Alex - Midway between Austin and San Antonio is New Braunfels, about 35

minutes drive south from Austin. We have been going there for their

Wurstfest, 10 days between the 1st and 2nd weekends in Nov. Every other

German community celebrates Octoberfest, but in Texas it tends to be too

hot in October, so... Wurstfest in Nov. Great German bands from all

over, great German food (wurst, etc.) and did I mention Bier!!! New

Braunfels is a beautiful community, without Wurstfest...with it, it is

enchanting. Check it out at www.wurstfest.com We will be flying in to

San Antonio Nov. 3rd from Los Angeles to meet with good friends from

Minnesota, Houston, Florida, Minneapolis & St Paul. Good luck finding

us...we'll be the ones with pitchers of beer in hand as we move for

Oompah band to Alpen Horn blasts...along with thousands.

Skip had his scheduled surgery last Thursday at the Mayo Clinic.

His left lung was removed along with apparently some lymph nodes

around the aorta. The lymph nodes were tested and did not appear to

have any cancer in them--that was good. However, he is still in

intensive care as he is having problems with his heart beating too

fast and blood pressure being too low. Apparently this is not too

uncommon when a lung is removed--heart is used to pumping blood to

two lungs, and is having some trouble accommodating to the fact that

there is only one lung now. They have given Skip some more blood,

and the mood now is definitely more upbeat. Karla said that she

thought they wanted to be honest about the fact that what was going

on was critical, but was not necessarily out of the ordinary.

Skip (and Karla) still desperately needs the kind thoughts, hopes

and prayers of all his Route 66 friends everywhere. As one of

Skip's friends said, we should have an unlimited supply of these to

send Skip and Karla's way. So lets all take an extra few minutes to

think of Skip.

Hello Adam,

I, too, have been researching this. The early

alignment of the National Old Trails highway differs

greatly in some stretches to what became Route 66. And

not only in California. Many changes occurred after

the post-1926 numbering: one was the relocation of the

highway between Daggett and Lavic. I hope to develop a

paper on these early routings someday in the near

future, ha, ha. Let me know if anyone else out there

is doing the same. Happy Roading.

Sorry, I must have accidentally hit the send button, but to continue,

crossed US 14, US 52, US 24, US 136, and ends by US 150. What is the

road and what state is it in?

Hint, it also marks the western edge of some major urban

sprawl and a trip along it definitely shows the impact of urbanization

on what once was mostly a rural area.

This June, members of Tin Can Tourists will be participating in the 200

Anniversary of the Historic National Road.

We have put together a webpage regarding the caravan.

http://www.tincantourists.com/hnr/

It now includes the schedule, general info, caravan details as we learn

them, participant bios, TCT info and HNR info, interactive routemap, and some

information about the stops. Check it out.

You want to try some fun ramps, try some of the I-55 Exits in NE

Arkansas...they are about 20 feet long and dump you right onto the outer

Speaking of Arkansas, Interstate 40 (particularly the right travel lane,

both east and westbound) is no joy to travel

on, either! ! Washboard ripples will beat one to death! !

Hello, Forest.

I didn't realize you were a member of this e-group. I've been aware of your

planned caravan for awhile and mentioned it here a couple of days ago. I

believe at least one e-group member is planning on meeting up with your

group at the National Road Museum in Zanesville and I hope to connect with

you in Springfield, OH. I'm particularly interested in your journey since I

intend to do a similar thing (sans camper) later in the summer. I haven't

nailed down a date yet but know that it cannot be earlier than July.

I also have an interest in the TCT since my great-grandparents were inducted

into the earlier version of the group in 1920. This was while "vacationing"

in Florida (from Ohio) in a Model T. I certainly appreciate what you and the

TCT are about but don't own a camper and, unlike my ancestors, don't have a

tin can attached to my radiator. I'm more likely to have some chilled adult

beverages in a cooler in the back. More of an "aluminum can tourist" you

might say.

Best of luck & hope to see you in Springfield,

When crossing Arkansas your best bet, for a nice ride, tho slower, is to use

U S 64 to Conway, I-40 between there and North Little Rock, and U S 70 into

Left Memphis!!!!!

