City, it was SD 44 into the

Badlands, through tiny Scenic, then we drove gravel roads through the grass

prairies up to Wall Drug. Then it was back into the Badlands to stay in a

restored yet updated 1930s cabin with knotty pine interior at Cedar Pass

Lodge.

We had lots of fun and met great people, but if there is a down side to

long-distance travel, it?s bad customer service, mostly restaurants but also

at fuel stops and lodging. Independents are usually better, but some of

those and the chains, one after another, just don?t care much about

cleanliness or service. We started wondering how many more restrooms there

could be with empty paper towels and toilet tissue. Sadly, the answer was a

lot.

My son is passing through that area now and I'm starting to consider a trip

there for next year. My initial thoughts are to cover just about the same

area as you did. Seems like there are a significant number of attractions in

a relatively small area (after the drive halfway across the country:-),

Since you didn't comment on Corvettes in Spearfish, you must have just

missed the Black Hills Corvette Classic. It was July 13-16 and there should

have been a few hundred 'Vettes running around the area.

Dear Sarah, I have a suggestion...since you are travelling alone, I'm

going to tell you what I would do if it were me.

We started out from Toledo and drove straight thru to Ohio Amish

country - around Wooster. We shopped and ate at one of the

buffet/family style restaurants and hit all the gift shops (a female's

dream - if you have some money to blow). We made sure we hit the Amish

bakery before we headed out to Steubenville (for breakfast/snacks at

the hotel). Then headed across to New Philadelphia, OH (I believe) and

drove across a hilly stretch for about an hour. This is a scenic route

that goes through a LONG road surrounded by lakes and ponds, that on a

sunny day, just twinkle and refresh in the hot summer light. This road

ends up in the Steubenville, Ohio area.

We stayed at a hotel there that USED TO be the Holiday Inn and the

Ramada, I have to look up what it is now - that has a level below

ground that is all wide open, has a built in pool, and the sliding

glass door from the back for your hotel room leads out to the pool,

AND they have poolside delivery of cocktails and DAMON'S RIBS and

appetisers!! I LOVE this place. I have stayed there twice. I even took

my mom there abt 9 years back, and it was so relaxing. Got a good tan

too.

If you are interested in this route, email me, and I will look up

exactly what roads we went across, and the new name of the hotel in

Steubenville. I recommend it to anyone who would love the fresh air,

the feeling of adventure and freedom, and needs some time to relax

before they go back.

I have a question for you too, if you don't mind:

I have been to Cleveland many times, and have seen most of the sights

there, except for the Flats - should I make a trip there sometime when

I have a friend along? Is it worth a 3 hour drive to hit that area

(then add in some of the things I've already seen as well)? Is the

Flats just a bunch of bars, or is there more to it than that? My

favorite there is the Indoor Amusement Park that is only open 1/2 of

March and all of April. We used to hit that almost every year!

Let me know if you need more info, and I look forward to hearing what

you ended up doing. Maybe I'll try it myself!!

If you like football, a visit to the Pro Football Hall of Fame is a must. It's

in Canton only about 60 miles south of Cleveland right off I-77.

Hi All,

My wife and I leaving Sunday morning on Amtrak to Tuscaloosa. Staying

for a few days, and one day will do a road trip. I see that US 43 goes

north, and is a two lane road. Not many towns along the way. US 43/11

goes south to Demopolis then US 80 goes to Selma Alabama. Its mostly 4

lane, and has more towns along the way. (will be renting a Monte Carlo,

so crooked roads welcome!)

Does anyone have any ideas, experience with these two routes or areas?

Any info appreciated.

Jim,

I think the nearest Amtrak runs along the I-70, about four hours

North. We do however have the remains of the Denver and Rio Grande

Western RR, which, in the summer, runs daily from Durango to Silverton

up the Animas river valley. This is an unusual valley because it has

no road so it doesn't really have a place here. The only way into it

is by train or helicopter. If you ride a photographers special, the

train stops, lets people off and then reverses down the track before

doing a run by, just for the benefit of the camera. Good fun

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems,

but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

When I was growing up in Portland, Ore., way back in the early 50's,

that highway was our weekend entertainment. My dad loved taking us

for rides in the car and this drive was one of our favorites. I am

pretty sure that this was the old highway along the Columbia River

heading west from Portland. Since I was so young then, I am not

really sure but I do know that the interstate wasn't there then...I-80

is it?

Because we want to do the best for the Route, we need your comments and

suggestions on three issues:

2005 - San Bernardino - What did we do right? What could we have done

better?

Even though our festival will move to Albuquerque, the SB Rendezvous will

continue into it's 17th. year, and the organizers are always looking to improve,

so your comments could be helpful to them.

2006 - San Bernardino - September 14-17, 2006

Do you plan to come back? As an exhibitor? As an attendee?

Our EXPO had a stunning array of artists and authors, and the Rendezvous

committee is always looking to showcase talent.

2006 - Albuquerque - June 23-25, 2006 (Summit Meeting - June 22, 2006)

What do you want to see done the same as at previous festivals? What do you

want to see done differently? What do you want to see new for 2006?

I sincerely hope that you will take the time, to let us know how we can make

this work for all of us. I know that many of you shared thoughts with me

while you were in San Bernardino, and I thank you for that, but now I'm asking

you

to put them in writing and send them to me. The 2006 Festival is exactly

nine months away, a rather auspicious amount of time, don't you think?

Please send your comments to me by private email at bakerhab @ aol.com (no

spaces).

Trust me (yeah right) no one will take offense to any comment that you make,

so please be brutally honest, and, oh yes, complements are okay too.

I think that I did a pretty good job of keeping you informed about the SB

event, so look for frequent posts about ABQ2006.

Thanks and remember, We're changing our tune, to See you in June, in

Al-bu-quer-que!
