Guest Hank Hallmark
Mugwump's is on Route 66 in Daggett! It is an old "service station" that now has a lot of junk accumulated around it and appears abandoned. It is on the SW corner of the intersection of Route 66 as you come to the stop sign in Daggett. The Daggett Cafe was just across the intersection. I have wondered for years where that name came from and now maybe there's a "subtle" reason--maybe the old owner "took an independent, noncommittal attitude toward political issues".... Hank The word has American roots - Native American, in fact. Despite appearances, 'mugwump' is not a compound of 'mug' but rather a loan into colonial American English from Massachusetts, the now extinct language of the Algonquian-speaking Indians of eastern Massachusetts. In a 17th century translation of the Bible into Massachusetts, the missionary John Eliot used 'mugquomp' to mean 'duke,' 'lord,' or 'chief.' The term really came into its own in 1884, when James G. Blaine received the Republican Party's nomination for the presidency. Many Republicans refused to have anything to do with his candidacy and instead supported the Democratic candidate, Grover Cleveland. Those Republicans who remained loyal to their party accused the bolters of a lofty and supercilious attitude and nicknamed them 'mugwumps.' The word had previously been used as a jesting, slightly derogatory term for someone who considered himself an important person. The name given to Republican dissidents in 1884 came later to be used for anyone who took an independent, noncommittal attitude toward political issues. In the 20th century, it was jokingly defined as someone who sits on the political fence with his 'mug' on one side and his 'wump' on the other. Guest Denny Gibson
But the term REALLY came into its own in 1964 when some folks used it for the name of a musical group. A couple of them (John & Zal) would turn up later in the Lovin' Spoonful and two others (Cass & Denny) would reappear in the Mammas & Pappas and sing of their Mugwump days in the song Creeque Alley. :-) Denny > -----Original Message----- > From: Hank Hallmark [mailto:thehallmarks@earthlink.net] > Sent: Thursday, September 01, 2005 11:11 AM > To: Route66 Discussion Group; American Road > Cc: California Rte 66 Assn; Calif Rte 66 Museum > Subject: [AMERICAN_ROAD] Mugwump's on Route 66--in Daggett! > > Mugwump's is on Route 66 in Daggett! > > It is an old "service station" that now has a lot of junk > accumulated around it and appears abandoned. Guest Mike Ward
Denny, I happen to have TWO copies of the only album by the Mugwumps. One of them is still in an original unopened plastic sleeve that holds the actual record. For those of you who are old enough to remember those flat black pieces of plastic with grooves on them, some of them came in polyethylene sleeves with a perforated strip you would tear off to get to the record. Actually, John Sebastian wasn't ever a member of the Mugwumps. It was James, or Jim Hendricks (no, not Jimi Hendrix) who pretty much disappeared from the music scene after the late 60s-early 70s. Guest Denny Gibson
Wow, I had no idea that the Mugwumps even released an album let alone that they sold two copies of it;-) John thinks he was a member ( http://www.johnbsebastian.com/ ) but I read elsewhere that it was early on; Probably before the album. It seems that stories of your music collection are founded in truth. I'm just beginning to get an appreciation for it. --Denny > -----Original Message----- > From: Mike Ward [mailto:flyboy1946@hotmail.com] > Sent: Thursday, September 01, 2005 3:58 PM > To: AMERICAN_ROAD@yahoogroups.com > Subject: Re: [AMERICAN_ROAD] Mugwump's on Route 66--in Daggett! > > Denny, > > I happen to have TWO copies of the only album by the > Mugwumps. Guest drivewdave@aol.com
regarding Mugwumps, the original topic was an oddball name for a gas station, seems like it took a bit of a swerve into 60s pop music. trying to steer this thing out of the ditch, the best oddball name for a gas station is one I first discovered back in the 70s from a late 40s postcard Two Stiffs Selling Gas If I remember correct it was in Nevada, two WWII vets came back from the war and went into business, don't know whatever happened to it. Guest Anne Margo Langston
Hi, I've been lurking for a bit now but haven't posted yet. My husband and I will be going to Philadelphia the last week of August to meet our new granddaughter. While we're there, we wanted to take some nice drives. Anyone have any ideas? Something we can do in a day would be best, and bear in mind that we'll have a three month old and a nursing mother in the car, so we'll need to stop periodically. Thanks in advance, Anne

Guest Milana Wells
I might just add that I've spent a lot of time in Albuquerque and the rest of New Mexico, and I've never had trouble trouble with the traffic authorities. But then, I don't drive when under the influence, and I don't run red lights. It just broke my heart a few years ago when I sweet young woman I knew, a person everyone who knew her loved, was killed by a drunken driver. He was driving in the wrong lane on a road with a divider, and hit her car headon. (And he was an illegal alien, too). New Mexico has good reason to be strict about traffic regulations. (And I'm not advocating unconstitutional measures -- but New York City was confiscating accused DUI drivers' cars, on Mayor Rudi Giuliani's orders). Guest Mike Ward
