Just to let you know on some information regarding 66 in MO and IL. According

to the Secatary of the IL DOT they think it is adequately signed and the

Director of MO DOT says we have no money for 66.

I think it's wonderful that Patty and Tommy are taking the bull by

the horns and are pursuing this. My hats off to them and I think we

can all be thankful for their efforts.

The state of New Mexico has designated rt66 as a scenic by-way. The only state

that has and no, all state don't have to cooperate to have it designated a

scenic by-way.

No, I'm not behind it, but I support the effort. Tommy Pike,

president of the Missouri Route 66 Association, said about a month

ago at a meeting I attended that he's working with the proper

bureaucrats to get the scenic byway designation in Missouri --

including all the alignments, not just one. Patty Kuhn of the

Illinois Route 66 Heritage Project also is doing the same thing. I

also heard through the grapevine through good sources that New Mexico

and Oklahoma are working on this, too.

To have a scenic highway designation for all of Route 66, all the

states have to cooperate. It looks like we're well on our way.

I have one of these Milwaukee Journal atlases from 1932...really cool (they

Mine has no copyright dates on it either but also has the mixture of the

pole marker legend as well as the "correct for the times" federal road

numbers. The cover of mine is 8 X 11 3/4 inches but immediately opens to 15

3/4 X 11 inches, and shows "logs of transcontinental federal highways"

including the incorrectly listed Highway 60 from Chicago to Los Angeles.

I'm posting some highlight and photo op info used for our 2003

Sweetheart Cruise from St. Louis to Marshall, IL.

Illinois has posted the Historic National Road signs across the state

that designate old U.S. 40. Since U.S. 40 is a commissioned highway,

the signs for the current alignment make it simple to follow but it

is not as exciting. Following are some of the photo ops in which you

may be interested: (And they exist nearly everywhere!)

Troy - Sunset Inn (east of town)

Pocahontas - Old National alignment at east edge -- old concrete

marker on dead end section (there is a former highway bridge farther

east of this alignment but it`s inaccessible) -- old alignment that

dead ends in both directions after crossing Shoal Creek (turn left)

Greenville - Functioning movie theater marquee downtown -- retro-

styled diner -- courthouse

Hagarstown - Old concrete bridge remains west of town

Vandalia - First capitol building in the state -- still functioning

Liberty Theater marquee -- cool downtown area. Charlie's Redwood Inn

is a good watering hole.

St. Elmo - Elmo Theater marquee-- Mail Pouch sign on brick building

Altamont - Altamont Inn -- cool downtown area. Lukenbach's Bar and

Grill is a good lunch stop and watering hole.

Keptown - Awesome neon sign for the defunct El Rancho Motel just east

of town

Effingham - Very cool downtown area that includes The Heart marquee

for movie theater.

Teutopolis - "Hoosiers" style high school building -- neat town to

drive through

Jewett - Old alignment includes Grandpa's Place, an antique store --

another concrete road marker

Greenup - "Must-see" covered bridge on west edge -- Greenup Antique

Mall (formerly Ettelbricks' Shoe Factory - offices for the 4 family

owned plants across the street) -- awesome downtown area --

Stockyards Restaurant & Bar -- another old school -- 5 Star Motel

sign -- Meramec Caverns buildings (2) just east of town

Casey - Cool downtown area -- Mobil flying horse at US 40

intersection -- old sign for closed restaurant -- Richards' Farm

Restaurant & Gifts (barn) just east of town on current alignment

Martinsville - Another old school -- Picket Fence Restaurant -- '55

DeSoto for sale, $3,200

Clark Center -- Old, old drivable alignment at Freedom Church sign

just west of town -- short drivable brick alignment east of town at

1400 Road -- another brick alignment farther east at the Baystown

Road exit (can't drive - posted)

Marshall - Marshall Family Restaurant & Lounge -- Frontier Bar --

Diamond Bar -- The Archer House -- Sam's Restaurant & Seafood -- cool

downtown area -- Bishop's Cafe....Bliss

Hi all...There's a neat thing SPEED TV is doing the next couple of

weeks. The host of their Tuesday night show "2 Wheel Tuesday" and a

partner are riding 50cc Yamaha Zuma scooters from Lowes Motor

Speedway in Charlotte, NC to Fontana, CA. Their route takes them

through OK City, Amarillo, Albuquerque, Flagstaff, up to Las Vegas,

and down into Fontana. Since these are illegal on the interstates,

it's only logical which road they'll be on from OK City into Arizona.

A complete itinerary can be found at the SPEED website:

http://speedtv.com/features/562/

Also, watch for updates Monday through Thursday night on

SPEED's "Wind Tunnel with Dave Despain", 10-11pm EST. If any of you

business owners out there on 66 encounter them in the next two weeks,

let us know!

Classic Upland, Calif., Doughnut Shop Enters Its Last Week in Business

By Lisa B. McPheron, Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, Calif. Knight

Ridder/Tribune Business News

Mar. 15--UPLAND, Calif. - A 98-cent coffee and a cake doughnut with

chocolate icing. That's what Upland resident William Gray orders at Winchell's

Donut House on Foothill Boulevard.

On average, he has eaten this combination 14,600 times. That's because he

has gone to the retro doughnut dive twice a day for 20 years.

