Guest Alex Burr
Absolutely fantastic photos - a trip down 66, and never leave home!!!! Makes me want to do it again - but I'm afraid I'd be disappointed not being able to remember many places my high school friend and I passed by on our trip back in 1953. To many years have passed. But, a photo or two of yours does jog the memory a little. Thanks for the trip. Safe and Happy Travels. Guest Shellee Graham
Sorry folks, Shellee did not mean to debut a message on the Egroup with a duplicate of all the posts, and a silly message to my friend Jane Dippel. I do hope you can find it in your hearts to forgive me. Now, for more trivia -- something I enjoy ... I hope that all of you know that Jane's real name is "VESTA." I love that name. So Jane is known by several aliases: * "Vesta Jane" * "Officer Vesta" (since she is a retired corrections officer) * "Hane" (Jane in Spanish, hehe) * "Ambassador of Missouri Route 66" (that is something I think is truly fitting of Jane) * "Main Street" (that's her CB handle Thankya, Shellee Graham (alias "Double EE" cb handle)

Guest Stroud, Dena
Hi there. I am new here and live in NC. My husband has a harley and we love to ride. I am looking for any good places to ride in the NC, VA, TN area. Week before last we drove a total of 550 miles on the parkway and around it (after we got there) we hauled the bike on a trailer. It was so pretty and we have been on it and Skyline Drive many times but I want something new. Any suggestions? There are other vintage motels in that area, but I haven't heard any recent reports about them. > (6) Same for a neighborhood saloon where the die hard cheeseheads > hang out? > Fuzzy's is former Packers lineman Fuzzy Thurston's bar. There's also the Stadium View and 1st & 10 around there. Kroll's also is a famous bar/restaurant west of Lambeau that serves cheeseburgers with a smidge of butter on them. And you may already have this planned, but make sure you DO check out the Packer Hall of Fame. Guest Alex Burr
From Benton Harbor north is MI 63 (Lake Shore/Blue Star Highway) to South Haven - becomes MI 2. You will have to get onto I-196 at Exit 41 - becomes I-196/U S 31. Continue north on I-196 to Business I-196 into Holland - then U S 31 north. Local area folks may have a way to miss the I-196 route. Guest Ken
Greetings All, I'm sure there is no conflict nor competition about announcing this here. We're ALL true roadies, right! Many of whom love the Mother Road. So, here goes. Just got off the phone with the folks from True West Magazine. They contacted me today for some info and ideas. The magazine is slated to have an article devoted to Route 66 in their November 2003 issue. Just wanted to let ya'll know about it in case some roadies and collectors want to pick up that issue. I'll be looking forward to seeing it myself. Be on the lookout for it! Guest Nicole
Hi all- I am finally able to post a brief note about the wonderful Grand Canyon trip we took. We stayed in Seligman for 2 nights....which proved to be quite convenient as it's pretty much the halfway point from home and the Grand Canyon. It was also great to finally be out there supporting a Route 66 M&P. Did the Sunset Crater drive.......it was so nice to be back in GREEN and fresh mountain air, I just love that. Flagstaff is so beautiful.....if I ever craved seasons and cold again (highly unlikely), the first place I'd move to is Flag. Had to stop at the Little Colorado River Gorge on Hwy 64......I wonder how many people pass that up and don't even realize what they're missing. That place is truly amazing....and it was really cool because we actually saw people hiking down below on the floor. But if you aren't on top of it, you will fly right by the turn and not even see what you're driving by. Thanks so much Landrunner for telling me about that place......probably never would of found it otherwise. Not to mention...it's a great way to take to get to the South Rim. FYI FOR ALL GRAND CANYON TRAVELERS: If you are coming in from the east end on Hwy 64, there is heavy construction going on right when you enter the park. It threw us off and we missed that watchtower that is there when you first go in that way. So be sure to pay attention to where you're going and go slow, or else you'll miss the new turns they're putting in, and you'll