Guest Brian Butko
?A few less margaritas over the course of a trip....? Perhaps that?s what travelers are doing, and why restaurants are struggling. If you take a vehicle that gets 20 MPG (and most get better than that) on a 3000 mile trip then you'll use 150 gallons of gas. At $1.50 a gallon that's $225; at $2.00 a gallon that's $300. When you consider what we all usually end up spending on a 3000 mile trip an additional $75 isn't all that much. A few less margaritas over the course of a trip would make the difference. Guest Charlie and Jan
I am Jan from Iowa. I was on the group before. I just got a new address and got online again. How is everyone? Where is everyone traveling to? Some are probably getting ready to go south for the winter months. It is chilly here this morning. 57 degrees but sunny. We have those awful beetle bugs again. The farmers are busy with field work. Have a good day. Jan from Iowa
Guest Alex Burr
Hey Mike, Go soak your head in your catsup bottle - Bo Sox deserve to win!!! LOL ROF LLAM After years of niggardly (is it politically correct to use that word??) financing toward good ball players a change of management, and as I recall ownership, resulted in people in charge that aren't afraid go spend some money on players that can get the job done. And they did it. Let us have something to be proud of, even those of us who aren't really baseball (or football) fans (let's hear it for stock car racing - YEA LOL), if only for a fleeting moment. Sox just happened to be more motivated this year - yeah, 8 wins in a row gets you the brass ring. PS - To anybody who thinks this post isn't road realted, Boston IS on U S route #1. Fitting seeing as how the Patriots are #1 and now the Sox are #1. LOL Y'all have a great day. Guest Russell S. Rein
If margaritas were $2.00 a gallon hopefully people wouldn't be driving too much. From the Citizen Tribune, Morristown?, TN - 10/28/04 Grant to fund a study of 25E Ray Snader, Tribune Correspondent U.S. Congressman Bill Jenkins (R-TN) announced Wednesday initial funding for improvements to U.S. Highway 25E has been approved. Jenkins said the U.S. Department of Transportation has approved the use of $120,000 for the development of a corridor management plan for the U.S. 25E corridor stretching from the Kentucky state line at Cumberland Gap to the intersection of U.S.25/70 in Newport. The U.S. 25E Byway Committee, a group seeking to have 25E become a National Scenic Byway, will develop a plan to identify the intrinsic qualities of the corridor and "how they can be developed, promoted and protected for the enjoyment of the traveling public, and to increase tourism related travel in the region," Jenkins said. According to the congressman, corridor management plans are the central tool used by byway leaders to organize activities, investments and planning goals for the communities and partners supporting the byway. Highway 25E is part of the Dixie Highway, the first federal road to make a north-south connection in the United States. A portion of the highway also follows the historic Daniel Boone Wilderness Trail through Cumberland Gap. ypsi-slim On Thu, 28 Oct 2004 11:32:28 -0400 "Denny Gibson" <denny@dennygibson.com> writes: Of course, if you could get margaritas for $2.00 a gallon, it would be a different story. Guest Rudyard Welborn
This Cardinal fan is certainly tipping his hat to the Red Sox for their victory in the world series...they played like a team that deserved to win the series, especially in the last 3 games when Schilling, Martinez and Lowe pitched gems...the Cardinals built a great team, and had for us in St. Louis a magical season, and I toast them for that; alas, while the Red Sox played like contendas, the Cardinals went into a slump that they could not crawl out of...being the son of a Cardinal Fan that held the Cardinals in his heart for 80 years, and transferred that love to his son, it was hard to watch and for this Cardinals fan, saying the result was "disappointing" is putting it mildly...so I toast the Red Sox, but I can't say that I don't choke my Stag down just a little, thinking about what might have been...congrats, Red Sox fan; maybe we'll see ya next October...Tsingtao, Kip ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mike Gassmann" <mike@catsupbottle.com> To: <AMERICAN_ROAD@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Thursday, October 28, 2004 11:53 AM Subject: Re: [AMERICAN_ROAD] OT - Boston vs St. Louis > > Hiya Alex! > > And yes, the Cards will go down in history as the team that allowed the > curse to be broken! Guest Pat B.
