My much better half and I have been "looking for" another road trip

and I'm thinking that adding old motel photos to my album would be

cool. I had lodging at some very similar or worse places for

several years during my travels for corporate America. These garden

spots included burgs with really first-class motels like:

AR - Pocahontas, Leachville, Piggott

MS - Booneville

TN - Union City, McKenzie, Dyer, Humboldt, Selmer, Savannah, etc.

MO - Houston, Cabool, Mountain Grove, Fredericktown, Piedmont, etc.

IN - Vincennes

Not much going on here during the next few weeks. Might be a good

time.....Bliss

I almost saw it this week. The Smith Kramer web site shows this as "April

17, 2005 through June 5, 2005" and my Outlook had reminded me of that. The

17th was Sunday and it was a gorgeous day. I didn't leave home with the

exhibit a firm destination but I meandered, consciously or sub-consciously,

in that direction. At some point, it did become a target and I reached

Springfield & the museum around 2:00 in the afternoon. With absolutely no

cars in the parking lot, I knew something was wrong even before I read

"Closed Sunday" on sign at the door. I'll probably get back up in a couple

of weeks.

The hours are posted on the web site (closed Sun & Mon) and I have only

myself to blame. I'll be glad to send a photo or two once I get there while

the exhibit is open.

This is still a work in progress. I have been working on this as I have had

the time. These are the pictures that Charlene and I took on our trip last

July. The temperature in the shade was 110 degree's. This is a trip I think

everyone should take at some time. It makes for a great side trip. I

believe we were the oldest people camping at that time. The Boy Scouts from

New Jersey hiked in the day before we left and they could do nothing but

complain until we told them that if two 60 year old's could make it, they

had better enjoy their youth while they could.

Would we do it again? You bet. Only when it is cooler, like leaving at 4:00

am as most people who we meet had done.

Don't forget Walnut Ridge/Hoxie ;)

Most of our old motels in NW Arkansas are gone. I think there are maybe

three or four left. Most were demolished so we could have a fast food row :(

Frank Zappa did a song in the seventies called the Mudshark where he

described a hotel called the Edgewater Inn. You could rent a fishing

pole and fish out the window there. Why you'd want to I don't know,

but Zappa could imagine, in his own, uh, unique way.

I couldn't stop laughing when I went to Seattle in 1983 and saw a

brochure for that place. I never did get there, though. Someday,

maybe after I hit the lottery. . .

At least I could have taken a photo of it for this guy's blog.

Fishing out the window/backdoor?

There's a place in Inverness, CA (on the Pt Reyes/Tomales Bay

Penninsula north of San Francisco in Marin County)... the motel is

on the *Bay* side of the road--and it seems like there's only about

10 feet of *beach* before you get to the bay shallows. During high

tide, it seems like the water would be at the back door of the motel

rooms. The bedroom has a picture window that looks out at the road

that passes by... and the small kitchenette and the bathroom have

windows that look out on Tomales Bay. Interesting place.

On Wednesday, April 20, the entire 250+ mile length of US 31 in

Indiana will be renamed "Reggie Miller Highway" for a day, in honor

of long time Indiana Pacer basketball great Reggie Miller. Wednesday

night is Miller's last regular season home game before he retires at

the end of the season after 18 years in the NBA, all with Indiana.

Fortunately for Miller, Indianapolis had a highway that he shared his

number with.

New owner to preserve Amboy

By KELLY DONOVAN/Staff Writer

AMBOY -- A tiny Route 66 town that hasn't changed in appearance since

the 1960s has a new owner with plans to preserve it.

The owner of the Juan Pollo restaurant chain, Albert Okura, recently

closed escrow on the town of Amboy, which is about halfway between

Barstow and Needles.

"The charm of the town is it's the way it was in the sixties," Okura

said. "If you put some '60s cars around, you'd think you're in the

sixties. Nothing's changed."

Putting in a Juan Pollo restaurant, or anything else that would be out

of place with the historic look of the town, isn't part of Okura's

plan, he said.

