According to www.route6tour.com, it was US-6 at 3652 miles but that was cut

to 3227 miles in 1965 so US-20 has moved into the lead with 3345 miles.

Someone is asking what was the longest road in the US in the past, and

now?

Anyone know? In the past - I'm thinking the Lincoln Highway.

Now? ...maybe US 6 or 20 or 30?

Whataya think?

The tricky part about defining the longest (Numbered) road in the US is the

details. US 6 was a shoo-in before the truncation, US 20 is pretty long, but

it's not continuous.

That reduction was in efficiencies in routing over the years. Compare the

length of highways in 1927 -

http://www.us-highways.com/1927us.htm

to US highways at the peak in 1956

Hi Bob,

Happy New Year!

There's really no motels of that description directly in the downtown

area. Only the skyrise hotels there. Have no personal experience

recommendations of any Mom and Pop places because I've never actually

stayed at any of them here in OKC. ( Like the Carlisle Motel on NW39 )

There are a number of good priced chain motels just a hop skip and a

jump away from the Cox Center either east along I-40 near Tinker

A.F.B. in Del City/Midwest City or west on I-40 at Meridan Ave. exit.

Have you checked out: <http://www.roomsavers.com>

BTW - What day do you plan to arrive into OKC? Will you be passing

thru Lawton, OK. along I-44 ?

God Bless.

The only chain I ever use is Motel 6, and as I recall, there are quite a few

in OK.

The other chains are all wildly overpriced. That's why I always look for mom

and pops. Just eyeball it before you go in. If there's peeling paint, high

grass or rough looking characters hanging around, pass it by.

Jim, I had a similar trip on the Talimena Scenic Byway a couple of months

ago. Ron McCoy and I drove it after exploring Robber's Cave, and from the

moment we reached the altitude of the byway itself, such heavy fog befell us

that

we saw absolutely *nothing* beyond the hood of the car and perhaps 10 feet of

the double yellow line ahead of us. The fog was so dense that we couldn't

even see the signs for the scenic turnoffs until we were essentially past them.

I'll look forward to seeing Shellee's photos. I didn't even bother to take

any. When we got down into Mena we decided to stay over and try again the next

day, but the following day it was equally as foggy, so we gave up and drove

home. I can't wait to try again some day under better conditions. From what

I could tell, it reminded me of the Blue Ridge Parkway, one of my favorite

scenic drives.

Greetings All,

As Shellee mentioned in her post, old US 71 in northwest Arkansas is a fun

drive, and Mr. McClanahan gets credit for inspiring the trip with his excellent

article. We met some interesting people, and their pets (including the owner of

the round barn pictured in the article). If you like antique shopping, however,

I don't recommend this drive in the winter, as most everything was closed. From

Arkansas, we meandered into southeastern Oklahoma for a visit to Robber's Cave

State Park, and later drove the Talimena Scenic Byway along Winding Stair

Mountain, in spite of the dense fog. Of course, Miss Graham had me constantly

pulling off onto the overlooks for photos, even though visibility was about 30

feet. I can't wait to see those images! The overlooks did have cool names, like

Sugarloaf Vista. We drove over 20 miles without encountering one other vehicle.

Ron, you are right about Depew. It is one of those hidden jewels that is slowly

dying. The original roadway looped through town, as you described, but was

bypassed in 1928. It's been a struggle for survival ever since. Hopefully your

interesting commentary will inspire roadies to check it out when in Oklahoma.

And as we all know, routes change over time for a legion of reasons,

so you may want to travel the ORIGINAL route 66, for example.

Route 66 isn't on any of my maps, possibly because it's not a

government road any more.

We now have the first hotel set up for the Thunder cruise in 05.

I have blocked 200 rooms at the Radisson in San Bernardino for June

5th-6th, 2005.

We will also be using their Grand Ballroom for dinner the first

night.

I'm inviting everyone here to come to the hotel and set up either

tables with Route 66 items for sale, or displays-basically whatever

you want.

This will be a good opportunity for the California association to

become involved at the start.

If you need more info, contact me.

Well folks, let the FESTIVITIES begin! While it may only be creepin up on

Groundhog Day, Motor Tour Time is just around the corner....so start marking

your September Calendars: ITS TIME TO SAY "SHOW ME MISSOURI!" (Route 66 that is)

September 9-11: The Route 66 Association of Missouri's 15th Annual Motor Tour

("Festival 66!") Commences in Springfield, MO and ends at the Red Cedar Inn in

Pacific, MO. Tour registration starts at 4:00 p.m. Friday (9/9) at the Rail

Haven Motel in Springfield. On Saturday, (9/10) there will be a Poker Run to

Cuba, MO, and several festivals to take in along the way. Dinner Saturday night

at the Fairgrounds in Cuba. On Sunday (9/12) tour Bob's Gasoline Alley and the

Crawford County Historical Society and Museum, and view the murals in downtown

Cuba. The Motor Tour ends with a lunch at the Red Cedar Inn (lunch will be

served at 12:30 p.m. sharp). There will also be activities in and around

Pacific. An excellent chance to see the "Show Me" State with your fellow 66ers!