But that all ends Wednesday.

The retiree, who surprisingly isn't enormous from all the sweet treats,

isn't leaving town.

The shop is being torn down.

"You'd be surprised how many people come here for comfort," Gray said.

"It's not just about coffee and doughnuts, even though that helps."

The shop's lease has been up for two years and there have been

back-and-forth meetings with the property owner and Winchell's Donut Houses. But

in the end, the shop will be torn down for an optometrist's office, Winchell's

employees said.

As city planners encourage, and even require at times new projects on

Foothill Boulevard to have a 1950s nostalgic design, one of the few remaining

authentic remnants of Route 66 heydays will no longer grace Upland when the shop

succumbs to the wrecking ball.

The neon-and-wood sign atop the doughnut house, which author Charles

Phoenix reported in his book "Cruising the Pomona Valley," is the doughnut

chain's oldest sign in Southern California.

"I hate to see old things completely go," Gray said.

The sign will be spared, but anyone interested will have to motor east to

Barstow.

Winchell's Donut Houses, the corporation that runs about 200 other shops,

will donate the iconic 1965 sign to the Route 66 Mother Road Museum in Barstow,

where a display will be devoted to the 56-year-old chain, said Ira James,

Winchell's spokesman.

It doesn't happen often, but it's not unusual for the doughnut houses to

lose a lease, he said.

"It does happen from time to time," James said. "Everyone has a lease, and

they come due."

Since it is an arrangement between a private property owner and a tenant,

Upland City Hall is not a part of the decision-making, said Senior Planner John

Atwater.

However, for Atwater, who encourages Route 66 nostalgic design on Foothill

Boulevard, it's dismal to see the shop's sign go.

"It's a sad day because we are doing whatever we can to promote that look

on Foothill," he said.

Gray doesn't know where he's going to get his coffee come Wednesday, the

shop's last day.

Like Goldilocks with her beds, through trial and error, Gray had found the

perfect cup of coffee. Not bitter and served by a friendly face.

Starbucks is too bitter and expensive, he said. McDonald's had good

coffee, but they recently started using a new bitter brand, Gray added.

"I've never seen anyone leave this place unhappy because of the doughnuts

and the coffee," he said.

During the years the doughnut house has become a fixture in Gray's

admittedly routine days. After the 75-year-old man's wife leaves for work, he

usually gets to the shop at 7:45 a.m. and stays until 9. He comes again in the

afternoon to brew over another cup of coffee.

With the proliferation of fast-food chains and the disappearing coffee

shop, Gray worries he will not find a replacement. There is Winchell's Donut

House in Chino, but he doubts he'll want to make the 20-mile round trip twice a

day.

He'll soon be without the friendly employees, periodic rushes of Upland

High School students, young mothers and their children, other retirees and

nine-to-fivers on breaks.

"It's a nice neighborhood place," Gray said. "I'll miss it."

Jim:

Give me a holler if you want me to put you on the list. The walks

will take about 2 hours or so, and they travel in a circle back to

the starting point. The total distance of each is just under a mile.

The 2 tours cover different territory, the first east and the second

west from the starting point at LaSalle and Jackson. So you are

welcome to come along for either tour, or for both!

I am asking anyone interested to contact me and reserve a spot, just

so the group doesn't get too big to manage. I am FAR from that at

this point, however, so come on up to the Windy City on June 10th!

Hi all! I was forwarded an email today from a Corvair club in Lexington, KY from

a couple in Sunman, IN who organize road rallies throughout the year in Indiana,

Ohio, and Kentucky. By the looks of their website, they seem to put on some good

events. Jennifer & I plan on trying the one on April 23rd, if anyone would like

to join us. Info can be found at their website:

http://www.scenicroadrallies.com/index.asp

Preregistration is $20, and $30 day of the event. The rallies are open to any

registered vehicles, and each team must consist of at least 2 people, and are

limited to 50 vehicles. They seem to be from 60-90 miles in length and last 5-8

hours. Be sure and check out some of the past events. Some of the treks appear

to be tailored to the pickiest of road warriors!

I have had little time to post in the past year, so I thought I would

start working back in with a little trivia question:

Due to realignments, the crossroads of US 30 and US 66 has been

located in three different cities. Can you name all three cities where

30 and 66 once crossed?

Extra points if you can answer without pulling out old maps!

I'm taking a guess and say Joliet, Lockport, and Romeoville.

I know Joliet and Plainfield are two of them. My

other guess would be 30 hits Lockport at some point.

So that would be my final guess of the three. Right

or wrong no maps have been pulled out.

Interestingly, last night I drove on and crossed both

those roads when I went to the Riviera. For about an

hour+ it was just Bob and me takin' it easy and having

some drinks.

Pretty interesting outfit. I recognize several of the spots pictured or

mentioned. Seems like they've been operating right between us (Indy & Cincy)

for over a year and I had not heard of them and apparently you hadn't

either. I can't join you on the 23rd but am definitely interested in your

experience. Looks like something that could come in handy when a limited

range road trip fix is needed. Or maybe an excuse for you Hoosiers and us

Buckeyes to hook up for a Bluegrass drive.

I had seen the cover at the eGroup home a couple of weeks back and was

starting to get nervous. Not to worry. The latest American Road was in my
