In the words of Jim Carey, "Somebody stop me..."!

I've been a busy boy. I took a Hwy 80 trip to East Texas and

Louisiana in June and as a result, have finally (that pesky thing

called 'work' keeps getting in the way) added a Dallas/Ft. Worth Hwy

80 webpage and a new Louisiana Hwy 80 page to my bygonebyways.com

web. A new Eastern Texas page should appear within the next two

weeks...

Furthermore, we took a long weekend to Durango-Silverton-Ouray,

Colorado over the 4th of July. Though our primary interest was a

vacation, you know I couldn't help but take some happy snaps of good

roadie stuff for everyone!

Direct links are here, and I hope you enjoy the information Highway

80 trip!

I remember that Vicksburg bridge - oh yeah do I

remember that old Vicksburg bridge. Wide enough - if

it were Harley's going in opposite directions!!!!

Anything wider than a couple mules was scarey. Sort

of like the bridges up in Cairo, IL. Them old bridge

builders must have been working on a budget!!!!

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems,

but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

Saw this today....another great club coming to Route 66.

Let's give them our roadie hospitality.

Volvo club to stop in Duke City

Albuquerque's Best Western Rio Grande Inn will be a stopover for 100

Volvos during the Dutch car club's drive from New York City to Los

Angeles.

The Dutch Volvo 44 Car Club, which left New York City on Aug. 3,

will stay in Albuquerque for one night before ending their three

week cross country trek in Los Angeles. The group added Albuquerque

as a stopover because of the city's location on the legendary Route

66, on which they will travel from Chicago to Los Angeles.

The 100 Volvos will stop in the Duke City on Aug. 15, where they

will showcase their cars at the Best Western Rio Grande Inn near Old

Town.

Director of Sales Anthony Valentin at the Best Western Rio Grande

Inn said the hotel was "thrilled" to have the group select its hotel

as a destination. The trip is sponsored by Volvo Holland and

organized by Travel Home Holland and Rocky Mountain Holiday Tours of

Colorado. Volvo Holland shipped the Volvos to the U.S. at the

beginning of August. The cars will be shipped back to Holland after

the group finishes the tour.

Ken and Dave have it correct on the many things to do here.

My daughter just got back from the Terry Bison Ranch and

loved it. With physical limitations, Dave has outlined a bunch of

great places that have the ability to also handle any of those

physical limitations. Anheuser Busch has a brewery on the way

to Cheyenne, north of Fort Collins too. Very accommodating.

Cheyenne is not just about the rodeo either,

there is so much to do during Frontier days...great arts, crafts,

(not necessarily all Western motif either), music, food, Lincoln

Highway trekking, history museums, shopping is Western, great

walking in downtown Cheyenne. I am huge outdoors guy, so I spend

half the day at Sierra Trading Post outlet store. Yes, they even

have stuff for ladies. North of Cheyenne about an hour or so, is

Guernsey Reservoir and Park. If water and boating is your thing, sail

or power, this is a great lake to rent or observe it on.

Cheyenne has a lot of Chain Motels, if you kind of want to be on

the outskirts of town, Little America is very unique and with all

the amenities there, it is another place to hang your hat.

I haven't found a great mom and pop there yet to enjoy, but there

probably is one. Tell the other couple, don't be afraid to get

dirty, as it can be windy in Cheyenne and just south of there too.

Let me know if I can help out when here,

So I am not the only one to find those old iron bridges across the

Mississippi scary? When I was driving down The Great River Road every

crossing of Old Muddy was an adventure. I particularly remember that double

decker bridge at Niota, Ill, with that spooky old prison at Fort Madison

waiting for you on the Iowa bank, and I was totally freaked trying to work

out which roller coaster to take at Cairo, Ill, I'm sure I crossed three

different bridges till I got the right one!

I drove The GRR just after 9/11 when all the locks and Overlooks were closed

and restricted due to security concerns. Is that still the case, or have

these re-opened to the public?

one last question about the GRR. The Quad Cities fascinated me (yes, I'm

still not sure why as well!) as I couldn't work out if there were four

different city centres or what, and four years on I'm still trying to work

out where there is life after 9.00PM. Somebody told me that there was an

area of bars etc down by the river, but here I am in Scotland still

searching for the damned place! I thought the John Deere Pavilion cool mind

you, I still think of the Mississippi every time I see a green & yellow

agricultural appliance! "That came from Moline, Ill," I tell my long

suffering wife who seems to have her enthusiasm for this geographical gem

well under control!

Hi all.

I am new to the group. My family and I are going to be doing the

Ohio River Scenic Byway trip and was wondering if anyone knew of good

campgrounds (tenting) or any attractions along the way that we should

not miss. We will be starting from East Liverpool and ending at St

Louis. Any feedback will be appreciated.

Should be a nice story on US 34 and US highway travel in general for

those of you in the Chicago area. Check out the Naperville Sun's

Tuesday issue (8/9).

I'm hoping to see something in the online edition -

Walter-

Indeed there are 4 different cities that make up the "Quad Cities"-

Bettendorf and Davenport, Iowa sit North of the river, while Moline

and Rock Island are situated south.

If someone were to get really technical, it would be called Cinco

Cities-East Moline, IL is part of that group.