Howdy from Tulsa, Oklahoma!

I just want to say that I just joined the group and that I will do my best to

participate here as much as possible. I have driven my own car from sea level,

on the Gulf coast in Texas, to the highest paved road in the USA, Mount Evans,

Colorado. I have also been all the way up to International Falls, MN, too, as

well as the Pacific Ocean.

I have two Route 66 groups, one for those whose parents took them on the Mother

Road when they were children and the other for those who are fans of the Road

ant the TV series, "Route 66.". We travelled on the Old Historical US Route 66

from Tulsa to Los Angeles and back in the 1940s and the 1950s. And I have been

on it, or the Interstates which have replaced it from the Beach at Santa Monica,

California all the way to Saint Louis, Missouri and across the Mississppi River

into Ilinois so that I could go up to a place where a college roomie lived north

of ST Louie.

A number of people create Route 66 groups without realizing that there are quite

a few of them on Yahoo. I am one of those who did that, too.

Still gettin' my kicks on Route 66!

Welcome aboard Joe,

Those of us who traveled the "Mother Road" (I

did it in 1953 with a buddy - from central

Illinois to CA) have got to be getting scarce.

LOL

Someday maybe I'll give it a shot and try

driving (what's left of) it again someday - but I

have to admit that in 2001 I drove from Maine to

Montana, alone, and from Montana to Seattle with

a good friend. Then did the whole thing in

reverse - and it damn near killed me!!!!! LOL

Getting old is pigeon poop.

Barstow Desert Dispatch Tuesday, April 13, 2004

Historic Route 66 landmark burglarized

By IAN MORRISON/Staff Writer

BARSTOW -- The Bagdad Cafe had an unexpected visitor on Friday when someone

burglarized the famous Route 66 landmark.

An unknown person smashed through a front window of the cafe, removed a set

of wrought-iron protective bars and took $207 from a cash register between 7:45

p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Friday night, Bagdad Cafe owner Andrea Pruett said.

"It's a historic window," she said. "It's going to be hard to replace it."

The Bagdad Cafe gained fame following the release of the 1988 film "Bagdad

Cafe," starring Jack Palance and Marianne Sagebrecht.

The property was designated last year a "site worth seeing" along Route 66 as

part of Hampton Hotels' Save a Landmark program. It even commemorates its

part of film history with such fare as the "Jack Palance Burger."

Pruett said the burglar did little damage other than breaking the window and

damaging a new cash register.

"It was a small robbery," she said.

She nailed a board over the window, left the scene at midnight and opened the

cafe again at 7 a.m. the next morning, she said.

"It takes more than that," she said. " Business is still good."

This is the third time that the cafe has been burglarized since she took it

over in 1995, Pruett said. The last time, local kids broke into the store and

stole a couple of beers, she said. They were caught and she made them mop the

floor of the cafe for two weeks.

"That's not bad for a little place out here in the middle of the desert," she

said.

As of now, Pruett said she does not know when the window will be replaced.

But she is going to put in an extremely noisy, "loudmouth" alarm system, she

said.

Kip:

In your last post you asked about the topic of the thread. It

concerned the walking tour I am conducting in Chicago at the start of

the Illinois Route 66 Association Motor Tour. I was tying in to the

fact that it will be more than a "66" tour--many more US highways

went through or started at Jackson and Michigan in Chicago than just

66--Highways 12, 20, 32, 34, and 41 also did to my knowledge, as well

as the Dixie Highway. Also, Illinois State Bond Issue Routes (the

early numbered state highways) 1, 4, 5, 6, 18, 19, 21 and 42 all

started there.

In the thread, Rob Carnachan mentions US 14 and 54 as well. Rob, I

see 14 on several maps but it always seems to end on Chicago's north

side, near the lake at either Addison or just east of Peterson. If

you have a source showing it running downtown, please share.

Good catch on US 54! I didn't think a US numbered route in the 50s

ever came through Chicago (52 skirts to the south and west), but

there it is right under my nose on maps from 1947-1948!

For more info on this June 6th walking tour, or to just hook up with

How about where 66 crosses herself in Albuquerque?