get lost. Yep....I did it a couple of times. (Surprise, surprise) Had a coyote almost come up to the car.....he looked like he was used to being fed by humans. I had that same thing happen last time I was up there.....I have a feeling it's a common occurence. It was still really cool to see one of them up close. And of course.....we just sat and stared at the Canyon in awe, it never ceases to leave me scrambling for words, it's too big and too magnificant to actually comprehend, isn't it? We of course stopped at the Grandview Trail, where us 2 smokers (me trying to quit before I take the 8 mile hike into Supai from Hilltop in less than 4 weeks, with my mother. Good Lord.....I'm still wondering what I got myself into this time) then decided to hike down on foot like it was nothing, strolling along the Canyon wall....and suddenly realizing that we were going pretty far down and we had a loooong climb up. We were with a cluster of about 4 other people going uphill and trying to resurface at the Rim. When we finally did....you sure could tell who the smokers were. That's reason #356 of why I should quit. Yuk! Made a stop in Williams on the way there and back....ate breakfast there, and dinner. Goldies, and the Pine Country.....both excellent places to eat. Goldie's right on 66, and Pine Country just off of the M.R. Williams is where I always notice that clean mountain air.....geez, if I only liked weather. he he Had a nice time on the drive back on Sunday....... 66'd it all the way back and stopped in Hackberry to see John Pritchard, it was a blast. Lots of people out at the Hackberry General Store that day, and lots to see. John was proudly displaying 2 rattles off of 2 rattlesnakes he had recently shot and killed within the past week. Yikes....watch where you're walking out there!!! Nothing beats that Route 66 atmosphere as you're just passing through, and stopping by. The wonderful people you see and know, who are the next best thing to family and always have interesting things to fill you in on about what's been going on in their neck of the woods. I'm so lucky to be a roadie......otherwise I'd really be missing out. Ahhh, I needed that trip. Can't wait to do it again!!! Nicole --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Guest Russell S. Rein
Drive the shore - stay off those Interstates - take M63 north out of Benton Harbor along the lake, it turns into Blue Star Highway later, continue thru South Haven (may be signed as County Rd 2 or Adams Rd.), stay to the left to continue on Lakeshore Dr. at the Y just noth of Glenn. At Douglas make a right on Center St., and then a left to continue north back on County Rd. 2 - Blue Star Highway. North of Saugatuck the road turns northeast - you will cross I-196, then in about 2 1/2 miles you will turn left at a Y to continure directly north on County Rd. 2 - Blue Star Highway (or may be signed as 58th St.). Continue directly north - cross I-196 again, don't get on US 31 but continue north on Washington St (Bus. I-196 and Bus.30) into downtown Holland, at 32nd St. bear to the right to continue following Bus. I-96 on Michigan Ave. Continue north on River Ave., don't take the right to follow Bus I-96 on 8th St. Stay north then turn left onto W. Lakewood Blvd. It ends at Lakeshore Dr. - turn right and you're travelling north along the shore again. Continue north on Lakeshore Dr. - it turns into Sheldon Rd. in Grand Haven. In downtown Grand Haven turn right on Washington St., and then after a few blocks left on N. Beacon St. - US 31 to continue north. Follow the US 31 business loop through Muskegon. Continue north on US. 31 and there's another business loop through Pentwater. At the T with US 10 turn left for downtown Ludington. Here's the link for the S. S. Badger car ferry: http://www.ssbadger.com/defaultContent.asp $49 for the car + $47 per person. This is the water route for old US 10 which starts at the Detroit River - Woodward Ave. The ferry takes about 3 1/2 hours. Hope for good weather - there is a swell and sometimes some nasty wave action on Lake Michigan. Get a behind the ear seasickness patch from your Doctor. Sounds like fun. ypsi-slim On Tue, 17 Aug 2004 13:48:17 -0000 "brownwho63" <wefly66@earthlink.net> writes: Navigator and I are planning a trip to the Three Rivers, MI area with friends in the near future and would like to venture a little farther north up the Lake Michigan coastline after that. Guest George Ashburn