See my travel report @ http://www.freewebs.com/yankeetraveller/index.htm -

click on Arkasas Ramble, Parts 1 and 2 (working on 2 today) at the top of the

page.

PS - I-55 ain't a whole of a lot better than I-40 - Most times I travel that

way to Memphis I've been known to cut over to Dyersburg on I-155 and take 51

south.

Hey Russell,

I can sure empathise about the Mountain Cedar..its one of my many adversaries,

allergy wise. The allergy shots and Nasarel knock it down a bit (not much

sneezing, but I still get headaches, maliase, etc). Of course, here in Texas

there's also ragweed, tree pollen, grass pollen, wildflowers, etc etc.

RE: Tucker...I got the opportunity to ride in a Tucker at the first RocknRods

event in Pontiac Illinois last summer! We went about 10 miles down old

66...what a thrill.

There should be TWO Tuckers at this years event in Bloomington (

http://www.rocknrodson66.com/ ) . Special plans are underway which I can't

announce yet! Also, just yesterday I started a painting of the Tucker in front

of the Odell Station on Route 66.

I'm all "tuckered out" now, so I'll close. (groan).

hey - remember me? I need to apologize again for

being semi-incommunicado the last month and a half.

While on vacation I caught the flu - there's nothing

like driving through the mountains on a two lane at

night in the rain with a headache, fever and severe

congestions. After being laid up in bed for week I

was diagnosed with a subsequent sinus infection

just in time to go to Austin, TX for work so I could

I was previously unaware of, see:

I am now on my second antibiotic regimen and am

slowly getting better.

A bumper sticker in my work cubicle proclaims, "My other

brochure that their photo collection contains over 40,000 pictures. I've only

seen

a smidgen of the collection, and if they don't have what you're looking for,

maybe no one does.

Fun ramps? How about 55mph to 5mph with a right hand turn and a

cross-street, with no deceleration / exit lane? Anyone here try

driving the Arroyo Seco Parkway (Route 66, Pasadena Freeway, CA-110)?

I traveled the national road from Cumberland to Vandalia a few years

ago. Its a great trip and if you look carefully, there are still some

terrific remnants and historic markers on the road. Unless things have

recently changed, you might be disappointed in Cumberland. At least I

was. There is hardly any reference to the beginning of the road in

town and the beginning is not even marked. The city has promoted its

canal area but not the road. Luckily the beginning of the road is near

Fort Cumberland and Washington's headquarters so a visit is not a

waste of time. I hope on your visit this year, the city has begun to

recognize the important of their place in the history of the great

road and you will find it a memorable visit.

If any of you out there have any old photos of Route 66 for California

dating from pre Route 66 to the 60’s please let me know. We are looking for

photos to use in a project; if we use yours you will get credit under the

photos. Or if you know of someone or place that does have any let me know

that too.

We will return the originals to you once we make a copy. This is a very

worthwhile project that will benefit Route 66 so your assistance is needed.

I look forward to hearing from those of you that have some photos.

Jim,

Are you mainly looking for personal snapshots and/or advertising photos?

What about postcards or real-photo postcards?

Guest Mike Ward

Scott,

You already know my feelings about the Arroyo Seco Parkway. For others, it is

without a doubt the coolest freeway/parkway/etc. going. Besides the 55 to 5

exits there are also the 5 to 55 entrances, with a VERY short merge lane. If

you just don't get on or off except at either end you're all right.

This is all in addition to being a very beautiful piece of roadway.

Mike

I've never driven the Arroyo Seco Parkway myself but I have traveled it with

Mike at the wheel and Scott navigating. Of course, this was shortly after

they had collaborated on an "O" turn in front of the Fair Oaks Pharmacy so I

knew I was in good hands.

I-40, I-55 or either end can make your life exciting!!!! Been there, done

that. Imagine what it might have been like if they succeeded in building the

(proposed) tunnel for I-40 under Overton Park in Memphis. Oh boy.

Alex, my wife and I travelled I-40 from Texarkana eastward toward Memphis

driving

a 24 ft Ryder rental truck and pulling the largest car carrier they had on

that $%^&

road! Liked to beat us to death!
