WOW. What awesome pics! Truly truly impressive! Aside from the pictures you

provided the links for....I really like your Seligman pics also.

Can you explain to me (us) a little more about your cross-country bike trips?

How often do you do them, what was the furthest you've gone in one day, do you

go alone or with other people....etc. I'd be interested to know!

P.S. For such a small town (Population: 30,000), Bullhead City has AWFUL

traffic.

I think I've posted it to this list before, but if anyone wants to see some

Payson via AZ 260), but after Prescott I rode 66 from Ash Fork to Barstow

(with a misguided detour through Bullhead City, which had too much traffic

I spent 1959 t0 July 1976 (after a year in the

Marine reserve and 4 years in the Navy) in the outfit

that takes care of the jarheads - the Coast Guard.

Hi all-

I believe I made an error in my post about our drive last Sunday. In

fact.....I'm surprised that not one of you educated roadies caught it yet!!

Usually any errors are corrected immediately! ;-)

I said we went through Jerome, Camp Verde, Cottonwood, and Sedona. I believe

Camp Verde is accessible on I-17, say if you were heading north from Phoenix,

before taking the 89-A exit to Sedona. I meant to say Verde Valley, not Camp

Verde. Although close in proximity, and close in name......I believe it's Verde

Valley that runs along 89-A after Jerome rather than Camp Verde.

Just had to correct myself-

Old maps are fun to collect, share, trade or even sell once in while! I have

about 5 or 6 pre-US Highway maps (old trails maps). They are in excellent shape

and it is nice to see some routes that the US Route Numbered Highways went!

MAPS tell us a lot of history and I think its nice to go back it time for a

moment!

First was a small U S highway map from 1940 - great item to take out

and look at. Appears to have come from some sort of large b&w atlas,

similar to the 1937 Memphis street map I got a little ways back.

The other was a collection of state road maps dating from the 1930's

to the 1970's. Of note:

Bay Petroleum Company - Nebraska, 1950 (this is one I've never heard

of before);

Conoco - Arkansas - 1940's (shows a small map of Mempis with U S 61,

64, 70, 79 and 63 crossing the Hernando Bridge - so 63 did go into

Memphis at one time);

Conoco - Ohio - 1940's; Iowa - 1950's; Oklahoma - early 1950's

Sinclair - Kansas - late 1933, early 1934 (according to census

date);

Gulf - Colorado-Nebraska-Wyoming - 1936 (census date);

Philips 66 - Wisconsin - 1936 (census date);

Gulf - Pennsylvania - late 1930's (PA turnpike not shown);

Those are the oldies (to me anyway). There was also a AAA

Texas-Oklahoma 1966-1967 issue and a Standard Nebraska with a 1960

census date.

Lot of fun pouring over all these old maps and seeing the U S before

it was bound up in the Interstates.

Thanks Mike for the information! I love collecting maps and atlases! I have

few old trail maps, US highway maps, and Road atlases ( like my 1954 road

atlas). Also, World Atlases as well, such as my 1894 world atlas.

Well-looks like the trip may be longer than first figured. So far

I'm into Missouri, jast past Springfield-and I'm already into the

16th day.

The planning evolved into 100-150 miles per day, allowing plenty of

time to stop along the way. The groups will depart between 9 and

9:30, with rendezvous planned for 6pm at the next overnight stop.

Once I finish the planning for the route, the maps will be posted

using Adobe PDF 5.1 at the Thunder on 66 egroup:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Thunderon662005

I would really appreciate feedback on the route maps-and any places

you think I should stop, email me with the approximate location or

the address, please, so I can add them to the map.

I'm trying to catch up on mail and that includes the latest AR

magazine. Another great job with neat surprises on every page.

As someone who once lived on and under the 3C Highway, Frank

Brusca's article immediately caught my eye. Good to read about

something in my neighborhood and, not surprisingly, Frank was able

to teach me plenty about this "familiar" route. The 3C was part of

my 2001 C2C2C (http://www.dennygibson.com/C2C2C) but I see that my

coverage (days 4 & 5) was a bit skimpy.

Frank, I'm still just about one block off of the 3C (US22/OH3) so

you could have stopped by for coffee on one of your research runs.

Thanks for shining some light on one of the lesser known named

highways.

Nice trip. The car-bike combination give you a mix of ground

covering ability & intimate visits that's kind of rare. My own bike

rides go driveway-to-driveway rather than coast-to-coast. I liked

the "artist of the day" thing, too. But I am wondering, with your

obvious interest in music and a ride that came fairly close to

Austin, why no visit to the self proclaimed "Live Music Capital of

the World"?

BTW, I've requested an account at the mob-rule county site. Looks

like fun. Just hope it doesn't twist future travels too much;-)

The Indiana National Road Association has produced an outstanding

Driving Tour Guide which highlights many historic stops along the

156 miles of the National Road in the Hoosier State. The National

Road in Indiana was designated State Scenic Byway status in 1996,

National Scenic Byway status in 1998, and the entire National Road

was designated an All-American Road in 2002.

Highlighted in the guide are 28 sites between Richmond and Terre

Haute, including The Madonna of the Trail in Richmond, Trump's

Texaco Museum in Knightstown, White River State Park in Indianapolis

(featuring the 1916 bridge which carried National Road/US 40

travelers), The Diner in Plainfield, which was mentioned in Frank

Brusca's feature in the latest AR (My dad & I highly recommend the

Roast Beef Manhattan), and a restored 1931 gas station at Rose-

Hulman University in Terre Haute.

