Jen,

Thanks for the reminder - I almost forgot about this

one. One of the perks of getting older. LOL

Great program with a lot of interesting things to

see and remember - I remember stopping at the Clam Box

in Ipswich, MA, back in the 1950's!!! Now you know

why I almost forgot to watch this tonight.

Nice to put a face to a name, Brian.

Thanks Alex,

Its one of my favorites because it says so much. The blanding of

America; the corporations driving the little guys out.

Got home, checked mail, saw reminder, turned on TV, watched last half of

show. Included in the driving I did today were a few miles of US 40 so I

hope Brian will forgive me. I did a quick check and it looks like it will be

shown on our local PBS station (WCET) at 9:00 on Wednesday. I get a second

chance.

It's produced by Rick Sebak who also did shows on ice cream,

My wife Sarah and I talk briefly at Kentucky's Wigwam Village about

We just returned from a 5000-mile roadtrip - with 3 kids - visiting

Giant (and Launching Pad restaurant) on Rt 66 in Wilmington, Ill.,

Denver's hot

dog-shaped hot dog stand, etc. What a BIG country, but we're ready to

40 or 50 are excellent choices; if you take 40, make sure you stop in

Rocheport, MO--they have a winery there (Les Bourgeois) which has an

excellent view of the Missouri River...also New Franklin, MO is where the

Santa Fe Trail starts and the Booneslick Trail (which connected the National

Road to the Santa Fe Trail)...Tsingtao, Kip

Hello folks,

Getting close to finishing my factoids for the 2006 calendar. Here's one

fact I'd like to use if I could get a significant month and day. Since this

calendar needs to be completed soon, I need advance dates in advance, if

that makes sense. The Pixar website didn't have anything. I did find a yahoo

message board about the movie "Cars", but just posts from fans. That was the

most I could find so far. Any help is appreciated.

DATE??

-------

Pixar Films, makers of Toy Story and Monsters Inc., release the high-octane

adventure comedy, "Cars" about a collection of classic

automobiles-turned-'toons revving things up on historic Route 66. Paul

Newman, George Carlin and Cheech Marin are in the cast.

(I could ask Michael, but wondered if anyone else had clues about the film.)

Thank you.

I just returned from a 4-day road trip I'm calling my "I'm As Corny As Kansas

In August" trip, since the idea was to visit as many corny, kitschy roadside

attractions in the state of Kansas as possible, while traveling the

interstates as little as possible. I did my homework in advance, but was

careful not

to overplan, since I wanted to be spontaneous about starting and stopping

points each day. I had a ball, and I've put up a website for those who would

like

to read my journal and see some pictures. (The very first picture doesn't

load, but everything else on all four pages seems to be doing just fine).

Just received Volume 2 of American Road and have thoroughly enjoyed

as much as I've read. However, page 16, "Rocinante," paragraph 1

appears to include an incorrect statement. It says that the pickup

was outiftted with a "respectable V6 engine." I don't recall GM

using (or even creating) the V6 until the mid seventies and only

remember 2 engine options in 1960-61 for either cars or trucks. One

was the in-line Blue Flame 6 cylinder favored by most pickup buyers

or the 283 c.i. V8 that was dropped into most Impalas. Did GM

actually build a special V6 for this truck?

Thanks,

Bliss

Hi Shellee,

I am sure that asking Michael is your best bet to the inside track on

that one! The Internet Movie Database didn't have it (just the year).

I attended one of his talks in Tulsa. I thought he said late

2005...October comes to mind, but being a Pixar film, I think

generally a holiday release makes more sense. Really can't wait for

this movie to come out!!!

Hi all, Pat and I are heading to Atlanta this Saturday, and I'm

interested in finding out a good route to take. Bearing in mind that

we will be leaving early in the morning, and must check into our

hotel by 7:00 PM (it's an extended stay hotel and the office closes

early). By Interstate only, the trip is approximately 535 miles, or

just over 8 hours (65 mph, no stops). So, taking a back road the

whole way, averaging 45 or so is not an option due to our time

constraints. However, I am planning on leaving early (between 6:30 –

7:00 AM), giving us 4 additional hours; to further enhance our

progress and allow us to travel a US route, we will take the

Interstate at least to Louisville, but more than likely, through

Kentucky and into Tennessee. From there, I'd hope we can take some

stretches of US Highway.

So, can anyone recommend a nice scenic route between the Tennessee

border (off I-65) and Atlanta?

