Thanks Pat, nice digging. That must have been it.

So glad the memory banks are still, somewhat connected.

Wow Mark,

The Oldsigns occupation sounds like a great gig!

I feel like the early to mid century graphic artists, wrote the book

on the subject and the industry has hardly been improved upon

since. In another group, I know several Architects and Illustrators

who collect ephemera for reference in their work. The early travel

brochures are some of the finest examples of watercolor, pen &

ink and other media to be had, affordably.

Definitely called soda out here. I always called it pop when I was

growing up, but the adjustment to soda was pretty easy, especially

when I almost never drink the stuff. But there's something pleasant

about a good old-fashioned soda every once in awhile.

Let me know when you will be in the area. Maybe we can also meet up

for a great beer at Lucky Baldwin's Pub in Old Town Pasadena. It's

one of my two local watering holes. (The other is the newly-opened

Delirium Cafe, owned by the same people, but in the less-crowded

village of Sierra Madre.

Guest Pat B.

Hi all...this is for those of you not on the Route 66 e-group who

might be interested. Let's hope this grand lady falls into good

hands.

Pat B.

I don't know where to start...

Dale and I have been in Minnesota this past month, after his

terminally ill mother got out of the hospital to help her out. We

are going to move in with her and care for her as she makes the

final journey we all have to make. It is something we can help

with, so that she can continue to live in her home of 50+ years.

So we are closing the motel and putting it back on the market. It's

not as if we haven't put it up for sale before, but I feel this is

more urgent because we are not going to be able to keep it open

until we sell it. We are asking for the Route 66 community to help

us spread the word that it is for sale, and that it will be closed

until someone buys it. We realize that this is not good for the

business but it is our only option. I hope that by getting the word

out to the largest possible audience, we will be able to find a

buyer, and it can open for this year's season.

Dale and I are going back for a quick trip to button things up, get

it listed, and turn off some utilities that we won't need such as

phone and cable.

Thank you, everyone, for all the support you've given our business

while it's been in our hands. Time to bass the baton...

Sincerely,

Hilda Bakke

Evening folks! With tomorrow being March 1st and a Monday to boot,

that means Monday night at 8pm EST will be the March edition of

American Road "Chat Night" (Still looking for a catchy road-themed

name for Chat Night!). We don't have any special guests lined up, so

it'll be an open forum.

We had a good turnout in February on short notice, and Thomas Repp

filled us in on some interesting road news and other interesting

tidbits from the bowels of the American Road World Headquarters.

The link for the main page is:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AMERICAN_ROAD/

From there, click on the "Chat" link on the menu on the left, and

that should put you in the room. Be there or be a four cornered

object with equal sides!

Thanks for the support everyone! I was also able to get an article

I just bought, on ebay, 4 AAA Tour Guides. There are Northeastern

and Southeastern 1938, a 1936 book for the Northeast and a 1939

edition for the Southeast. It seems that the Southeast editions are

the most difficult to find, for some reason, while Northeast editons

are all over the place.

In any event since I have both 1937 and 1941 Northeast editions I

may, in due course, put one or both the Northeast guides up for sale.

Will let this group know for first dibs. I really don't want to go

thru ebay.

I found these on www.ebay.ca, the Canadian ebay. There seems to be

a lot of stuff there then on ebay.com - and many of the sellers, like

the one I got these books from, are here in the U S so resolves

currency and shipping problems.

Hello all- I just found this group, and would love to get some feedback on a

trip I have

coming up. In April I will be traveling from Morgantown, WV to Santa Fe NM. I

will be

leaving WV on 4/18, and I don't have to be in Santa Fe NM until 5/14. ( For the

North

American Travel Journalists Association convention www.natja.org) I will be

traveling in a

minivan that is set up for camping, so I have the option of camping, as well as

staying at

hotels. I was thinking of taking Hwy 50, but I'm open to suggestions. Also,

I'm a

professional photographer with an interest in old signs, cool motels, etc. I

would like to

get feedback as to suggested routes, or things to see. Also, after my

convention, I will be

traveling around the southwest, and up the west coast, to WA. I will be out

that way for

Memorial Day, and I'm wondering if there are any events that I should try to

attend.

If you want to see some of my photography, you can check out my website at

www.maryschilpp.com Also, I put together

a website from the cross country trip I did in 2000. That can be viewed at

Thanks very much, I look forward to hearing from you. - Mary

One way would be to follow U S 50 west to Jeff City,

MO, then southwest on U S 54 to Tucumcari - then I-40

west to U S 84 east of Albuquerque which will take you

to I-25 and then west on I-25 to Santa Fe - which,

admittedly is a little bit of a detour.

