My wife and I will be flying to Salt Lake City in April to watch our son at

the Volleyball Nationals, and then are spending a few days at Jackson Hole.

What are suggested travel routes and possible sites en route. All

suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks.

Scott,

Are you planning on anything in regards to the casino in Gettysburg?

I drive through there on U.S. Route 30 on my trips between Uniontown,

Pa. (U.S. Route 40) and Philadelphia.

Most trips back and forth have been done on two lane highways, where

available.

I've exchanged emails with the folks at No Casino Gettysburg, and

pointed them toward the Lincoln Highway Association. I've also

mentioned to them that, if possible, they should send a

representative to the Historic Roads Conference to garner support

from the roads folks. The feedback from them on that last part was

that they have an important conference or meeting (I'm not at home

and can't access that email at the moment) that weekend and would

not likely be able to make it. I've told them to send me some

information that I could share with the roads folks and I'd pass it

along in Boston.

As for personal plans, mostly I want to help get the word out to the

roads folks about the proposed casino, and how important it is to

fight this issue. But it seems as though there has been little

response from most regarding this, at least publicly. I suspect

some have written the appropriate government officials, however, as

I know that quite a few people on here are fairly quiet about their

support of preservation issues. I, of course, have already written

my letters of support to the cause. I'd try to do more, if I could,

but it is difficult to do that from over 2500 miles away.

OK, I'll 'fess up. I'm largely responsible for this. I've spent the

last 18 hours or so e-mailing a news release about the Blue Swallow

Motel being up for sale to varying media around the country.

Roadside Peek, a really swell Web site about preservation, is the

first to spread the word. That's what I call a nice, quick turnaround.

Here's the link.

http://www.roadsidepeek.com

Here's the news release I've sent out. If you know of other places

that might be able to use it, have at 'er.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

From: Ron Warnick

918-445-7495

rwarn17588@yahoo.com

Feb. 21, 2005

The Blue Swallow Motel, one of the best-preserved historic motels on

Route 66, has been put up for sale, its owners have announced.

Hilda Bakke and her husband, Dale, who have owned the motel in

Tucumcari, N.M., since 1998, are selling it so they can help care for

a

seriously ill relative in Minnesota.

"Time to pass the baton," Hilda Bakke wrote on a Route 66 Internet

group.

The 12-unit motel, built in 1939, is known for its large, elaborate

neon blue swallow sign, extensive architectural neon, attached

garages and old-style dial telephones in the rooms. The late Lillian

Redman received the motel as an engagement gift in 1958 and ran it

for nearly 40 years.

The Bakkes purchased the motel shortly before Redman's death and

restored it. The Blue Swallow Motel is listed on the National

Register of Historic Places and received the 2003 Cyrus Avery Award

for the best restoration project on Route 66. It also is featured in

several books, including the recently released "Hogs on 66," a

collection of recipes and road lore from noted Route 66 authors

Michael Wallis and Marian Clark.

The asking price for the motel is $165,000.

The Blue Swallow Motel is one of the most-photographed sites on Route

66. Smithsonian magazine said: "The Blue Swallow may be the last,

best, friendliest motel in the country."

The Blue Swallow Motel is listed by Richard Randals of the New Mexico

Property Group in Tucumcari. Randals can be reached at

nmpg@plateautel.net or by phone at 888-461-4426. Visit the Blue

Swallow Motel's Web site at http://www.blueswallowmotel.com or the

realty group's Web site at http://newmexicopg.com for more

information about this historic

property.

The first wave of San Bernardino Rendezvous Information Packets are in the

3 part fold out, maps, information on the Steinbeck Luncheon, an overview of

all the latest and greatest changes for 2005, etc., etc., and my own personal

observations and directions. Good Luck with that!

Such a deal!

So, if you haven't requested your packet yet, it's not too late. Just send

me your snail mail address, (offline please) at bakerhab@aol.com, and I'll send

Saw this on the KTLA news this morning. The Union 76

ball signs have become an endangered species. Once

again corporate idiots want to kill a part of history.

I remember thinking the balls were cool when I was a

kid, and I know I'm not the only one. I even had a

Styrofoam version on the antenna of my first car, a

1968 Pontiac Tempest, when I was in high school. Take

a minute and sign the petition to save this slice of

Americana.

Gang,

Hello. I saw the following article in today's biz section.