"My plans will never change the character (of Amboy)," he said.

Currently, the population of the town is zero, and the only thing open

there is a small U.S. Post Office.

Frances Mintz, who works at the Post Office in Amboy, said she enjoys

working there, and described it as a quiet place.

"It's an adorable little town," Mintz said. "From what I understand,

Mr. Okura is going to get it back the way it was, and that's great.

It's got a lot of charm."

Many of the people who stop through Amboy are foreign tourists, she said.

"A lady from Amsterdam was devastated when she found out Amboy was

closed," Mintz said. "She said they would come there every year and

stay at the (motel) cottages."

Okura said he plans to reopen the town's gas station, diner and motel.

Getting everything open again might take a while because he needs to

get water and electricity restored to the site, and the county is

requiring him to rewire the electrical system.

For the time being, Okura said he's trying to meet the needs of

travelers. He has put portable toilets in the town, and he said his

No. 1 priority is to reopen the real restrooms.

Then, he said he'll reopen the gas station and start selling snacks

and drinks.

The reopening of the cafe and the motel, which has 20 rooms and six

bungalows, will come later.

"We need to first get the basic necessities in," he said.

While a Juan Pollo in Amboy isn't in Okura's plans, he said he is

planning to bring one of his restaurants to Barstow. There are

currently 30 restaurants in the chain.

I recall 50 yrs easily--so I have heard of such hiways as The Dixie

route. Clearly it went South! Could you tell me the `route and a

little history.. Thanks! Thanks to my love of Steinbeck's "-Grapes of

I just heard from our good friend Ray Kath, who lives on Route 66 in Essex,

California, that Jon Williams just left his place and is now headed towards

Goffs. Ray said that Jon is a nice kid and he enjoyed his visit. Ray stocked

Jon up with Gatorade and sent him on his way. This will be a long day for Jon,

as he started out this morning at 6 AM in Cadiz. Mileage from Cadiz to Essex

is about 24 miles and it's about 16 miles from Essex to Goffs. The

temperature in Essex at noon today was 98 degrees.

If any of you along the route want to help Jon out or if you just want to

follow his progress his website is http://www.runwillyrun.com/

Jeff,

Good place to start is Bob Droz's great web site @

http://www.us-highways.com/dixiehwy.htm

That's the main one. Going to www.google.com and

typing in Dixie Highway will give a lot of other

sites, most of which are local.

I am not sure about what is on Interstate Route 15 but probably not

much. However once you get to Barstow you should by all means get

off of the interstate and get on US 66. From there to San

Bernardino there is much to see including two great route 66 Musuems

(one in Barstow, and one in Victorville, The Bottle Tree Ranch in

Helendale, an in San Bernardino the Worlds first MacDonalds and a

Wig Wam motel just west in Rialto. Also stop at Barstow Station in

Barstow. The MacDonalds there is in old Railroad cars - Pretty Cool.

You have to get off of the Interstate to see stuff.

Have a great trip,

anything on route 15 other than vast stretches of road? I've looked

at it on the map and there are a few towns along the way, but in

do? Thanks so much for any help you can give me. ;o)

Last July a strong series of tornadoes came through this area of western

Pennsylvania and that took part of the bridge down The bridgfe was

being worked on and reinforced at the time which is probably why the

whole thing didn't collapse. Check out this site for info:

http://www.kinzuabridgeonline.com/

If you go to news articles on this site and look back, you will find

articles and photos of the collapse.

Hey Folks,

Here are the particulars for the 2004 Lincoln Highway

Conference in Chester, WV (late registrations are fine).

Even if you are not going to attend the conference please

feel free to stop by the bookroom Wed. or Fri. night for

displays, and for souvenirs and memorabilia for sale.

ypsi-slim

Lincoln Highway Association

12th Annual Conference

Chester, West Virginia

June 16 - 19, 2004

"The Last Lincoln Highway State"

Come to Chester, West Virginia, in

2004 and experience the fun of visiting

three states traversed by the Lincoln

Highway, America’s first coast-to-coast

highway!

