I find myself disappointed that there's no pic of Onysko's

van in that article..... Anyone have one, or another GIS

mapping vehicle for that matter? Or is that kinda like

making the reporter of the news (or data, in this case)

part of the news?

Hi, A couple of suggestions here. Hubbell Trading Post, Ganado,

Window Rock, Navajo Headquarters, and Zuni. These are east of where you will

be but very interesting to visit. If you can't do it now save them for another

time.......Jane

American Road magazine will soon be unveiling its dynamic new website,

with great new content and features including:

- Calendar of Events (where you can submit events electronically!)

- Road News (where you can submit news items electronically!)

- A new and improved Hitching Post (Online store)

- American Road podcasts - broadcasts that celebrate travel across the

historic two-lane highways of North America.

- the AMERICAN ROAD TRIP SWEEPSTAKES—offering you a chance to win

great prizes!

- a Reader Service card offering readers one quick and easy way to

request information from AMERICAN ROAD advertisers.

Also, we would like to announce that the forum will have a new home at

the American Road website as well. We will make the transition an easy

and gradual one for all members. When the new forum is ready, we will

announce it here and provide a link and complete instructions for

joining. The current Yahoo group will remain up for a short time

(probably a couple of weeks), allowing all members time to join the

new forum. After that, we will shut down the ability to post at the

Yahoo Groups' site, but will keep all posts available in the archives

for a specific period of time. That period of time will be as long

as it takes for the posts to be transferred to an "archive" section

of the new forum. Once all old posts have been transferred, the Yahoo

Groups' site will be disabled.

As to the new forum, we believe members will enjoy the new features.

There's lots of technical features that we think will be helpful -

like the ability to go back and edit or delete your own posts. The

addition of "avatars" to your profile, as well as putting smilies and

emoticons in posts are neat too!

As far as content and navigation, that will be one of the best changes

we'll have. We will have various separate subforums so we can have

relevant, topical discussions...for example: the category Roads,

Bridges & Tunnels will have subforums for discussing U.S. Highways

(further broken out by different highways); Road Trails; State /

County Roads, etc. The category Roadside Businesses would have

separate subforums for discussion on Motels, Diners and other roadside

businesses, etc....this is a short list of the categories and

subforums, but hopefully that gets the idea across.

This is where we would like your input...to suggest a subforum

category, please send a note to either Pat or myself at:

route66-owner@yahoogroups.com

Sad to say, as I have joined forums, I have stopped following as I miss too many

threads,

and it takes too long to search. I hope that does not happen here, but belonging

to over

25 email groups, I find that I prefer getting emails and do not want to log onto

25

different sites to see what is happening several times a day. I hope this works,

but I

believe it will become a different membership group over time.

This e-group will continue for awhile and is a great place to bring up

questions or problems about the forum. But it will eventually become "read

right at home in the forum. PJ, Jan & Charlie, Rita, Willie, Chris, and Dave

how about repeating your messages here as posts to the forum? It will help

get things rolling and help with the transition. If you have problems or

answer and so will everybody else who isn't quite sure just what all this

Hello Dave,

Hopefully the problem of following Long threads will get eliminated -

as you can subscribe (and get e-mail notification) to the sub-forum

topics that interest you. Also, there is an ability to view posts

since your last visit (and not have to search through everything to

figure out where you left off).

Additionally, there are some really nice features, including the

ability to send e-postcards to friends and family of pictures that you

might post in your picture gallery. Additionally, you will be able to

attach pictures to individual posts.

We wanted to enhance the experience of our group members, not detract.

We worked with Pat and Jennifer to make sure that we went with a forum

that actually had better characteristics than Yahoo offers--otherwise,

we agree that there would be no point in moving the group.

We are always seeking to improve and enhance the experience of our

readers and our group members and appreciate your feedback and input.

Best,

Yes, this is so sad to hear they are closing. We actually heard about

it from Tony Craig, a classic highway artist when he was on the road a

I agree that e-groups and forums are two different animals and I'm sure

you're right that not all members will make the transition and some new

ones will appear as a direct result of the group's tighter integration

with the magazine site. I'm not one to say "Try it, you'll like it"

because I recognize that you just might not. Plus, even suggesting that

you try it isn't necessary since you've obviously already decided to do

just that and encountered problems. That's my real concern.

I really hope that the Bremers have addressed your password issue or,

if they haven't, will do so quickly. It could be a wrong address, a

well intentioned spam filter, or something else entirely. Whatever the

cause, it's the sort of "washout" that can really hamper this caravan

to the forum. I have confidence that Jennifer & Pat will sort through

things as quick as they can but it may take a little time.

1971. Gordon

raced onto the NASCAR scene in 1997 by winning the Winston Cup season points

Agree with Dave on this one.

When you belong to so many groups and are passionate

about many of them, it is very tough. I will still be

diligent with Am Road Forum, but

like the email group stuff as I read most items, no matter

what it's limitations are.

Just make sure you put it on your radar is what I am going

to do with

this new change. Also, no passwords and request yesterday

and today.

Odd. Otherwise would post to forum. I can't get on.

This e-group will continue for awhile and is a great place

to bring up

questions or problems about the forum. But it will

eventually become "read

here would be

right at home in the forum. PJ, Jan & Charlie, Rita, Willie,

how about repeating your messages here as posts to the

get things rolling and help with the transition. If you have

sure you'll get an

what all this

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems,

66 Willy,

Thanks for the kind words on the Auto History. I just have to remember to change

my

signature every day when I first go online which is sometimes difficult without

coffee.

Contact Becky directly as per her email. She helped me get on line, and I have

taken the

time to set up my profile and post a few photos to start. I will see if I can

keep

checking regularly, or if I fall out here too. This forum does seem more

intuitive than

some I have joined in the past...

Apparently the "tiny URL" that I had used expired or something. Very

odd. Anyway, I've deleted that URL and replaced it with the original,

long URL.

The link for the new American Road forum is on

www.americanroadmagazine.com, not www.mockturtlepress.com,

right, Becky? Kind of like my employer's websites....one is

a sales page, and another is a portal for users/members.

Multiple domains are not always a surfer's best

Hi Matt,

Yes, the link to the new forum is on americanroadmagazine.com.

We will be updating the old mockturtlepress.com site in the near future.

The new site has yet to be submitted to the search engines -- the IS

team is scheduled to do that next week.

Let me know if you need any assitance.

Thanks,

Becky

I'll ask Jennifer and Pat to post a tutorial this evening on how to

subscribe to the various subforums so e-mails come directly to your

box. I'll ask them to post it in the Sub-forum titled "Technical Help"

on the new Forum. Hopefully that will help everyone.