Or you could take 50 west into Illinois, then take

51 south to Memphis and pickup either 64 (we'll get

back to that one in a moment) or 70, which will take

you into Little Rock. You can follow 70 all the way

into New Mexico to Clovis, then 60 west to Encino and

285 northwest into Santa Fe. 64, on the other hand

crosses Arkansas and goes all the way to Tres Piedras

then 285 south to Santa Fe thru San Juan.

I'm sure others will come up with other routes, and

things to see and do along the way.

Happy Traveling.

I'd hit the National Road in Washington PA, follow

that through to St. Louis, and then follow Rt 66 to

Santa Fe (early 1920s alignment went to Santa Fe) if

you haven't done most of those routes already.

Earlier this winter, a flash flood devastated most of the roads in Death Valley

National Park. Two campers were killed. Since then, another 6 inches of rain

has fallen and what is normally the barren, dry desert is now bursting out in

wildflowers surrounding a large lake.

All roads except one have been rebuilt or repaired. Highway 190 from Furnace

Creek east to Death Valley Junction remains closed.

Since much of Death Valley is near or below sea level, water does not drain

well. The 120+ degrees Farenheit temperatures will quickly evaporate this water

by July4th.

I have posted some pictures of the flowers and lake at www.lasvegasregion.com

Told y'all I had more goodies in store! I finally stayed up

virtually 24 hours one evening to finally put some trip photos from

last summer on the web. Please check out my new Texas 80 web

additions from West Central & Central Texas here:

http://bygonebyways.com/texas_80.htm

Just click on one of the pony express riders to begin exploring

Texas! I realize the pages are large and slow loading, but they're

just chock full of pics and I certainly think their worthwhile. Hope

you enjoy them.

Cheers and hope to see ya on the road!

Well Jeff, thanks for making me two hours late for dinner -- I got your post via

email as I was about to leave work, and I have been sitting here the past 90

minutes clicking through your pages like a starved dog -- fantastic!!

I have to say that you photographs are absolutely incredible. The color depth,

clarity, sharpness, setup and framing are just remarkable. What camera / lens

do you use to get such great shots?

I am going to print out all of the west Texas pages and directions, and go

through my "Road Of Texas" Atlas, page by page and highlight every exit and

turn.

We are planning another trip from Dallas to Lubbock and back next month to visit

my son at Texas Tech, but I will have my wife and daughter with me and so I'm

afraid I might be left abandoned on the side of the road if I subject them to

such torturous agony as exploring, stopping and photographing every 10 minutes

--- I may have to reserve my Highway 80 excursion for a solo trip...

You've really inspired me to get out my photograhs from our many trips west of

Dallas to Lubbock, Midland and Odessa the past year and get them posted. I

have had an opportunity to get some great shots of courthouses, old gas stations

and a few ghosttowns. My next goal is to see Thurber...

Keep up the great work Jeff!

Not a problem, Denny! I just went to your main URL and maneuvered

your website from there. Great shots, I might add!

I highly doubt it...Johnnie is from West Virginia (ironically enough,

Clarksdale, W.VA)...Robert is from Mississippi. Johnnie started out after

the war in Chicago with Muddy Waters and Little Milton before moving to St.

Louis, where he worked first with Albert King before starting up his own

group and hooking up with Chuck Berry...Tsingtao Kip

I'm back home for a brief intermission before hitting the road again for the

eastern half of my Route 66 guidebook research.

(I hope the group gets THIS message, as I had to change internet providers right

after I got back, and its caused problems with yahoo!..My new address is:

jerrymc66 @ earthlink.net (with no spaces, of course) I keep jumping thru

the hoops..maybe this time it will work!!!!!!!!!

What a trip so far...15 days on the road, over 30 hours of tapes to transcribe,

and @ 45 rolls of film (and thats just OKC to Santa Monica and back!)

Hi lights: Visiting with Munoz at the San Bernardino Wigwams for @ an hour!

(What a great job they have done with the Motel..I highly recommend staying

there.

I also visited with Pat Oneil at Milepost 176, Park AZ...he is a storehouse of

history, and has a lot to say about how the little guy on 66 has to fight

against the government..local, state and federal.