I'm a native of the Columbus/Central Ohio Area now living in New Mexico. (Born in Columbus, Raised in Licking County, the next county to the west of Muskingum where Zanesville is.) I don't know much about the motels on US 40, but here is a restaurant I highly recomend. Mickey's. (About 5 miles east of the Zanesville City Limits.) It's a classic old roadside restaurant that at one time, I guess was part of a motel property based on the old buildings behind it. If you're heading east, it is on your left hand side of the road. The Omelettes are stuffed with meat and quite filling even by my standards. (I'm a rather large individual who can put it away.) The fried chicken is great and their pies are nice. The people are friendly. You'll like it. Hope this helps. --- okydokey89 <okydokey@aol.com> wrote: > Hi All, > > We are planning a weekend trip to do some of the > National Road in OH. > I got info for Zanesville and saw advertisements for > the Nighty-Nite > and Sycamore motels. Guest bakerhab2003
PRESS RELEASE Open house events resume the first weekend in October Announcing an Open House at the Goffs Schoolhouse Museum and Cultural Center On October 4-5, 2003. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 28, 2003 FOR MORE INFORMATION: Jo Ann Casebier Mojave Desert Heritage & Cultural Association 37198 Lanfair Road -- Goffs Essex, CA 92332 Phone 760-733-4482 email goffs@eastmojave.net Goffs Schoolhouse Museum and Cultural Center Plans Open House Weekends to Introduce Visitors to a Treasure of the East Mojave and a must see attraction on Route 66 GOFFS SCHOOLHOUSE MUSEUM and CULTURAL CENTER MONTHLY OPEN HOUSE EVENTS 2003 - 2004 The Mojave Desert Heritage & Cultural Association announces monthly open house events at the Goffs Schoolhouse for 2003 - 2004. The Schoolhouse and adjacent Cultural Center grounds will be open for public visitation the first weekend of each month from October through June 9:00 a.m. through 5:00 p.m. (Specific weekends are: 4- 5 October, 1-2 November, 6-7 December, 3-4 January, 7-8 February, 6-7 March, 3-4 April, 1-2 May, 5-6 June) The Goffs Schoolhouse was constructed in 1914 and served the region until 1937, at which time the present school was built in Essex and the Goffs School abandoned. It is one of the few remaining structures in Goffs located on the original 1926 alignment of U. S. Highway 66. The school served the needs of families of railroaders, highway people, miners, and ranchers. The Schoolhouse was restored to its 1914 configuration by the Association in 1998. Some work is ongoing, but it is now fitted out with displays of artwork and artifacts depicting the cultural history of the Mojave Desert. There are many artifacts (old vehicles, mining machinery, and much more) on the adjacent grounds. To facilitate public visitation, the Association has published a "Guide to the Goffs Cultural Center" booklet for the convenience of visitors which is keyed to 40 numbered stations inside the Schoolhouse and about 100 numbered pegs around the grounds. With the aid of this interpretive booklet, visitors can spend several hours enjoying the displays on a self-guided basis. Picnic areas are available for visitors. On October 11, 2001, the Goffs Schoolhouse was placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the U. S. Department of the Interior. It is one of the few buildings along old U. S. Highway 66 in California and the only one-room schoolhouse in all of southern California on that prestigious national register. The Mojave Desert Heritage & Cultural Association was formed as a nonprofit tax-exempt corporation in 1993 with a mission to: "Research and educate the public with the natural and cultural history of the Mojave Desert regions through operation of a regional research center including a library and archives, restoration of historic buildings, interpretation of backcountry trails, publication of educational guide books and historical monographs and periodicals in concert with government agencies and people of good faith everywhere." The Mojave Desert Archives, situated in buildings adjacent to the Goffs Schoolhouse, embraces more than 6,000 volumes