I traveled the National Road last Saturday from the west side of

Indianapolis to just over the Illinois border. Hats off to the INRA!

The signage is some of the best (from an accuracy standpoint) for an

historic road I've seen...comparable to that of Route 66 in

Illinois. Thanks to the guide and signage, I found some ancient

sections of NR I never knew existed.

For more info and a guide, contact the INRA at:

(765) 478-3172

or write:

Indiana National Road Association

P.O. Box 284

Cambridge City, IN 47327

They have a website, but it's not up yet: www.indiananationalroad.org

You can also join the association for as little as $5.

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to post and let all of you know that the Illinois Route 66

Association has the information on their web site about the 2004 Motor tour.

Starts in St Louis and ends in Chicago this year. Last year over 185 cars

participated. What a great time.

For information you can go to their web site

The welcome center in Richmond is a great source of travel info as

well as some US 40 merchandise which is slowly coming on the scene.

I frequently take 40 through IL while on my way to St. Louis....good

Happy Easter Fellow Roadie Friends!

Have some great news for everyone! The U.S. Postal Service has

without hesitation approved two very fine official pictorial

postmarks commemorating the Tulsa Route 66 International Festival AND

the renaming/dedication of Tulsa's 11th Street Bridge!!! Q:)

Be sure to collect these two postmarks before they are historically

lost in time!

Would like to mention that the postmark artworks were created by our

own group member Carolyn Hasenfratz (Jeep Girl)! She really did

justice coming up with some great postmarks to memorialize the events!

A BIG Thank You goes out to Carolyn for the giving of her time and

talents to provide all of us and the general public worldwide, a

great and collectable piece of Route 66 history! Thanks Carolyn!

I have upload pictures of the two forementioned postmarks into our

E-Group files section at:

<http://groups.yahoo.com/group/route66/files>

The files are titled:

66 Postmark - Tulsa Festival.doc

66 Postmark - Tulsa Bridge.doc

The postmarks will be available during at the festival at the mobile

post office booth. If you cannot be at the event to collect the

postmark, you may do so by gathering up your items that you wish to

be postmarked (books, postcards, maps, memorabilia, etc,...just about

anything that can bear a 37 cent stamp and have a postmark applied

onto), and mail them before 30 days after the event(s) date with the

proper amount of return postage to:

Postmaster

P.O. Box 9998

Tulsa, Oklahoma 74103

Hope to see ya'll at the event and out on the open road.

God Bless and Happy Trails.

Just got back from our first road trip through California, and I too

was fascinated by this. I also found the use of the word "freeway"

interesting. As a lifelong midwesterner, we just don't refer to

roads in this manner. We have expressways, tollways, Interstates,

highways, turnpikes, routes, but we just don't have "freeways."

In Chicago, the interstates are referred to as "I-90", "I-290", etc.

However, if an expressway has been named locally in addition to its

numerical designation, then it might be referred to as "The

Kennedy," "The Eisenhower", and so on. But NEVER, "The 90".

Also, when it comes to following U.S. or Illinois state highways

through Chicago, don't bother asking a Chicagoan for directions.

With the possible exception of US 41 down Lake Shore Drive,

Chicagoans have no concept of numbered routes running down their

streets. If you get lost and run into the corner gas station to

ask, "how do I get back on U.S. 12 westbound?" you will get a blank

stare and a mystified shrug of the shoulders. Streets are referred

David,

You made me chuckle. You're right of course but it

made me chuckle. I didn't know as a kid growing up

that the Dan Ryan had a route number at all. Then when

I did find out it was East and West I-94 that mixed me

up even more, because here it runs north and south.

Simply didn't make sense to a young girl.

Just found out that my computer has the KLETZ virus. This

particular virus sends or tries to send emails to everyone in my

address book and is now trying to contact some or all of you folks on

this board.

Soooo....I'll be visiting my local computer store to buy an anti-

virus program which my web supporter says will solve the problem.

Thought the computer came equipped with the anti-virus feature but my

system tools program says there's a "driver" missing. Anyway, if you

receive any weird emails from my address please be advised I'm trying

to resolve the problem.

In Dallas/Ft. Worth its just insane. Listening to the traffic reports on the

radio is a hoot. There is a backup on northbound I-35 EAST, a wreck on

southbound I-35 WEST, and construction on eastboad Northwest Highway.

Then of course we have freeways named for dead people so out-of-towners have

no idea where they are, or how to find them. There is the Tom Landry,

Woodall Rodgers, Stemmons, RL Thornton, Marvin D. Love, LBJ, CF Hawn, Walton

Walker - and those are just the FREEways! Not to mention like every other

metropolis, city, town, community, neighborhood and wide-spot-in-the-road of

America - Big D. has their MARTIN LUTHER KING Boulevard... BUT, we also have

a MALCOLM X Blvd! Yee haw -- we got all the bases covered!

That is why I like where I live..It is very simple. Go 2 miles east, turn right

at the Jone's place. ( Of course, the Jones haven't lived there in 30 years and

there have been 4 families that have lived there since.); head down to the the

Smith's, that is the house that needs painting and the screeen door is missing;

make another right just pass the bridge, just don't forget to latch the gate

back after you go through.

I think you get the idea.

Subject: [AMERICAN_ROAD] Re: Highway Nicknames

Streets are referred

to by name ONLY--Irving Park Road, Elston Avenue, Western Avenue,

Clybourn, 35th Street, Roosevelt Road. Its as if the route number

signs posted on the corners are completely invisible to the natives.