Hi all....hope you're all doing some dandy fall foliage touring. We had a neat weekend, which started off Saturday night with a trip to Sharpsville, IN to the "Town of Summer Place" (http://asummerplace.org) where Jennifer & I tied the proverbial knot in 2002 (http://roadtripmemories.com/trips/wedding.htm) . A makeshift drive-in movie theater was set up and a viewing of "Back to the Future" was shown for a crowd of 25 or so vehicles and their occupants. The $13 admission also included a cheeseburger, fries, cherry Coke, and banana split (The same eats we had for our wedding reception!), from "Angel's Diner" the amazing chrome diner on site. All proceeds go to an adoption foundation. It was a bit chilly (47 when we left), but the setting was really neat. If you ever get a chance to visit Summer Place, by all means take advantage of the opportunity! Today we cruised out to western Indiana to the Parke County Covered Bridge Festival (http://www.coveredbridges.com/). This 10 day event draws upwards of 2 million visitors from all over the country. The BBQ sammich & persimmon pudding went down quite well. :-) Hope you all have a safe fall season & be sure to post your links and photos of your adventures on our site: http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/AMERICAN_ROAD/ Pat Bremer Moderator American Road Yahoo Group

Guest Alex Burr
"The Ballad of Thunder Road had two release dates - originally released on April 23, 1958 (the movie also released in 1958) and re-released on May 2, 1967. The Thunder Road movie is available on DVD thru Amazon.com (of course I have a copy!!! LOL) Your routing is probably pretty close - whoever wrote the song must have been pretty familiar with the Harlan County/Knoxville area for sure. However, there are (or were) a lot of roads down there that were used that didn't have numbers on them. Gravel for the most part, and really not conducive to driving 80 or 90 unless you wanted to kill yourself in a hurry. Many times these roads were used as "escape" routes. A tripper with a fed on his back bumper might jog off onto one of those old gravel roads - the amount of dust thrown up by his car would cause the Fed to back off since he couldn't see where he was going - especially at night. The road over Cumberland Gap wasn't all that bad back then. No worse, I'd say (from memory) than a lot of other roads in the area. I think they closed it and built a tunnel more for "convienence" of travelers, IMHO. This was in Washington DC. I think there are regional differences in the popularity of songs, and timing differences as well. I can look at a "Top 100 List for 19xx" and realize that the dates are off by a few months from when it played on Washington stations. But four years is a bit much. As for 25E over the Gap, it had acquired a fearsome reputation by the time the tunnel was started. You can still walk the old alignment. I understand the long term plans are to remove the pavement and make it look like the Wilderness Road of Daniel Boone's time. Of course with the National Park Service being chronically underfunded, that may be a while. BTW, I sold a postcard of Cudjo's Cave for $30.00 on Ebay. Guest John Wesson
You can read a one-sided story about it but not any comments dis-agreeing. Roy's in Amboy, Ca.--a REAL mid-dessert Rt. 66 legend has closed for good and is up for sale. Any hope of forcing it to stay open? My Vette club has used it as a staging point for our January 'River Run' for years, and it was a 'must stop' when we traveled rt.66. A little 'Trivia' for the history buffs. Roy, the original owner, first scraped out a runway that he used to get to town. When the Gov. placed a light tower to close to the departure end, the FAA wanted him to close it. Instead, he re-classified it a private field, open to anyone who could safely use it. His days, for several of his latter years, were spent sitting by his old hanger door, watching the cars and trucks go by and welcomed anyone--driver or pilot--who would take the time to sit and visit. Unfortunately, most of his stories died with him--a True treasure lost--he is who I went to wanting information about landing at Ludlow, another desert landmark. His answer was--'drag the main street low and slow to wake up the dogs and make sure the cops weren't there' and then land on west main and taxi back for coffee. Just coffee--if you stayed any longer, unwanted visitors had time to get there. His stories used to break up the long trip across the hot desert and both he and his gas station-restaurant, and later motel will be fondly remembered. Guest John Wesson
