I've seen more members on the new Forum today! People are posting and

I just received my e-mail digests from the Forum for the various

topics of the day.

Remember, if anyone is having trouble logging in to the new Forum at

americanroadmagazine.com or if you have questions, Pat, Jennifer or I

are available to assist you.

Hope to see you on the Forum!

There are several in the St. Louis area...and Dino makes his presence known

(I think there is one down by St. Clair and there is one at a Station just

off of I-44 on Big Bend)...I noticed a few Pure stations on my trek to

Wisconsin....speaking of where are they now, are there many Gulf stations

left? They used to be all over the country but the last time I remember

seeing one was out in Pennsylvania--I know there are some out east, but

anyplace else? Tsingtao, Kip

John Margolies wrote a book called "Pump and Circumstance" which is all

about the evolution of the gas station...one example I can think of of

distinct (not necessarily attractive) architecture would be the Shell

stations of the late 60's and early 70's which were brick and had a dual

roofline look...Tsingtao, Kip

Heh:) Back in the 60's, there was a big neon billboard in Chattanooga

at the south end of Broad Street right up against the toe of Lookout

Mountain. I was down that way late one evening and, sure enough, the

"C" had burned out:) I nearly laughed myself sick:) Especially since

it was so close to a notoriously rowdy nightclub named the Carousel

Room. It was a local joke to call it the Carousal Room:)

A Sinclair station in Tulsa recently had a car show/festival to celebrate its

birthday, and they were handing out little inflatable dinosaurs to the kids.

Dino is alive and well in Tulsa!

Here's a message from Brian McKay's wife, Marie. Brian had a layover in

North Fork, California, he's due back on the road today. North Fork is on Road

222 about 45 miles north of Fresno and 30 miles south of Yosemite. If you've

met Brian, you know that he is an optimistic fellow, and if anyone can

successfully complete this marvelous 'adventure,' it's him!

I am new to American Road. Looks like an interesting group. Does

anyone in the group know how I can contact Bob Claar? Bob was a

contributor to the Mockturtle and I thought he may have moved here.

Bob and I served on the same ship in 1967.

Many years ago they had two sizes of inflatable dinosaurs - some about a foot

long, and some about four feet long. You could buy them at many of the stores -

not sure if they're still available or not. I lived with a dinosaur nut for many

years and we had five of the large ones pulling Santa's sleigh on our roof -

even made the AP one year.

True, I suppose any arch proximate to a highway or named trail could

fall under the category of a welcome arch. If that definition holds

true, then the great stone arch at the north entrance of Yellowstone

National Park, and along the Yellowstone Trail, is the grandest of

them of all.

I suspect most welcome arches were built coincidental to any actual

highway promotion. In other words, how many arches actually had the

name of the highway positioned across their span? I know of one, the

Route 66 welcome arch at the New Mexico - Arizona state line. Above

the words Welcome to New Mexico sat the proud Route 66 shield.

It doesn't surprise that businesses are folding along the old route. They will

Karen Manning and Sharon McCauley, owners of La Cita Mexican

Restaurant, a Route 66 icon for the past nine years, said the

restaurant will serve its last meal Oct. 31. Manning said she is sad

the business is closing.

"We are not closing due to lack of customers," said Manning. "We

just have some business problems that we are not able to overcome at

this time." La Cita's owners do not own the restaurant building.

Steve Whittington, of Clovis, is the building's owner. He could not

be reached for comment. Manning said she was grateful to the many

customers who came through La Cita's doors in search of Mexican

fare. "I want to thank all of our customers. The locals have been so

true to us," she said. "Everybody prayed for me when I was sick and

that's something I will always remember."

Manning did not want to comment as to the exact nature of the

problems the business was facing. "All I can say is that we made the

decision to close in the past week," she said. "It's up in the air

as to what we will do next, but we are closing the business." Kim

Vaughn, a Lowe's Grocery Store employee, said she frequently

directed tourists to La Cita.

"People would come in the store and ask me where they could get a

good Mexican meal," said Vaughn. "I always sent them to La Cita."

Virginia Wright, director of the Tucumcari/Quay County Chamber of

Commerce, said she was shocked at the news of La Cita's closing. "La

Cita is an icon and a tradition on Route 66," said Wright. "I've

eaten there frequently and always enjoyed their food and

hospitality." Wright said it may be time for local businesses and

organizations to come together and discuss ways to prevent business

closings in Tucumcari. "I'm not sure how we are going to turn this

trend around," said Wright. "Perhaps the chamber of commerce and the

economic development board can get together to keep these small

businesses going. We do need to open greater communication between

businesses and organizations that can offer assistance, so we can

keep these businesses open.

Two other restaurants, Dean's and Megan's, have closed recently.

Local resident Stephanie Vargas said it is a disturbing trend. "It

seems like every time we get a new business in town, then two or

three businesses close down," said Vargas. "I used to go to La Cita

every week. I really liked their food and they were really

friendly."

Manning seemed proud of the food served at La Cita.

"We were a popular place to eat," said Manning. "In addition to

Mexican food, we served steaks, shrimp, hamburgers and sandwiches.

We had a really good business for these nine years."

I wonder if high gas prices are a contributing factor. Gets kinda expensive to

the business is closing.

Did y'all not read the article? Its says they are NOT closing because of

lack of customers:

It would be my supposition that the lease is up for renewal and building

owner jacked up the rent to the point that they cannot remain profitable,

even with a full house.

Greg, I would say high gas prices have a huge factor in traveling some old

highways and routes just for fun of it or taking vacation. You have to have more

commerce and not just tourism or locals along route to save a lot of these

businesses.

It doesn't surprise that businesses are folding along the old route. They will

P.S.

I've been asked to be guest lecturer at Webster University in December. It's

a required course that is a Freshman Seminar. Catch this class title:

"America: Through the Eyes of Bruce Springsteen." Naturally, I'll be showing

slides from Route 66 -- including the Cadillac Ranch, west of Amarillo.

(Did you know that the upbeat "Cadillac Ranch"

song is really about *death*?)

I don't know a lot about the class but the professor told me they will be

(obviously) listening to music, watching films like the "Grapes of Wratch."

I'm going to sit on some of the classes just to get a feel for it.

Kind of cool, isn't it?

It would be my supposition that the lease is up for renewal and building

owner jacked up the rent to the point that they cannot remain profitable,

even with a full house.

I know that gas prices are a substantial portion of any driving trip but it

doesn't have to be a "trip-stopper". If you take a vehicle that gets 20 MPG

(and most get better than that) on a 3000 mile trip then you'll use 150 gallons

of gas. At $1.50 a gallon that's $225; at $2.00 a gallon that's $300. When you

consider what we all usually end up spending on a 3000 mile trip an additional

$75 isn't all that much. A few less margaritas over the course of a trip would

make the difference.

Of course, if you could get margaritas for $2.00 a gallon, it would be a

different story.

But that is a good point: Compared to lodging, food, T-shirts, &

"refreshments". fuel may be one of the smaller costs of an outing.