pertaining to the history of the Desert west, more than 700 taped oral history interviews conducted with desert "old-timers" with firsthand knowledge, more then 40,000 historical photographs of the Desert west, 4,000 historic maps, and much more. These materials are in special collections that are made available with advance arrangement to qualified students and writers doing in-depth research on the Mojave Desert. The Mojave Desert Heritage & Cultural Association is a nonprofit tax- exempt corporation. No charge is made for admission to the Schoolhouse and adjacent property, donations are welcome. To get there. From the direction of Barstow take I-40 east about 110 miles to a point one mile east of Fenner Rest Stop and exit the Interstate where a sign says "Goffs Road." Turn left under the freeway bridge and follow blacktop Goffs Road for 11 miles to Goffs. From Needles or Las Vegas Area take U.S. Highway 95 south (from Searchlight) or north (from I-40 up out of Needles) to the point where 95 crosses the main line of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway. Turn west on Goffs Road (south of the tracks) and travel 14 miles to Goffs. The Schoolhouse is on the North side of the tracks at the intersection of Goffs and Lanfair Roads -- for a positive identification, there are two windmills on the Goffs Schoolhouse property, the only ones in Goffs. Special arrangements can be made for visitation to the Schoolhouse by groups or at other times during the year by appointment. For additional information contact the Association at 760-733-4482 -- or email goffs@eastmojave.net -- or visit the Association's web site at www.mdhca.org. Guest bakerhab2003
Please accept my apologies for flooding the group with the Goffs Schoolhouse Museum press release, and even though I am very proud of our museum and love to show it off, I only meant to send the press release one time. I obviously did something wrong. Again, my apologies. I did go in and delete two of the copies, so those of you reading on line, should only see one release, unfortunately if you have them delivered to your mailbox you may have gotten up three copies. Guest Les
I think this is my first post. I drive an 18-wheeler professionally. Here are a couple of routes I have taken in the last 18 months when I wished I would have been in my Sprite instead of a Freightliner with 53ft of trailer behind me. A road has interest for me if it has a serpentine nature. Vistas are important, but not as much as the ups, downs, lefts and right. West Virginia: State Route 55 from Strasburg VA west to Morefield W.VA. Nice tight two lane with lots of ups and downs, twist and bends. I think the 4 mile long 9% down grade on the WV side of the line would be much more fun in the sprite. Pennsylvania: State routes 413, 611, 412 from the Philly area to Bethlehem. Again, curvy and hilly, but going thru some cute little towns. The trees were beginning to change color on 10/4. California: US 395 & State Route 36 From the NV border to Red Bluff. This was an awesome drive, except for the fact that legally I was 10 feet too long to be on it. Nice climbs up the moutains to I think 5500+ feet. Great vistas with at least one Scenic overlook. Guest Denny Gibson
And that reminds me that... I drove AZ-89A north to south in '03 and thought it a fantastic road. Last month I drove it south to north and was again super impressed. In between I had driven the Tail of the Dragon (US-129) and found myself comparing the two. The Dragon boasts 318 curves in 11 miles and I was amused and only a little surprised to see a shop in Jerome selling shirts with "158 curves in 12 miles - The Mingus Mountain Drive" printed on them. Naturally, the Tail of the Dragon has its shirts, too. They are both great roads. The Dragon wins for "ups, downs, lefts, and right". Mingus Mountain gets the nod for "vistas". Maybe someone should make a "476 curves in 23 miles" T-shirt. --Denny > -----Original Message----- > From: Bob Reynolds [mailto:roustabout@starband.net] > Sent: Wednesday, October 05, 2005 8:13 PM > To: AMERICAN_ROAD@yahoogroups.com > Subject: [AMERICAN_ROAD] Re: A couple of cool routes for grins > > > --- In AMERICAN_ROAD@yahoogroups.com, "Les" <cutflowerguy@y...> wrote: > > A road has interest for me if it has a > > serpentine nature.