Another 'little useless tidbit of worthless information'==at the end of that 'infamous road' off interstate 15, called ZZYZX, is a cave in the mountain. There, the University of Calif. is doing research on a fish, native to this land-locked cave in the middle of the desert, that has no eyes. There is no way for a fish to get in the cave in the lake inside, nor to live there so many thousands of years that evolution caused its eyes to go away. But yet, here it lives, in total darkness, so it needs no eyes. Who said mother nature isn't great. john

Guest Larry Kinsey
Kip, I lived in New Richmond for about 18 months and I can remember when the high for the day was minus 22. And I loved camping in the area of Spooner and Shell Lake in the summer. The last time I was in that area was in '74. Guest Denny Gibson
My goof on the clowns. I've been in Wisconsin a total of three times: Madison, Eau Claire, & Baraboo. The Ringlings are from Baraboo and there is a museum there ( http://www.circusworldmuseum.com/ ). No doubt I confused Eau Claire with Baraboo and "clown college" with "circus museum". That's my story and I'm sticking to it. BTW, thank you Google. --Denny -----Original Message----- From: Rudyard Welborn [mailto:r.Welborn@worldnet.ATT.net] Sent: Tuesday, December 28, 2004 7:59 AM To: AMERICAN_ROAD@yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [AMERICAN_ROAD] Takin Off to Da Nort Country! Guest rwarn17588
I guess you're out of the loop. About six months ago, Albert Okura of the Juan Pollo restaurants in California bought the entire town of Amboy. Okura has been slowly but steadily fixing up Roy's and probably will have at least part of it open by next year. Here's a story with details: http://www.mohavedailynews.com/articles/20...ocal/local5.txt Ron Warnick Tulsa, OK www.route66news.org --- In AMERICAN_ROAD@yahoogroups.com, "John Wesson" <ipilot66@y...> wrote: > > You can read a one-sided story about it but not any comments > dis-agreeing. Been down I-40 4 times in last 5 weeks, but no time to go through Amboy. Thanks for the update. It is a great 'one-day destination' and the little town of Essex is nearby for some good 'old time stories'. Unfortunately, 66 is a pretty good ways off 1-40 in that area, the road is getting pretty rough and a little daunting for the average traveler. By the way, I was thru your state just recently and was really saddened by the fires. That Sunday night we were sent north around some of the fires, even shut down the I-40 because of a tanker fire. It really looked like the world was burning. It was spread over an area larger than even our Calif. brush fires. I read of one area that I had passed thru that lost 22 homes, not counting the 'outbuildings.' > I guess you're out of the loop. > > About six months ago, Albert Okura of the Juan Pollo restaurants in > California bought the entire town of Amboy. Guest adamghost@aol.com
<<You can read a one-sided story about it but not any comments dis-agreeing. Roy's in Amboy, Ca.--a REAL mid-dessert Rt. 66 legend has closed for good and is up for sale. Any hope of forcing it to stay open?>> This is incorrect. Roy's and the entire town of Amboy has been bought by the owner of the Juan Pollo restaurant chain and is being refurbished. I can verify this first hand; I stopped in at Roy's two weeks ago and spent about a half hour with the gentleman doing the restoration (I blogged about it as part of the National Old Trails "desert blogging" posted at www.myspace.com/adamghost )
Guest big_ugly_mich@yahoo.com
There's a clown camp in La Crosse, which is on the coast of the Mississippi, too. It's south of Eau Claire, but about 80 miles south. If you're bound that way, it's worth checking out. I'd go just because I like clowns and circuses, but it's your trip so you decide. For the benefit of anyone else who may be reading this and wanting to check out the clown camp, http://www.uwlax.edu/clowncamp/ It's actually part of the University of Wisconsin system, but not an accredited clown college. My wife enjoyed it, and makes money doing parties for kids (of all ages, naturally). Just as an aside, Hank Aaron ended his pro baseball career in Milwaukee as a DH with Milwaukee's Brewers. He hit his first and last big league homers in County Stadium, and for different leagues, too. --- In AMERICAN_ROAD@yahoogroups.com, "Rudyard Welborn" <r.Welborn@w...> wrote: > Very glad to be back in the land of -- if nothing else -- warmer climate (it > was minus 20 on Christmas Eve in Spooner!)
