Hi Nicole and Roadies, I'm up by Chicago and sure do have cabin fever. I

went through Sedona last April, it was so beautiful, but was unable to stop

for very long. I flew out to Phoenix and came back in a motorhome on 66 to

Aurora, Il. Sure would like to go back.

Am planning a mini trip to Missouri for a 66 meeting next Saturday and

Sunday a Illinois 66 meeting in Springfield. That ought to take the edge off

the cabin fever for a little while.

Just love to do road trips. Barb

At the California/Nevada border on I-15, you can see Bonnie & Clyde's

bullet-riddled car. It's inside the Primm Valley Hotel at Exit 1.

I haven't been to it in years, but Richard's Farm Restaurant in

Casey, Ill., apparently is still going strong. It's a restaurant

housed in a massive old barn (As my dad would say, "Man ... they

could put about 50,000 bales of hay in here"). When I went there many

years ago, it was the home of the one-pound porkchop ... not sure

whether they still have it.

Casey is a town in eastern Illinois off I-70 and U.S. 40. I'm

thinking Richard's still does breakfast, as a Google search found

several farm seminars and other events in the morning there.

Here's the contact info:

We stopped at the National Road Welcome Center in Richmond a couple of years

back..they have some good info and a brochure of a driving tour of the

National Road in Eastern Indiana (just off I-70; Exit 156A)...and while you

are at it, if you are cruisin the road west, keep going through

Illinois...the road is very well marked and there is all sorts of things to

see and do and places to eat! Tsingtao, Kip

We like the Family Restaurant on old 40 in downtown Marshall, IL. Or

there's another good one across the street next to the fire station --

forgot the name of the place. Both have small-town friendliness and

good food....Bliss

Guest drivewdave@aol.com

darn right, let's get back on topic...

the postings have been somewhat lacking in content lately

(not that the following will be any different)

yesterday, Saturday, me and my mom took a drive around

the Tacoma area revisiting old favorite places. There is

a new light rail line downtown nearing completion.

We drove out over the 11th street bridge and she remembered

how during the war she would ride the streetcar out to Todd

shipyards where she was the head file clerk. 11th street

across the tideflats used to be Washington 5 and then 509

but since a limited access bypass was built to the south

it now ends at a large container terminal so we were

unable to drive as far as where the shipyards were.

So we turned south and picked up Pacific Highway

back into Tacoma and followed it all the way out

through South Tacoma to Ponders Corner. Down by

the Tacoma Dome are a few blocks of US 99 bypass

one of the original bridges now bears a bronze plaque

Pacific Highway Bridge Built 1931 Rebuilt 2003.

The sidewalks and balustrades were replaced and

they did a good design job on them in the spirit of

the original which is nice to see instead of the

usual disappearing act.

Speaking of which, we went down to see how the

overlay/new bridge job is coming on the Old Nisqually

segment of old Pacific Highway/US 99 south of Dupont

just north of the Nisqually R. The gravel shoulders

have been paved with AC (asphaltic concrete aka blacktop)

flush with the old pavement so the AC overlay is imminent.

This means more than a mile of original cement conrete

will soon disappear and it will no longer be possible to

have a sense of what it was like for the millions who

drove this road in the past. The only things that changed

out there over the last seven decades were the trees and

the settling of the subgrade. Also steel guard rails were

installed all the way across the old BNSF RR overcrossing

which is being replaced.

Back in the late 60s I drove my VW dune buggy across that

bridge and I suddenly realized how old and historic it was.

By this time bridge design how become very minimal and

functional and elaborate columned balustrades were passe,

at this time the bridge was perhaps 40 years old.

So there you go, one Pacific Highway bridge preserved and

another soon to bite the dust as they say. World famous

Bob's Java Jive on S Tacoma Way is still there, I have

never passed that way without looking at it for 50 years

now, it a giant two story coffeepot, the academics call

that sort of thing figural architecture.

It would be nice to read some road reports, happy motoring, Dave

hey ed et al.....

I would lay decent money on the idea "Arab Person" is some teenager with an

anti-war bent that is trying

however ridiculously, to get his point of view across, and sees this sort of

spamming as easier/more effective than marching in the street. Good for him.

Actually, for whatever reason, I never got the pictures or text or whatnot

he was trying to attach to the 7 or 8 emails, but would have been interested

in seeing them. Lord knows Al Jazeera has had some interesting reports on

their website over the last few days.

Regardless of your (or anyone's) opinion on this war, it is a situation that

needs to be seen from both sides, both in terms of what people at home think

good or bad, and as far as the uncensored images/reports coming back from

the front lines. Be for it or against it as your heart dictates, but at least

use your brain and make decisions for yourself, don't follow some bullshit

spouting political type, whatever end of the spectrum they come from.

From my POV, I'd consider it time better spent reading a dissenting opinion,

than forwarding some trailer-park spiel from Charlie Daniels. This country

was founded on a number of basic freedoms (most of which were rescinded

under the "Patriot Act"), and the right to dissent was a prime mover in all

of them.

And just to keep this on slightly on topic, from what I've read, Highway 80

into Bagdhad is smooth sailing......

OK Pat...feel free to jump in here....

ts

I made a page to show my mom what I did on my day off this week. Thought some of

you might enjoy it as well:

http://springbreak66.com/luna.html

The Illinois Route 66 Association is refurbishing the Luna Cafe sign on Route 66

in

Mitchell, IL. I guess I'm sort of leading the charge on this one, as I'll be

making all the

replacement neon for the sign. The picture on the page above was just the first

step

... but a tough one, since I had to stifle my fear of heights and drag my butt

up there

to take down the old neon.

I got a Stag beer for my efforts. :)

P.S.: Happy Easter!

Hi Emily.....

Too bad you couldn't get a bucket truck to use for this work.....much

easier and safer to work from one of those.....maybe you might be able to

find a local tree service guy to help when you have to go back up. They

might want to help with a local civic project like this just for the free

advertising.

We used a bucket when we repainted the Vernelle's Motel sign,

but this sign is low enough and the logistics of the lot are such

that a ladder is more practical. The height isn't that bad (only

about 15 feet at the highest point) ... just unpleasant if you're

scared of heights, which I happen to be.

It's probably just as well. Getting anybody in Madison County, IL

-- known far and wide as a "judicial hellhole" -- to loan us the use

of a bucket would be a cute trick. The companies that have them

for their own use are scared of getting sued if somebody falls

out, and the companies that rent them charge $200 a day, and

we haven't had much luck trying to talk them into loaning us one

for free, even for something like this.

The ladder isn't so bad. I had a coupla big guys hanging onto it

to keep it from shifting on me, and the sign is VERY sturdy (it's

mounted on a thick pole that's set in a big concrete cylinder), so

it's not going anywhere. I am constantly amazed at how well this

thing was made ... a quality job from top to bottom. Hope I can do

it justice when I start bending the tubes.

I was watching the Tom Hanks movie, "Road To Perdition", the other

night (and I found it to be a really good movie). Here's a trivia

question for you folks (you will have to watch the movie to find the

answer, if you haven't already).

After Tom Hanks wife and son are murdered he and his remaining son

take off for Chicago. What U S highway were they driving on? (There

was a scene where they came to a cross road and on the other side of

the road behind the car was a U S road sign marker).

If no answers within a week, I'll tell you.

Hudsonly,

Alex B
