I haven't checked out the site yet but it looks like it might be

interesting. Gary Long from Fenton, MO (SW St. Louis) is walking

across America to lose weight. He started his trip at the St. Louis

arch on February 15 and has already entered Indiana - 20 pounds

lighter. His wife posts his journey at:

Pat, Mom 'n Pops in West County are pretty much just a memory. You'll

be staying very close to the Smoke House and it's a long-time favorite

of many. Just go west on 40 from the 2Tree and it will be at the

bottom of the hill on the left (south) side of the highway just as you

enter the valley.

The Smoke House was devistated by the flood in '93 and was such a

favorite of locals that they pitched in and helped the owner get the

place up and running again.

We had dinner there once a few years ago and enjoyed the atmosphere,

food, and service. I suggest that you and Jennifer give it a

try....Bliss

I really like this travel photo essay style of the Roadtrip. The photographs

are great, even the camel! The links to the Webshots photo album and the

historical information allows me the luxury of being an armchair traveler.

I have a question on how to read these posts. It may be that it is my

dial-up connection that makes it difficult to view photos, but I wonder whether

the

photos are seen by you other members with fast connections along with the

written descriptions in some posts of this type. I understand that in this

particular that Bob has intentionally separated them by uploading the photos to

Webshots, but I wonder if there are ways to have the pictures and narrative

together. Is there and, if so, does anyone know how to do it? I love reading

about

the American Roads.

Hey.. My nephew is starting at Purdue university in the fall. I'd like

to take either my vespa or old motorcycle there, but i prefer two lane

blacktops like old 66.

does anyone have an idea of a decent route?

Thanks and travel safe,

Hello:

It's been years, so somebody with more recent knowledge may have a

better way. But If it was me, I would take US41 out of Chicago, then

pick up US 231 just west of Crown Point, IN. You could then follow 231

all the way to West LaFayette.

If somebody else has a better idea, speak up!

Mike,

Off the top of my head, a couple of routes would exist. One would

be to take US 41 out of Chicago and branch off onto US 52 northwest

of Fowler and take it into Lafayette. However, there is a lot of semi

traffic on 41 and it's 4-lane divided. Vespas and 18 wheelers are

never a good combo.

Another one would be mainly two-lane. That would be taking 41 out

of Chicago and branching off onto US 231 at St. John, IN. It'll be 2-

lane from that point all the way down to just northwest of West

Lafayette where 231 is co-signed with US 52. There might be a little

more to see on this route. The town square in Crown Point is one of

the best anywhere, and the Lake County Courthouse has some shops on

the lower level. Plenty of antique stores on the town square as well.

South of there and northeast of Rensselaer (about halfway between 41

and 231 along I-65) is the Fair Oaks Dairy Farm. It's a mega dairy

farm that has tours, a cheese shop, and many other interesting

aspects, including a birthing barn where up to 80 calves a day are

born daily. They boast of 27,000 cows and "4 million glasses of milk

served daily". Just about every part of the milking process is seen.

I've yet to see it, but we're scheduling a group tour there later in

September. Everyone I've talked to who's been there recommend it.

More info here: http://www.fairoaksdairyadventure.com

Also, there was a "Route 66 Diner" in a strip mall in West Lafayette

on US 52. I don't have the exact address, but it was on the westbound

side of 52 on the western edge of WL. They had a lot of various 66

related memorabilia and entrees. Worth the stop, but the fact it's in

a strip mall loses a little bit on me. If it's not there, the XXX

Family Restaurant would be the place to eat. They're not in a strip

mall, but shouldn't they be? ;-) In Lafayette, be sure to check out

the restored Standard Oil station, next to the Tippecanoe Library.

Cheers,

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

==================

May 31, 2006 * 2:08 pm

Historic highway enthusiasts Shellee Graham and Jim Ross today announced the

launch of a new web site dedicated to Route 66 and Roadside Culture images.

http://www.route66photographs.com is a collaborative effort containing a wide

array of Route 66 and other roadside culture images. The fundamental purpose of

the site is to satisfy the demand from individuals as well as commercial users

who need images for the hundreds of books, calendars, magazine articles, films,

and other related mediums produced on an annual basis.

Shellee Graham is among the highway's best known photographers and author of the

books "Tales from the Coral Court" and "Return to Route 66." Her work has

appeared in regional, national and international shows, to include venues as

distant as Samara, Russia. For over a decade, her traveling Route 66 Photo

Exhibition has circulated all over the United States and is booked well into the

future. In 2005, she became the 8th recipient of the John Steinbeck Award for

historic preservation.

Jim Ross is author of the book Oklahoma Route 66 and publisher of the Route 66

Map Series. In 2001, he was inducted into the Oklahoma Route 66 Hall of Fame,

and later that same year became the 4th recipient of the John Steinbeck Award

for historic preservation. He is considered an authority on the history of U.S.

66 and is a Co-founder of American Road magazine. His photos have appeared in

such publications as AAA's Home & Away, "Route 66 Remembered," "Drive-In

Deluxe," and "Route 66: The Mother Road (75th Anniversary Edition)."

Route66photographs.com contains images in fifteen different categories, from

*Roadside Attractions* and *Vanished Icons* to *Bizarre & Unusual.* At launch,

the site contained approximately 300 photos, however new images will be uploaded

on a continual basis.

Ross and Graham's personal pledge is to offer reasonable rates and to provide

friendly, efficient service. For additional information or to schedule

interviews, please contact Jim or Shellee at: Jim@route66photographs.com or

Not on a direct post to the group. Yahoo does not support combined

text and image posts. If you attempt to include images they are

removed. There is a photo section in the newsgroup and I used to use

that for my pictures. But the space is a bit small, so when I found

out about Webshots, I put them there.

The other alternative is to have a website of your own, like Pat and

Jennifer Bremer and Denny Gibson have, where you *can* combine image

and text.