West Virginia was the last Lincoln

Highway state, added in 1927 when a

new road was completed between Pittsburgh

and Chester. That road - Route 30 - replaced

the original 1913 Lincoln Highway along the

Ohio River.

The East Tour will travel both routes plus

feature a dinner cruise on Pittsburgh’s three

rivers.

The West Tour will visit two Ohio sites

related to LHA officers: Frank Seiberling’s

beautiful mansion and Henry Osterman’s

grave.

Chester also features the famous Teapot

and three original concrete road markers

(posted in 1928) within three blocks.

Why not also allow an extra day to

tour West Virginia, Ohio, or Pennsylvania?

We can provide directions to drive west

across Ohio, or east to Dunkle’s Gulf, the

Bedford Coffee Pot, and the sites of the

Flight 93 crash and the Ship Hotel.

Wednesday, June 16

Noon - Registration begins.

1:00 p.m. - Board of Directors meeting.

6:00 p.m. - Cash bar in the Courtyard

(weather permitting).

6:30 p.m. - Welcome Dinner and

Reception in the Courtyard.

Thursday, June 17

8:00 a.m. - Buses board for West Virginia

and tour west to Ohio. In Chester, see

three 1928 posts, Ohio River bridge

overlook, and the famous Teapot. Tour

East Liverpool, brick streets, and the

Osterman grave.

We will have lunch, a talk, and a tour of

Frank Seiberling’s fabulous home, Stan

Hywet Hall, in Akron.

Then it’s on to the Spread Eagle Tavern

for a special dinner, and return to the

Mountaineer in the evening along the

Lincoln Highway.

Friday, June 18

8:30 a.m. - Our day of seminars and

meetings begins, with breaks for

refreshments and the renowned Book

Room. Presentations tentatively include

an update on the National Park Service

study, diaries from the Lincoln Highway,

the Pennsylvania Heritage Corridor, some

Lincoln Highway Bridges, and a review of

the Cross-Country Tour.

Following lunch, we will have our Annual

Meeting and a preview of next year’s

conference in Ely, Nevada.

6:00 p.m. - The Awards Banquet is always

special, beginning with a cash bar at 6, then

the banquet at 6:30.

Saturday, June 19

8:00 a.m. - Buses board for tour east to

Pennsylvania. We travel the original 1913

route north of the Ohio River to Pittsburgh.

We cross old stone bridges, pass the

Conway Railroad Yard, Old Economy Village

in Ambridge, and stop at Glenfield to see a

wonderful old yellow brick section.

After lunch at Penn Brewery (great German

food), we drive through Pittsburgh, passing

a Lincoln statue in Wilkinsburg (where the

Lincoln meets the William Penn Highway)

on our way to the 1932 Westinghouse

Bridge over Turtle Creek Valley.

Our day concludes with a dinner cruise on

the Gateway Clipper as we explore Pittsburgh’s

three rivers and the Lincoln Highway routes

along them, returning to Chester at night over

the “new” 1927 highway.

Accommodations

Chester is in the northern tip of West Virginia

on Route 30, across the Ohio River from

East Liverpool, Ohio. It is 37 miles west of

Pittsburgh, Pa., and 54 miles east of Canton,

Ohio.

The conference will be in the Grande Hotel

at the Mountaineer Race Track & Gaming

Resort, WV Rt. 2, seven miles south of

Chester. This new hotel combines 1920s

style with modern elegance, several

restaurants, a spa, and fitness center.

Hi--I'm a newcomer wondering if there is a list or index to the

magazine of roads which have been featured?

I wondered that myself. The storyboards at the park didn't say anything and

neither did a simple brochure I picked up in Wellsboro. I saw brochures

advertising a train ride to the bridge but have no idea how current they

were.

BTW, I'm home now and all four days of the drive are posted.