I have heard of a few states trying or going this route, including

my own, Colorado. The fight here a bit has become the eminent domain

fight, meaning can the state take land from farmers to put in new

rail lines east of the front range out of suburban areas or not

give fair value for it. See below for article.

Do we see an effect on American Roads like an US 90 in Texas?

Anyone on the list in the know on this issue? What can we do as

roadies? I have this eerie feeling that moving rail lines

can only mean moving certain roads ie tearing up good 2 lane

highways. (ie US 40 here in Colorado)

I love progress but......not at the expense of good 2 lane

highways.

Just thought I would pose the question,

Dave Willman

66 Willy, from Colorado.

*******************************************************

Gov. Rick Perry said Friday that the state of Texas and Union

Pacific Railroad Co. have reached an agreement to move freight rail

out of densely populated urban areas.

"Relocating rail lines from crowded city centers will mean fewer

accidents at crossings, less hazardous cargo carried through

populated areas, greater efficiency in the movement of products from

the warehouse to the market and the potential benefit of acquiring

prime real estate for the development of new roads without tearing

down homes and businesses in the process," Perry said in a written

statement.

Perry said the relocation projects will boost the Texas economy and

will be part of overall plans to improve the state's transportation

system. He added that public-private partnerships, such as this one,

provide a solution to real transportation challenges.

Omaha, Neb.-based Union Pacific, the nation's largest railroad,

operates the Settegast and Englewood classification yards in Houston

that serve the petrochemical industry along the Texas Gulf Coast.

Perry said Texas has more railroad crossings than any other state

and leads the nation in vehicle-train accidents annually. Since

1984, there have been 5,500 vehicle-train collision related deaths

in Texas.

Hi Folks,

Thanks to Larry, Denny, Jerry, Jennifer, and all who sent a note wishing me a

happy BD. I should have known that Miss Graham would stir it up. It is very much

appreciated, though. Thank ya, thank ya, thank ya.

While I have your ear, I need some technical advice. My computer picked up a

variant of the CoolWebSearch / About Blank browser hijacker spyware and it is

giving me fits. I have the newest Norton Anti-Virus program, Earhtlink's Spyware

program, and another spyware software (Xoftspy), but cannot get rid of it. The

technicians tell me it is a self-evolving pest that has numerous variants and it

is very difficult to identify them all, much less design a way to kill them. Any

suggestions are welcome.

Finally, I need another favor. Director Pat Smith at the Oklahoma Route 66

Museum, which is state operated, is trying to get the powers that be to provide

funds to re-design their galleries, which are now 10 years old. She needs

letters of support. If you have a few minutes, please write a short letter of

support for the museum--you know, how great it is and how important it is to the

Route 66 community, how it draws tourism, etc. The only catch is that is must be

a hard copy with a signature sent via snail mail and she needs them by next

Thursday. Please address the letter "To Whom It May Concern" and address the

envelope to: Oklahoma Route 66 Museum, Atten: Pat Smith, 2229 Gary Blvd.,

Clinton, OK 73601. I can promise you she will be forever grateful.

Thanks again for the great birthday wishes!

For those of you also on the Roadside Fans list I apologize for the

double-posting.

There is an absolute gem of a diner located just off U.S. 6 in

Potter County, Pa., just east of the village of Coudersport. The 1954

Silk City was previously the Community Diner in Bethlehem,PA and after

closing as a viable diner, became a pizza place. The current owner

purchased it for $2000 after seeing a listing on the American Diner

Museum site. The cost for transporting the diner to Coudersport was

some $8000 and the work of restoring and preparing it for its new home

took some years, but the new owner wanted it down right. I visited

last Saturday and when I exited my truck in the parking lot, I saw

neon, stainless steel and heard the 50's music. Well, the inside is

as impressive as the outside. The walls, ceiling and flooring are

original, as is one counter- new stools and booths match the blue and

yellow color scheme perfectly. The booth jukeboxes are original from

the 50's, but not original to the diner. The non-stop 50's music comes

from satellite radio and the waitresses tap their toes while cooking

at the grill just behind the counter. They also wear saddle shoes.

The menu is pure 50's, food is good and you can get breakfast

"anytime." Ask your waitress for the photo album and you can follow

the construction. Also, there is an addition on the back, with 50's

memorabilia, local history items and photos from early days in

Coudersport and lots of tables for customers. believe me, this does

not detract from the diner itself and if they didn't have it they'd be

turning folks away - and it's a hoot back there - lots of neat things

to look at.