Any of you oldtimers remember the old bridge between

Memphis and West Memphis?? I remember crossing it MANY

times--old route 70. The auto part of the bridge was

an 'after-thought' hung on the outside of the train

bridge, one lane, wood planks, small rail on the

outside. The most beautiful bridge ever built was the

"new" bridge just for cars. I was just in Arkansas and

just had to go to see what was left of it. Believe it

or not--the 'outriggers' are still attached to the

train bridge, easily seen from the interstate 55

bridge, as it is now called. On the Ark. side you can

still see the approach. I parked and walked back

almost to the edge of the old train bridge. I can

still remember how it shook if you were half way

across, hanging on the outside of the main bridge,

nothing under you but muddy water, and a train

crossed with you. The whole thing shook!! Made the

"Vicksburg" bridge seem like a 'piece of cake'. Ah

yes, the 'good old days'!!!! john, ipilot66

Hello Group!

Just wanted to add this little info for those who wanted info for Oregon.

My wife & I were just watching a program on a local Wisconsin Public Television

channel from Madison WI.

It had a program about lighthouses. We didn't know this until now

but,.........Some of the lighthouses out there in Oregon & California are

actually Bed & Breakfast stop overs where the lighthouse keepers actually

stayed. The last lighthouse they mentioned was the one near Florence OR. They

were watching whales & ships pass by out on the water. These places are kept up

very, very nicely!

I found this to be rather amusing & thought I'd share this with you all.

John you rekindled an old forgotten memory of mine, Forgotten until now that is!

I remember crossing a bridge that sounds almost like the one that you are

talking about.

It was in St.Louis Mo. Somewhere north of the Arch.

In the fall of 1986 I crossed over from the Illinois side to St. Louis in a

straight truck loaded with furniture for delivery for area stores.

I tell ya what! I had one hand on the door lever & watched for places to jump to

if anything were to give way.

I can't believe that I paid to cross that ole thing! I thought that I was

taking a short cut..........Whew! Some short cut.

I can't remember what was shaking more, Me or the Bridge!

The farther out over the water I had gotten, The more she (the bridge) shook! I

look back now & just can't help but laugh!

Great Stories Everyone!

I meant independent as in not even related to the chain. So this IS the

chain, eh? Subway sure puts franchises in interesting places; they tend to

find old drive-ins and diners that are past their prime, though that one

looks well-tended.

I dunno?

Thought they were all franchises.

I'll get more details next time by there.

Actually go in for lunch and maybe pictures from the inside?

Curious what they did with the two cars "joined at the hip".

May be some clues as to whether it was something else besides Subway in the

past.

Stay tuned.

Folks, this lunch place is right on old Route 66--Foothill Blvd--in Upland, Ca.

The reason I am posting this information is it is another Route 66 establishment

who is going out of their way to assist the survivors of hurricane Katrina.

Here is a copy of the flyer I picked up when I stopped by for lunch yesterday.

The owners were still gone when I inquired about them.

There were a number of photos posted that were taken as they were preparing to

depart--looks like they had a couple of trucks full of stuff.

Help Us Help, Mississippi.

Route 66 Subs is joining Southern California's local business together in an

effort to help Pascagoula and Biloxi, Mississippi. Although the Red Cross is

actively securing monetary donations, money given today will not be seen by

those in need for days or even weeks. People in these towns are dying everyday

because of the lack of food and clean water. We here at Route 66 Subs realized

if we get enough food, water and clothing together this weekend we can have it

driven to Mississippi on Sunday.

By Monday, Labor Day, a day when most of us are relaxing and taking the time to

play, we at Route 66 Subs will be arriving to deliver food, clothing and

toiletries to the many needy people of Mississippi.

Please join us, Route 66 Subs, along with many local businesses to help

Mississippi.

We are seeking donations of non perishable foods, water, toiletries, diapers,

formula, clothing and shoes.

Does anyone know any history, details, etc. about the Muffler Man statue

"Handless Jacques" on Rte. 163 in Marblehead, OH. All I know is that he is

privately owned, but the Marblehead Visitor's Bureau offered no help. I

would possibly like to use some information about him in my Master's thesis,

but am hitting dead ends. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The current issue of Texas Highways (November 2004) has an article that makes

Alex,

I am looking for information on our favorite Arch at the Mo/Ark border...I

have been in touch with the Arkansas Highway Dept and have gotten

information on when it was placed on the National Register...if you have any

information or stories about the Arch, please let me know...I was there a

couple of weekends ago, and the cracks don't look like they have gotten any

bigger, and the guy I talked to at the Highway Dept said there are no plans

to remove it at this time (there was some though about removing it because

of its low height, requiring Trucks to go around it).Tsingtao, Kip

That might have helped but I had a good drive anyway. I know better, but I

tend to think of the Dixie as US-25. I should do some more Dixie Highway

research when I next visit the area.

Old US. 41 between Atlanta and Chatanooga is the Dixie Highway. Stop in

the visitor's

center in Marietta and you can get a driving guide for the Dixie Highway

following this

route. Sorry I didn't mention it earlier.

Chris, I went to www.google.com and typed in "Ghost Road" and the used

the advanced feature to search within those results and typed in "New

Jersey" - there were too many results for me to look at - there seems

to be a lot os ghost roads in New Jersey!
