Guest Rudyard Welborn
Just to thorw my two cents in: the 1955 Rand McNally Atlas has U.S. 63 following 61 into Memphis but it looks like it ends right after crossing the river. That did not last; I recall going to Memphis with my parents starting in the late 60's and by that time 63 ended at the intersection with I-55. The extension into Louisiana is a relatively new concoction; it comes extremely close to Memphis but appears to veers west at W. Memphis before its trek south. A fairly old map of Ark that I have has 61 following the path of what is now SR77 through Jericho, Marion and into W. Memphis; in light of the fact that 77 starts right where 61 enters onto I-55, that makes sense. You need to continue your 61 trek into Mississippi; it will take you to Clarksdale and through the land of the Delta Blues...when in Memphi remember 1) ham is country cured; 2) cornbread is not sweet, and 3) tea is...Tsingtao, Kip ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bob Reynolds" <roustabout@starband.net> To: <AMERICAN_ROAD@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Saturday, January 17, 2004 5:36 PM Subject: [AMERICAN_ROAD] Re: U S 63, 70 co-alignment > --- In AMERICAN_ROAD@yahoogroups.com, "Alex Burr" <hester_nec@y...> > wrote: > > I was posting some of the pictures I took of my recent road trip > > across U S 64 and U S 70 and realized one of them is a bit flaky, > to > > say the least. Guest brownwho63
My 1950 Rand McNally shows U.S. 63 angling southeast from the Mammoth Spring entry point to West Memphis where it intersects with U.S. 70/79. At that point, 63 disappeared. U.S. highways 51, 61, 64, 72, and 78 were the other U.S. highways entering and leaving Memphis. My 1943 State Farm Atlas shows the same routing. A 1980 Rand McNally shows 63 intersecting with I-55 in the Gilmore/Turrell area north of Memphis and then disappearing. If Kip, southern Missouri good 'ole boy and blue highway traveler of legend, sez I-55 carried no 63 markers, it must be so....Bliss --- In AMERICAN_ROAD@yahoogroups.com, "Rudyard Welborn" <r.Welborn@w...> wrote: > I looked at a newer atlas and found, suprising to me, that 63 goes on at > least to w. Guest Alex Burr
Ok, the web site U S Highways (http://www.us-highways.com/) gives the following info on the Tennessee highways (http://www.us-highways.com/tn-us.htm#US%2063) page: (US 63) From: AR state line at Memphis To: Memphis Length in TN: 1 mi Dates Signed in TN: 1935 - 1999 Bannered Routes: none known History in TN: 1935 extended from AR to Memphis; 1999: decommissioned Note that it extended 1 mile into Memphis - would have to be the downtown area. Why?? Who knows at this late date - as my daughter says "It's an Arky thing!!" She should know - she's married to one!! (She says the same thing about the current zig-zag course across Arkansas today.) LOL Everybody have a great day. Happy traveling. Guest brownwho63
Just joined the group this morning after receiving Kip's email regarding same and a couple of forwards regarding U.S. 40. Our first love, of course, is the Mother Road (born where the road begins, lived in Dwight, now the Gateway -- all on '66) but we love old concrete two laners of any variety. We're fortunate to have some other great highways run through here; namely, U.S. 40, U.S. 50, U.S. 61, and U.S 67. We've cruised all of them at one time or another and like '66, they're all wonderful time travel escapes. We recently became very interested in U.S. 40 and have found numerous similarities to Route 66. The National Historic Road alignment (old, old 40) is eye poppin' through all of the small towns and countrysides and fascinating enough to command that our annual Sweetheart Cruise with a few friends be channeled away from '66 this year to go from St. Louis to Marshall, IL. We'll be cruisin' through the past in places like Collinsville, Troy, Pocahontas, St. Elmo, Altamont, Vandalia, Effingham, Casey, Martinsville, Teutopolis, Greenup, Marshall, etc. I'm getting a bad case of road fever just writing this! Navigator and I attended a Fever/Lynx game in Indy last summer and made the round trip on '40. Like Illinois, the Hoosier state has fantastic alignments that include old bridges, a drive-in theater, and numerous other sites for the road warrior. What I would really like to have is turn-by-turn directions and photo ops for this particular old road. I created them for personal travel between here and Marshall to be used by our cruise group and am wondering whether or not such directions exist for '40 alignments elsewhere. Anybody know? Guest Jennifer
One of our free, local entertainment papers has a covery story this week about "big advertising", and the article is "Giant Indiana". The muffler man on the cover caught my eye as I was walking to work in one of those plastic newspaper holders downtown. The article is about a local women's quest for all kinds of big advertising icons - muffler men, giant chickens, etc. http://www.nuvo.net/archive/2005/01/05/indiana_giants.html Her website is here: http://commonplacebook.com/photos/big_things/ Jennifer