Thats one thread along my trip...small town entrepreneurs trying to make their

mark along 66, using what comes to hand to build a Route 66 experience..like the

Route 66 Diner in Sanders, AZ (just south of the Dirt 66 alignment) who moved an

old Valentine Diner out to their property, and combined it with an old trailer

house, etc, to make a funky retro eating place.

I had the mix of good and bad luck...I missed seeing the Museum in Winslow, but

while I was there, a sports car rallye stopped at the La Posada, so I hopefully

got some good shots, and got to tour the rooms, too...what a fantastic place.

Other great places:(most suggested by the Federation's Dining and Lodging Guide)

I stayed at Fenders River Road Resort in Needles on my way back, and it was

super..quiet, clean and right on the river. (If they're full, the Super 8 was

great, too..I think it was the only chain I stayed in on the trip).

Barstow's Route 66 Motel was also a neat stop..its more rustic and spartan, but

the owners love 66, and the yard is full of old cars (2 studebakers, and old

cadillac, a metropolitan with Howdy Doody behind the wheel. etc) It was clean

and quiet, and inexpensive.

I was a bit disappointed in the Route 66 Inn in Williams...a fresh coat of paint

on the grimy walls in my room would have made a big difference .

Also, the Road Runner's Motel in Gallup was OK..it just wasn't great.

The Monterrey Non Smokers Motel in Albuquerque was great, as usual...so was the

Blue Swallow in Tucumcari (two of my favorite places to stay in NM)

In Shamrock, I had a good nites sleep at the Blarney Motel, and my last night on

the road was at the Trade Winds in Clinton (always a great place).

Whoops..almhe El Rey Inn in Santa Fe... butilt in @ 1936, and I stayed in one of

the original rooms for @ $70...what a fantastic place...safe and quiet..great

architecture and public spaces.

I visited the Museums in Victorville, Barstow (not long enuff there!) Gallup,

McLean TX, Elk City and Clinton..all are doing wonderful work.

A bad thing: The totally unnecessary asphalt they slathered over the formerly

beautiful concrete road between Parks AZ and the Pitman Valley Rd exit...only a

brief section at the top of the hill is left.

More Good things: Visiting with Fran at the Midpoint Cafe in Adrian (make sure

this place is on your itenerary, even if you have to pencil it in to your

guidebook!)

Driving the Red Gap ranch Road.

Driving to the old bridge west of Romeroville.

Visiting with the owner of an evolving Gas Station Museum in Williams (and

eating at Twisters) (and the Uranium Cafe..and a shake at the Bagdad Cafe)

Taking one morning off, so I could drive from Victorville to Palmdale, to visit

the outdoor display of an SR-71 and A-12....former airforce and CIA spyplanes

that flew faster than Mach 3...the volunteer even gave me a piece of a wrecked

SR-71..a crumpled handfull of titanium that once lew over mach 3 at 85,000

feet)..this has nothing to do with Route 66..its just another interest of mine!

There's so much more to relate of this trip, and I'm sure my transcribing will

jog more...I'll also be writing this up in the Federation news.

Now, I just have to finish the east portion of 66, transcribe my notes, draw the

maps, write the text, do the artwork......

I negelected to mention those kind folk who lodged me during my

guidebook-research trip out west.

Of course, David and Mary Lou Knudson of the Federation (the guidebook's

publishers, fer sher) put me up (up with me?) for an evening..that road to Lake

Arrowhead is a real doozie for us flatlanders! I saw how close the fire damage

came (real close).

Then, when I got out to Pasadena, Scott and Julie played host for the night (I

slept on a Murphy bed..I wonder where Murphy slept that night?)

The next day, Scott and I spent the morning driving (and hiking!) the old

alignments between Pasadena and LA...hiking? Yep, we found the access to the

pedestrian walkways along the Arroyo Seco Parkway, and closely examined the

tunnel portals, bridges, etc! I'm sure Scott will be writing about some of the

new discoveries he made on this trip.

All in all, I had a great time in CA, and look forward to clueing in others

about all the goodness along 66 there.

Folks I want to introduce you to a artist that will be joining us in June at

the Albuquerque event. His name is Bolton Smith his web site is

www.rboltonsmith.co

He is an American Impressionist and he has a series of Route 66 artwork.

There is one for each of the eight states so far in his collection. He lives

in South Carolina with his wife and they have an Art Gallery. They want to

become even more involved with Route 66 and are looking forward to joining

the Route 66 Community.

Please check out his web site and start adding his work to your collection.

He would like to talk with anyone that wants to stock and sell his work as

well.

Thanks