Here's the nitty gritty:

Hours: Mon-Tues-Weds: 6am-3pm

Thurs-Fri-Sat 6am-9pm

Sun 8am-3pm

Phone: 814-274-3399

Directions: Coming from the East on US 6, look for a Kubota dealer

and a small Plaza, Mill Creek Plaza, on the left. Turn left onto Ice

Mine Road between the Kubota dealer and the little Plaza (Hardware

store, Radio Shack) and the Diner is sitting at the back of the Plaza

parking area.

If you miss it and see the Coudersport Hospital, you've gone too far.

Coming from the east you will not pass through the village of Coudersport.

Coming from the west on US 6, once you pass through the village of

Coudersport, you will pass the Hospital on your left - from there it

is about 1 1/2 to 2 miles to the diner - again, look for the Kubota

Equipment dealer on your right - turn right there and look a little to

your left - the diner will be there, sparkling stainless and bright

neon. Enjoy!!

Cheers, Carol

Mr. Jim,

I would like a large pepperoni with jalapenos and extra cheese... oops, wrong

"Mr Jims".

If you have Windows XP, NT, or 2000 try Microsoft's AntiSpyWare (beta).

Download from their main page at www.microsoft.com . You may have to run it

several times.

Also, you can try Cool Web Search Shredder: CWShredder.exe -- it will run on any

Jim,

Back in the fun days of Win 3.1, 95, etc, I simply

saved everything I could save and formatted the hard

drive. I havn't done that in a long time - frankly,

the newer systems, ie, Windows XP, scare the daylights

out of me regards formating the hard drive.

Happy traveling.

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems,

but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

Jim,

I've been using the Microsoft AntiSpyware program for a few months now. It

seems to pick up a lot more than the Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE program I had used

earlier. And it's free. You can schedule it to run a full scan at a time when

you're off line.

Mr. Jim,

I would like a large pepperoni with jalapenos and extra cheese... oops, wrong

"Mr Jims".

If you have Windows XP, NT, or 2000 try Microsoft's AntiSpyWare (beta).

Download from their main page at www.microsoft.com<http://www.microsoft.com/> .

You may have to run it several times.

Also, you can try Cool Web Search Shredder: CWShredder.exe -- it will run on

any windows version.

Hi Folks,

Thanks to Larry, Denny, Jerry, Jennifer, and all who sent a note wishing me a

appreciated, though. Thank ya, thank ya, thank ya.

Jim,

I had a similar problem a few months ago. I utilized McAfee's free

stuff from AO(hel)L, downloaded Ad-Aware SE, and bought Spy Sweeper for

$29.95, which I think is the one that does the best job. My registry

was toasted last September when one of those critters got in my

old 'puter and made almost the entire system useless. Instead of having

it fixed, I went to Office Depot and got the Yugo of computers, an E-

machine, Canon printer, and 17" flat screen monitor for less than $400

after rebates. I was able to salvage what was on my old hard drive, but

the cpu is still sitting in my family room like a white elephant.

Of course it was just a couple months ago that I had another problem

with spyware infiltrating my system and that's when I utilized a

blitzkrieg of spy protection. Well worth the money...one of them scans

the entire system every Friday night at 8pm, and the Spy Sweeper will

scan any time I wish. Plus, they're always running, so I look at them

like guard dogs. And on top of that, the McAfee is overly paranoid

about downloading anything, as it asks me if I did or not, which I

guess is a good thing. But it's worked well together for a couple of

months now, as there's seldom any spyware following a scan of umpteem

thousands of files.

McAfee's Anti-Virus did a number on my system and I had to go into

SAFE MODE in order to delete it from my computer. I use the Stinger

virus program that McAfee provides for free. Spybot is also a safe

system for keeping out spyware.

If you--or a close relative--have traveled, worked, or lived on Route 66 and

have an interesting tale to tell about your experience on the road (whether

it's poignant, humorous, or amazing), please drop me an email at

witzelwords@yahoo.com with a quick description of your story. If we think it

would work for the book, we will set up an interview with you by telephone to

get the full story ... with all of the details.

Also, we would love to see vacation photos, family snapshots, instamatic

photographs, vintage slides, and other old/current images of the road and

the sights along it, too--taken from both the past, and the present. The

images do not have to be professional, although those are welcome, too.

Help us document Route 66 and see your stories and images in print! Any and

all assistance on this project will be much appreciated.