Guest jenniferrt66
Greetings everyone! We have made a slight change to our group's rules and membership policy, which will not affect most current, active members of the group. Occasionally (luckily not too often), we get messages from "hit and run" spammers who join and spam us. To help prevent this, effectively immediately, all new memberships will be approved by us. At that time, new members will be moderated for a short period until a history of appropriate posting is established, after which the member will be unmoderated. Hopefully, this will prevent spam and other inappropriate posts from reaching the group. This rule in no way intended to make anyone feel unwelcome or scared off from posting. We feel that anyone with a genuine interest in our group will certainly post appropriately and there won't be a problem approving posts. In other words, we don't intend to edit and nitpick new member's posts for content as long as they're relevant and appropriate. Rather, we're only trying to eliminate spam, or in the case of this morning's post, just weird, irrelevant posts. When that has happened, we will remove the post from the website and remove and ban that member. However, that doesn't prevent spam from reaching those of you whose settings receive e-mail, as we can only take care of it after it happens. We hope that by moderating all new members' posts, we will get to know them and will then change that members' status to unmoderated. We appreciate your understanding…we know it's very frustrating to have spam and other strange messages reaching our group and we want to do what we can to eliminate that from happening. Pat and Jennifer Bremer AR List Hosts SPEED LIMITS Because personal views often differ, please familiarize yourself with our SPEED LIMITS, which set boundaries and explain the atmosphere we hope to maintain. -New members will be approved and moderated for a short time until a history of appropriate posts is established. We welcome new members; unfortunately, we've started this policy to protect the group and prevent spam. -NO FLAMING! Flaming is any derogatory or insulting remark directed at another list member. This doesn't necessarily include comments critical of persons outside the list, however, such as actions by those who would destroy roadside landmarks. Remember, the list isn't a battleground for personal arguments. Acts of flaming will generate a reminder. Continued infractions will result in banishment. -Keep your posts on topic. Off-topic posts should be sparing and labeled OFF-TOPIC. -No profanity & off-color jokes. -Kindly keep posts road-related and aimed at the group in general rather than one person. Private email should be used for one-on-one chat. -Computers have made us lazy but we ask that you please make a real effort to only include parts of a prior message pertinent to your response. Simply hitting "reply" wastes space and forces everyone to scroll through threads that may get long. Pat and Jennifer Bremer AR List Hosts >> so you changed the policy because of the strange message about extra-terrestrials, I found it to be the most interesting thing I have seen here in a long time. much more interesting than going over the old road atlases to try and guess which highway went where. much more interesting than a restaurant review, what somebody had for breakfast. the come-ons for online dating and other scams did not warrant such a response, maybe you just got fed up. seems to me like traveling throughout the galaxies would be the ultimate 'road trip' but you know me, I happen to like freeways so what do I know. the other scams that show up here occasionally do not bother me much, they are annoying but trivial. So you think you have a problem, like a friend of mine said if you want to see somebody who has a problem go to Mexico, what you have is fine tuning. maybe what our hosts found annoying was how the message went on and on and did not seem to go anywhere It was not offensive as far as I can tell, it just wasted our valuable time. I think the new policy is an overreaction to weirdness and one more thing, just ask yourself 'what if?' as in what if it were true. and while I am on a rant, I concluded at an early age, at least in single digits, that road maps lie and cannot be trusted. All of your talk of old road atlases is lost on me, you are just shouting in the wind. like in all the detective stories, there is no substitute for a man on the ground or in a library. If you want to find out where that road went go to the library and look it up. what I mean about road maps lie is how the scale is too great and there is not enough detail, they only show you the general trend. If you look at the 15 minute series maps of the USGS you can get probably as much information as you need, the road atlases are just too gross. Actually I am wrong (again) you can locate alignments such as in Memphis on the inset city maps, just remember that like many other products maps are often obsolete by the time they