Once we are there, we have two days to do some travel, sightseeing

and photographing. I have some ideas lined up, but I'm always

interested in more. What roadside attractions, oddities, neon signs,

diners, motels, etc., etc., etc. can anyone recommend? I have a

route planned for one day (but it's at home!) and one place I

definitely want to get to is Juliette, Georgia. It was the little

railroad town which was used in the filming of the movie "Fried Green

Tomatoes." One building used in the film now houses a cafe called The

Whistle Stop Cafe (as it was in the movie), and I'm going to take a

lot of pictures – it's one of my daughter's favorite movies.

Any recommendations would be appreciated!

It says the release date is November 4, 2005.

A number of other sites gave a date of November 2005, but no specific day of the

Laurel,

Great pictures and story. I just want to tell you that you were in a part

of the state that is known as "God's Country". Many of these locations are

on the DVD titled "Kansas City to Kanorado - An uncommon view from

I-70". Since all of the sites are located off of the Interstate. It says

that to see the real beauty, you must venture beyond the margins of the

yellow stripes and orange cones of I-70. This is a must see video.

Greetings Fellow Road Warriors!

The time for the last Norwegian Route 66 Tour of 2004 is just around

the corner. Once again, the mighty Trond Moberg will be bringing

approximately 40 riders from Norway along Route 66 from Chicago to

Los Angeles, with a day's jaunt sidebar trip to Laughlin, NV.

I have included below, the tour's itinerary of our nightly stops

lodging dates and locations. All are invitied to meet up with us at

any location. Possibly even stay the night. I encourage all, if

schedules permit, to join us for some 66 poolside socializing,

swimming, a cold brewski, dinner, and/or any other "after a day's

ride" activities.

This would be a great time to meet Trond if you haven't already, or

to do any interviews about his frequent travels along 66 and also get

some thoughts from the fellow Norwegian Road Warriors crew members

about their Route 66 tour and their visit here to America.

Sorry...... that last posting "sent" too early. As I was telling Denny.....

I've read all your trip logs and enjoyed them thoroughly, which is why I was

eager to try my hand at it, too. Now, I hope to continue the tradition in a

new and different state soon. I'm researching the possibilities now.

Thanks for inspiring me, Denny.

Did you know that "Rocinante" was the name of the old horse that Don Quixote

A most excellent trip and a most entertaining travelblog. I spend some

fairly long days in the saddle but if 300 miles a day starts looking like a

necessity, I get nervous. You averaged nearly 400 per without (as the photos

attest) skimping on the sightseeing. Plus three car washes?!?

Very nice job. Thanks for sharing.

Subject: [AMERICAN_ROAD] Kansas In August

I just returned from a 4-day road trip I'm calling my "I'm As Corny As

Kansas

In August" trip, since the idea was to visit as many corny, kitschy roadside

attractions in the state of Kansas as possible, while traveling the

interstates as little as possible. I did my homework in advance, but was

careful not

to overplan, since I wanted to be spontaneous about starting and stopping

points each day. I had a ball, and I've put up a website for those who

would like

to read my journal and see some pictures. (The very first picture doesn't

load, but everything else on all four pages seems to be doing just fine).

Hey all,

I'm back with some Lincoln Highway updates.

First thing - the Lincoln Highway Association is

considering a plan to encourage members or

other individuals to donate concrete LH markers

back to the Association so they can be publicly

re-erected in a protected area on or near the

highway. This would include a large tax

deduction for the donation, and the LHA

responsibility for transportation and restoration.

This is great news even though it's just in the

planning stage. Your comments are welcome.

LHA member, and recent LHA Chester, WV

Conference attendee Mary Ann Michna has an

exhibition of her roadside related paintings and

photographs, Roadside America, through August

29 at the Coffee Break, 663 Wabash Avenue,

Terre Haute, IN. Mary Ann shared some her

photographs at the conference and I was very

impressed!

Greetings Again Fellow Road Warriors,

I have no idea what happened to the September 2 entry which was

inadvertantly omitted from the tour schedule itinerary that I posted

earlier. Obviously a copy and paste snafu.

Here is that day's tour stop for the Norwegian Route 66 Tour:

Thursday - September 2 - Tulsa, OK. - Best Western Trade Winds Hotel -

918-746-8295

3141 East Skelly Drive, Tulsa, OK. 74105

God Bless and Happy Trails.
