Here is a little update and some very important information for the Route 66

Community;

Todd Masinter the staff photographer for AAA was also the photographer that

was on the trip four years ago with Alan Rider the writer (not Steve Rider

from NY). So for those of you that met them then will at least know Todd.

The writer Dave Brackney and Todd are working on a NEW Route 66 map based of

their research taken from this trip. For those of you that were listed in

the first map you are aware of the impact it had on your business/location.

Each of you needs to contact them to be sure they stop at your locations or

you might get left out of the new version. Please share this with others

that should be on the map.

Also being that this is the Auto Club of Southern California and not the

national AAA doing the trip and map, if you want your state AAA to get

involved you need to assist in setting it up. The Southern California AAA

also owns the one in Texas and New Mexico, as well as Hawaii and Southern

California. By working with each of your states AAA you can become a

resource to them now and for the future. Remember they are driving a Mustang

and an Explorer both Ford products so work with the Ford dealers as well.

We will be having some events here in Southern California at a few of the

AAA offices that are on Route 66 such as Victorville, San Bernardino,

Upland, Pasadena and Santa Monica. More on this when the details are

available.

Let me know if you need any assistance or more information. For those of you

that are not aware here are a few more facts; AAA is one of our bigger

sponsors for the Rendezvous, our biggest is Stater Bros Markets Jack Brown

the CEO sets on the AAA board of directors and the last item; my last job

was with AAA.

Here It Is! My big Web project is done.

http://rwarn17588.wordpress.com/2006/06/09...the-cars-movie/

I think this will help get a few more travelers on the road. Once

"Cars" movie watchers get home from the film over the weekend and type

in "Cars" and "Route 66" into their search engines, they will find the

site (and they frequently do anyway) and be inspired to find the

real-life people that inspired the movie.

Suggestions and comments are welcome. Many thanks to the people who

helped me fill in the gaps.

Any good handhelds? That's what I'd be interested in.

Ron,

Mine isn't with me right now, but it's a small handheld, and although it's

quite rudimentary it seems to work well for geocaching. It was a gift, so I

doubt it cost very much. When I locate it (hmm..... shouldn't it be able to

locate itself??) I'll get back to you with the brand and specs, or you can

borrow it and see if it meets your needs.

The eTrex Legend C would be a great choice. I have the eTrex Legend

and love it. The "C" version gives you 3 times the memory, color

screen, and routing. Best price I've seen is $240 after a $50 rebate:

Ron,

I have the etrex Legend and been very happy with it. I used it last summer

when Charlene and I hiked into the Grand Canyon and it worked great for the

first 4.7 miles until we were into the narrow canyon walls. After 2 years,

the cost has come down about $100.00.

We just got back from seeing the movie. The whole family enjoyed it. They did a

great job on the scenery, buildings & signage . We decided we need the DVD just

so we have time to pick out everything they did in it. Nice that they

encompassed the Mother Road rather than just racing.

National Trust accepting nominations for 2006 List of

America's Dozen Distinctive Destinations

Washington, D.C. (July 18, 2005) - Since 2000, the National Trust for Historic

Preservation has worked with historic destinations across America to promote

their unique heritage as great travel destinations through its Dozen Distinctive

Destinations program. Each year the National Trust honors 12 communities

from across the country that offer authentic experiences. These destinations

offer striking alternatives to Anyplace, U.S.A. They have preserved their sense

of place and character, have dynamic downtowns, a strong commitment to

historic preservation and revitalization, interesting architecture, cultural

diversity, an economic base of locally owned small businesses, and walking

access for residents and visitors.

To give your favorite destination the recognition it deserves by nominating it

for the 2006 list of Dozen Distinctive Destinations, or to learn more about the

program, visit the National Trust web site www.nationaltrust.org/ddd or e-mail

dozen@nthp.org. Nominees should be recognizable locations, such as a

town, city, neighborhood, or region. Previous Dozen Distinctive Destinations

that were listed more than five years ago are invited to reapply for this

designation. All nominations must be received by the close of business on

Friday, November 4, 2005.

Sites that have been listed in the past include: Annapolis, Maryland;

Calistoga, California; Thomasville, Georgia; Natchez, Mississippi; Saratoga

Springs, New York; Oberlin, Ohio; Astoria, Oregon; Beaufort, South Carolina;

Burlington, Vermont, and Walla Walla, Washington.