are produced. I can remember where I was when I became disillusioned with maps, we were driving back from a day at Mt. Rainier and going through the Nisqually canyon below Elbe, the road is very twisty and I looked at the gas station map to see where we were and the map showed the road as parallel to the river which was a big simplification. You can go to your old road atlas and look it up, my MCMLXXXVI AAA atlas shows it as WA 7 between Alder and La Grande. the copyright MCMLXXXVI is for the 1987 edition, already obsolete. seems to me like banning the alien messages is not very friendly, since we are all adults here maybe be can handle a little weirdness not and then. I get more offended by what comes over the TV have a nice day, Dave PS let's have more 'strange messages'

Guest roadmaven@aol.com
Kent, Welcome to the group! 40 through Illinois will be a great drive for you. In eastern Illinois, there are many fragmented segments of original National Road along the shoulders of current 40, including some vintage brick sections. The Illinois National Road Association has done some remarkable things in recent years and has really stepped up their involvement: <A HREF="http://www.nationalroad.org/">National Road Association</A> . As for a turn by turn guidebook, I'm not aware of anything that specific, but I'd highly recommend Karl Raitz' "A Guide to The National Road", which is a nearly 400 page hard cover that gives a view of the National Road as it is today. It's available at most online book stores, or directly through Johns Hopkins University Press: http://www.press.jhu.edu/press/books/titles/s96/s96rgu2.htm It covers the entire road from Maryland to Illinois. The next time you're planning on cruising 40 through Indiana, we'll get Randy & Melody May and have a mini motor tour. Guest Alex Burr
Dave, After reading your post I find myself trying to figure out what you are doing over here. Obviously you have no interest in our egroup, or in the subject of our egroup!!! Perhaps you need to form your own egroup dedicated to ET's and freeways and other things of interest to you. Speaking for myself I enjoy most of what I find on here - if something is posted I don't care to read or am not interested in, I simply delete it and move on to the next item of discussion. Most of us on these road egroups are here because we have a definite interest in the old ways of traveling. For example, the other day I found an old motel outside Brinkley, AR, that featured a garage between each unit - that is interesting to me, and perhaps others, so I wrote about it and posted pictures of it on the photo page. I tend to agree with the screening policy that has been implemented - had I such a policy on my web site I might not have had to go in and ban 3 new memebers and delete the pornography posts they put in the msg group. If you wish to consider me a prude for not wanting that material on my website, that is your priviledge - but know that I spent 22 years in the military. I've seen it all and beleive me I'm no prude. Things have their place - and a road group or automobile web site is not the place for it. Guest Alex Burr
I've driven 40 thru most of Ohio and thru Indiana to Indianapolis. It's a fun drive with a lot of by-passed old alignments to seek out. Sure beats the heck out of beating your brains out on the interstate. I even had a nice chat with a local cop about Indiana's mandatory seat belt law - being from Maine what did I know!!! LOL However, he was feeling benevolent that day and let me go on my way with only an admonishment. Strange thing is I usually wear a seat belt (you get into the habit, even 40 years later, after driving a stock car) but I was in the middle of a town and stopping every block or so to take pictures of some great old buildings and other things. So I didn't have it on. Now I can't even remember the town, but it seems to me they had some sort of street thing going in the middle of downtown - this was last Sept. Still a great way to go. One of these trips we WILL take 40 from Cumberland, MD, and fill in the gaps. OTOH, for me a 'short trip on 41' is a drive on a busy 6 lane urban freeway. BTW, US 141 runs from the Green Bay, WI area (actually Bellevue, WI) northward to US 41 a bit south of L'Anse, MI, although it originally went as far south as Milwaukee via Manitowoc and Sheboygan, WI. Eastern Wisconsin is laced with fun-to-explore 'old' roadways of both routes, too. d -- ___________________________________________ ____ _______________ Regards, | | ____ | | | | | Michael G. Guest Bakerhab@aol.com