It was just a mere 20 years ago today that a group of dignitaries cut a ribbon in Williams, Arizona, opening a stretch of Interstate 40 and bypassing the last stretch of Route 66. That led to the final decommissioning of the road early in 1985 by AASHTO. Would anyone have thought then that the old road would have as much interest round the country and around the world as it does today? That is due in no small part to folks like the members of this group. Thanks to everyone! Mike
Guest ken
Group, Well,........I use to drive long haul years ago. I do agree that with anyone caught while under the influence should get their vehicles impounded/confiscated! But there are those times at light signals where the light changes so fast that you just may have to make a quick decision on whether or not to keep going through the signal. I always try to be prepared for this to happen, But sometimes you just have to keep going when you get to the "point of no return" for safety's sake! I can see though that if it were a clearly intentional type of red light running. Then by all means it's time to impound or what ever action is necesary! It just may be one of us that gets our very own lives taken by someone running a red light well after it has changed! Also just a little of my encounter input; Being on the road I have been to countless fatal accidents. The one that stands out the most in my memory was on Easter Sunday morning 1990 or 1991.(the year is a little foggy in my mind, but the day is hard to forget) I was going from Milwaukee Wi. to the Los Angeles Ca. area with a load of equipment & supplies. There were 7 trucks in our group rolling southbound at roughly 7 am Mountain Time Zone together chatting on the CB radio. We were on I-15 in Utah about a hundred miles or so south of Salt Lake City UT.. I always had a mounted Scanner in my rig so I could get the weather etc. so I could make a decision while enroute whether to change my routing to avoid serious snow storms, bad weather & or to learn of any road closings due to accidents shutting down the roadway ahead! In fact we all had them. Also listening in to aircraft was nice to pass the time rolling through the mountains. Well anyways, As we were rolling along we heard a conversation between an officer & dispatcher. Then we came upon the accident scene that was being broadcasted. The car was a big blue 4 door laying on its side in the middle of the interstate lanes of travel. A drunk driver was going the wrong way in the northbound lanes. They had colided head on. They were on their way to Grandmothers house for Easter Sunday. Well as we listened in we could hear children crying in the background, The officer was weeping too & mentioned that they were headed to Grandmothers house for Easter Sunday & he said that he didn't know what to tell the children, The dispatcher was at a loss too! ..............Just what do you say to someone who just lost their "MOTHER" due to some jackass! who had a few too many! Especially on a day such as this! I've been to many fatal red light running & under the influence accident scenes! Maybe if some of you out there were to see people with missing heads, limbs,& very badly mutalated bodies like I have seen in my travels. You'd probably change your mind about many law issues! Sometimes I don't know how the law enforcement officers do it due to selfish sensless acts mentioned! Just wanted to add my view about the issue so I'll just leave it at that! I'm glad to see posts from both sides of this issue! Conversation Right? No Flames intended on my part! Thanks again for a very good site! Guest Harmon
In IL when you are making a left turn and are within the intersection when the light turns yellow, it is legal to conclude your turn when the light turns to red and it's safe to do so. Is IL unique, or is that the case elsewhere (like ABQ), too? Bob
Guest Mike Ward
Bob, It's also legal in Arizona, if you are in the intersection. The problem here is caused by people who think they should also be able to go on the red light if you they were within 5-6 car lengths of the intersection. Guest Patsy Terrell
When I did television news, I saw my fair share of gorey scenes. The blood never bothered me, but the sounds that a person who's seriously injured makes haunted me. I'm glad there are people willing to be law enforcement officers and nurses and doctors and EMTs for I certainly couldn't do it. I got into a big argument with my producer one night because I wanted to show the back of a car that had been at fault in an accident, killing 5 people, that had a bumper sticker on it that said, "why, yes, as a matter of fact, I do own the road." I wanted to show it because to me it indicated a personality type that is likely to cause an accident. The producer's argument was that it could have been on there when they got the car second hand. That was a good argument. I confirmed that was NOT the case. I still lost the argument, which is why in TV news you want to be behind the scenes making decsions instead of on-camera talent. Talent is a dime a dozen. But, after a particularly gruesome Sunday afternoon accident with children left without parents after being hit by a drunk driver it became a moot point. I decided I didn't want to do that for a living anymore and quit, going back to work in radio where I didn't have to be on the scene at such things as much. The open road is a fascinating place. We talk about it all the time. It holds many delights and feeds our wanderlust like nothing else. It can also be a dangerous place and it's good to always keep that in mind. >to see people with missing heads, limbs,& very badly mutalated bodies like I have seen in my travels.