TWO MONTHS, 12,000 MILES AND 32 STATES ON AMERICA'S TWO-LANE

HIGHWAYS

Now THAT's a ROAD TRIP! Two former television journalists recently traveled

cross country in search of Independent America to make a documentary

about what they found. Hanson Hosein, a former NBC news correspondent ,

and Heather Hughes, who has worked extensively as a television news

producer and anchor, began their journey on the West Coast in May. "More

than ever it seems like it's Independent America vs. Corporate Chain store

America," they note. "We're hunting for those pressure points." They've vowed

to make their entire trip without relying on interstate highways, corporate

chain restaurants, motels, or stores. Did they make it? They finished on July

15 and reportedly, they only stopped once at a Walmart for duct tape--out of

desperation.

The two plan to make a documentary, in time for release at the major film

festivals later this year. We will see if they discovered what AMERICAN ROAD

readers have known all along . . . that two-lane highways lead to the heart of

America!

ARE YOU SEARCHING FOR A GIFT?

Search no more. American Road is the perfect gift that they will enjoy all year

long! Order today by calling toll-free 1-877-285-5434, or order on-line

(www.mockturtlepress.com). We will send a gift notice—and we can

personalize it with a message from you! We also now have GIFT

CERTIFICATES (available in $5.00 increments)! They may be used by the

recipient to purchase subscriptions, back issues, or any item in the Hitching

Post.

them you saw it in AMERICAN ROAD!

I'm from The Columbus/Central OH Area. (Just East of

there in Licking County, just off US 40 and I'll be

moving back there.)

New Rome was an incredibly corrupt speedtrap for

years. It got a bad reputation for it. The revoking of

the charter was about 5-6 years ago.

That's fine. I haven't been through Collinsville for a week or so; I just

recall seeing the signs for it near the old Brooks factory where the bottle is

located.

Hmmmmmm. Sounds like Ludowici, GA. When Lester Maddox was governor he

had billboards put up at all the entrances to town, warning motorists

of the speed trap. As little respect as I had for that racist clown,

I had to give him points for that one.

Now that you mention it I remember several speed traps

in Georgia - Ludowci among them. Lester wasn't

governor when I was down there in the 50's - Marvin

Griffin (no, no, no - the talk show host was MERV

Griffin, lol) was governor.

Before you take that summer drive down the old two

lane black top, might want to check out this site -

Hi Brian,

Oh, ye of little faith!!!!!

Just outside of Alma, Arkansas, on the east side on

S 64 there are Burma Shave signs. I have the thought

in my head that they are private, something somebody

made and placed on their property. But, Burma Shave

signs are Burma Shave signs.

Happy Traveling.

Assuming that the actual New Rome municipality is no more, what became

of its land area? Is it now just an unincorporated blob, was it

annexed into an adjacent city (ie, Columbus), etc?

Well, we just returned from a few sweltering days in Beantown. Lots of cold

drinks & ice cream later and we're back in Jersey with a "cool" 90 degree day.

We got to Durgin Park for Yankee Pot Roast dinner & Tia's for lobster & chowda'

(& a cold beer!) lunch and both places were great. Thanks for the

recommendations. Couldn't get into Union Oyster House as they were packed with a

1-1/2 hour wait for dinner after the Duck Tour, also didn't get to a Sox game as

the games were all sold out. Planned to take the Fenway tour yesterday but they

had a 1 P.M. game so couldn't take the tour. Maybe next time for both, but after

walking Boston in July, I think our next visit will be in May or September!

Next month up to Kennebunkport & Boothbay for another dose of cholesterol.

Thanks again for the suggestions,

Fred

Sounds like Durgin Park. Honestly, I haven't been to Durgin Park in years

because the food quality has been (in my brutal opinion) lousy. It's great for

atmosphere, though, and I love sitting at the long tables with strangers. Tia's

is on Long Wharf, across from Quincy Market. You sit outside near the

marina...if they try to seat you on the highway side, ask to move! :) I know

Tia's as a hotspot for happy hour, so I had never actually EATEN there until

yesterday. I was pleasantly surprised. I would suggest it for lunch if you'd

like to avoid the drinking crowd.

crying :) can't recommend a place by name in maine...we tend to get our lobster

steamed for us at the grocery store here in boston & eat it at home w/ corn &

beer. :) we're spoiled & tend not to order lobster out! if you're staying

somewhere near a big-chain grocery store, you could have them steam for you...or

better yet, have them steam it, bring it home, take it out of the shell & put

it on the grill. YUM. of course, depends on where you're staying & the amenities

you have. :) have fun! melanie
