The diner that I went to was directly on US 40 at a major

intersection with a stop light - US 40 went straight through the

center of Aberdeen.

If you come to Florida, among the many quirky sights-

Seaside, FL - a planned community that was the setting of "The Truman

Show"

Celebration, FL - a Disney planned community that proved they learned

nothing from watching "The Truman Show."

Road-y places -

Bridges - Sunshine Skyway, Tampa Bay; Florida Keys

Numerous brick highways can be found with a little looking.

Many highly rated beaches.

Tourist traps of every size -

From I-4 you can see the tall rides of Orlando attractions, the downed

Gooney bird with hanging flier at Fantasy of Flight , and bunch of full

sized dinosaurs (Dinosaur World) looking out over Interstate traffic.

Hey Chet, might copies of that be floating around anywhere to view?

Hmmm...a couple of pasties sound good right about now. We try to get up

there every couple of years & love the Mackinaw City/St. Igance region.

The bridge still scares the heck out of me just like it did 30-some

years ago as a 5 year old going over it the first time.

Today's STL Post-Dispatch includes a blurb which says, basically, that

the IL Department of Transportation has received various grants from

the U.S. Department of Transportation. These include:

a) $78,400 for Madison County's Great River Byway

B) $55,680 for the Great River Road which parallels the Mississippi

c) $25,000 for the Historic National Road (40) between St. Louis and

Terre Haute, IN. (This is an awesome highway that we love to

cruise.)....Bliss

I will be finished up in Santa Fe NM around May 22. From there I will continue

my trip,

with no particular destination, but I'm thinking of going up the west coast. I

am trying to

find some type of activity or event for Memorial Day weekend. I figure there

must be

something happening on Route 66 in the southwest, but I haven't been able to

find

anything. I can stay near NM, or travel westward, but so far I haven't found

anything. Any

leads would be appreciated. Thanks- Mary Schilpp

Hmmmmmm. I recall a Tigertail Avenue in Miami. I suppose it's still

there.

Knoxville (and probably a mess of other cities) has a corner of Church

and State.

One of my personal favorites, a suburban street near Fairbanks, Alaska

named Yellow Snow Road:)

And finally, a road in middle Tennessee, the name of which I'm

reluctant to tell in a family news group. I will say that when I

found it on a map, the first thing that went through my head was the

theme from "Deliverance". 'Nuff said:)

I am sure that other towns have this as well, but Berwick PA has 4 1/2 Street

between

Fourth and Fifth, and 5 1/2 Street between Fifth and Sixth. I guess they ran out

of names

and ideas early in the layout of Berwick.

Reminder: Booth space at the Route 66 80th. Anniversary Festival June

22-25, 2006, in Albuquerque, is FREE, for Artists, Authors, Collectors and State

Associations.

BUT, you do have to make a reservation to get a space! Reservation

information is available on the Festival website:

http://www.2006route66festival.com/newsletter/page5.html

[Text of website Booth Reservation Page]

Reservations for booths are now being taken. Please read the rest of

this page before you click to access the Booth Reservation Form.

Updated April 30th!!!

We have just found out that all booths will be inside the hotel, either

in the hall or in the ballroom. For vendors the cost is $150.00 for a single

booth. A double booth will be $270.00. There will be an additional charge of

$10.00 in you want a table and two chairs in your booth. Each additional table

will be $7.50. Additional chairs will be $1.00 each. Please indicate if you

want a table and two chairs or additional tables or chairs when filling out the

reservation form.

Because we really want all Route 66 Authors, Artists, Craftsmen with

not-for-sale Collectible Displays, and State Associations to attend this

Official

80th Anniversary Festival, we met with Jim Conkle and put on our thinking

caps to find a way we can offer free booths to Authors, Artists, Craftsmen with

not-for-sale Collectible Displays, and State Associations. As a result there

will be no charge for booths for Route 66 Authors, Artists, Craftsmen with

not-for-sale Collectible Displays, and State Associations. You must fill out the

booth reservation form and submit it to reserve you free booth. Otherwise we

will not know you plan to come and we will not have a reserved booth for you or

your association.

Authors, Artists, not-for-sale Collectible displays, and State

Associations booths will be set up near the vendors. Each will came with one

eight foot

table and two chairs. The depth of these booths will vary depending on what

the fire marshal will allow.

To help defray the cost of these free booths, we will have a Silent

Auction that will start at noon on Friday and run through noon on Sunday. Any

and

all donations for the silent auction will be greatly appreciated. Please

As this group knows, a Tin Can Tourist caravan is right now in the middle of

a trip along the National Road as part of the road's two-hundredth birthday.

Last night, I got a look at the caravan during its stop in Springfield,

Ohio. With severe weather warnings, wet pavement, and overcast skies, I felt

lucky for a rain free hour or so to get some pictures and visit with the

tourists. Some of those pictures are here:

http://www.dennygibson.com/oddment/tct_sf .

They are continuing on to Vandalia, IL, (schedule here:

http://www.tincantourists.com/hnr/ ) and I recommend a look at these rolling

pieces of history to anyone who can manage it. When the rain did begin to

fall, I took the opportunity to try out Joe's Grille and can also recommend

that for a good roadside meal.

Hi all....I've chosen to remove the posts regarding the Western Motel

in Shamrock, TX. That thread started out as a thread on another group,

and then it morphed into a thread that included nearly 40 recipients on

it, including the American Road group. Unfortunately a lot of the

people replying to it aren't on this list, and therefore the "chain"

was getting broken. Make sense? Didn't think so, but let's just say

we're "not going there" in regards to that thread. Note to those of you

folks in that e-mail distribution who are on the AR list, please remove

the e-mail address of the AR group on your e-mails prior to

hitting "reply all". Thanks in advance...

Troy, MO is indeed on US61. However, Route 66 barely misses Troy, IL...

Isn't Troy Mo on old Hwy 61? Not Hwy 66. BTW, I grew up in St Louis near the

intersection of Hwy 66 (Chippewa) and Hwy 67 (KIngshighway).

Yeah, New Rome is out of business:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Rome,_Ohio

and

http://www.legalaffairs.org/issues/January...gnon_janfeb05.m

sp

Now we can fill in the small gap in a Route 40 travel

without worrying about New Rome's speed trap.

I got stopped about 3, 4 years back just down the

road in New Jefferson - for not having my seat belt

fastened. I had stopped for lunch at the local Mickey

D's, or maybe it was BK - one of those and I was

stopping every so often to take pictures along the

road, had gotten out a couple times. So I just hadn't

fastened my belt there in town. Didn't get a ticket -

but did get a funny look when I explained what I was

doing!!! LOL

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems,

but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.