I forwarded Bliss' message about the Missouri emissions bill to Conrad Wong at SEMA (Specialty Equipment Marketing Assn.). As SEMA is interested in all things automotive, and I was able to put our DC delegation in touch with Conrad prior to their trip. Here is a report from Conrad on their meeting yesterday. You can join the SEMA Action Network at http://www.semaactionnetwork.com/ Helen A. Baker Secretary California Route 66 Preservation Foundation 5004 Enfield Avenue Encino, California 91316 818-705-3930 bakerhab@aol.com www.cart66pf.org Subj: DC Trip Update & Missouri Emissions Date: 2/19/2004 9:04:17 AM Pacific Standard Time From: ConradW@sema.org To: Bakerhab@aol.com Hi, Helen! Thanks so much for your note on the latest doings with the Missouri emissions-testing bill. I have forwarded it onto Steve McDonald of my office. So you know, yesterday, Wednesday, February 18, I had the pleasure of having a lunch meeting with Jim Conkle of the Route 66 Preservation Foundation and Steve Henthorn of the San Bernardino Convention and Visitors Bureau, and three of their colleagues. They were here in Washington, D.C., meeting with their elected U.S. representatives as well as officials from various U.S. Government agencies that might be able to financially assist the foundation in its efforts to maintain the culture of Route 66 and the many buildings that line the route. In the D.C. office of SEMA, we only track federal and state legislation and issues that affect our members and the automotive and truck hobby. Still, I gave him suggestions on other places and individuals with whom they might wish to visit, to see if they might funds available. The meeting was useful in allowing us to get to know each other, and get a better sense of what Jim and his organization want to achieve. The folks in his group were, to a person, delightful. Hope this message finds you well. My best to your other half. Conrad
Guest Jim Teresco
I made a few trips on US 550 in the last year and a half or so, mostly to get to southeastern Utah and southern Colorado from Albuquerque. It's a very scenic ride, and the road is good quality. I never travelled it before it was 4-laned. When were those pictures on the linked page taken? I didn't see any NM 44 markers on the road in my trips from late 2003 up to last month. A few of my pages linked from http://www.teresco.org/pics/ have pictures from the rides: http://www.teresco.org/pics/fourcorners-20...7/27/us550.html http://www.teresco.org/pics/wolfcreek-20040207-08/us550.html http://www.teresco.org/pics/co-nm-20050119...19/allpics.html -- Jim Teresco - terescoj@teresco.org http://www.teresco.org
Guest brownwho63
Yes, Buford was from Crump, TN. I worked in Selmer, TN periodically for over 20 years and spent some time at a joint south of town called Katherine's Club. This was one of Buford's hangouts before (and after) he became the Selmer sheriff and the patrons there (solid citizens all -- grin) painted an entirely different picture of him from what was portrayed in the Walking Tall movies. They said he was a bully and a thug and lived longer than anyone thought he would. A good friend from work went to high school with Buford and he also held that same opinion. Buford was, he said, just a big bully who finally got what he kept asking for. Didn't know the man personally but I'm inclined to believe the stories....Bliss --- In AMERICAN_ROAD@yahoogroups.com, "Rudyard Welborn" <r.Welborn@w...> wrote: > 64 going towards Chattanooga also takes you through Crump, TN which is, I > believe, where Buford Pusser of Walking Tall fame resided> > > > > > > ______________________________________________________________________ __ > > > > > ______________________________________________________________________ __ > > > > > > > > ______________________________________________________________________ __ > > > > > ______________________________________________________________________ __ > > > > > > Message: 2 > > > Date: Mon, 16 Feb 2004 07:46:45 -0800 (PST) > > > From: Bob Worley > > > Subject: Re: Re: RE: Road Report > > > > > > JerryMc, > > > > > > Since I am about an hour from Corcicana and my dad, > > > uncles and cousins have > > > lots of land in Navarro county, I would be very > > > interested in seeing what you > > > have to show...! > > > > > > Bob Worley > > > > > > --- jerrymc66 wrote: > > > > > > > > Lulu, > > > > > > > > As I said, I HAVE been photographing and > > > documenting these old slab > > > > roads...for years! Guest brownwho63
Missouri Roadies, Please phone MO House Speaker Katherine Hanaway's office in Jefferson City at (573) 751-8510 to request she allow Rep. Harold Selby's bill for elimination of emission testing to reach the floor for voting. She, I suspect, is holding up the vote because she has not yet decided which is the safer side for her and her political future. The lady I spoke with today in her office said they were interested in gathering opinions on the subject and I encourage you to phone and give yours. When completed, please ask that office to transfer you to Rep. Selby's office so you can request a petition form to sign and return. I understand that OH and IN have eliminated emissions testing and MO needs to do the same. I also understand that the $24 testing fee doesn't even go to the State of Missouri, but instead, is sent to testing equipment headquarters in NJ. If so, does that make any sense? My old Chevys and I thank you for helping us to continue cruisin' on blue highways....Bliss
