Walter,

I too would put a vote in for US 40...though since it's just a

couple of miles from me, I'm a little biased. Below are a couple of

info sites on the National Road/US 40 through Indiana. If you decide

to take 40, let us know so we can give you the grand tour.

Brian arrived at the Barstow Route 66 Museum! Visitors thought he was part of

the museum decor with his unique Nash parked directly in front of the door. He

briefed us on his travels and people he'd met. Hi back to Harley! We

thoroughly enjoyed Brian's visit, amusing, thoughtful, easy manner. A volunteer

and he shared a serious "Nash" conversation while others including me were

taking pictures. We have lots of pics! On his way out, he stopped under the

shade of the First Street Bridge by the historic Harvey House and quickly

changed spark plugs. She, the Nash, averages 35 MPH slowing as needed for rough

roads. He cannot believe his 48 days on the road is coming to an end so soon as

he reaches the end of the Route 66 Sunday.

Subject: [AMERICAN_ROAD] 1930 Nash - Brian McKay Plans To Be In Santa Monica

7/11/04

Places, Places, Everyone!

Brian just called (7/10), he's in Barstow and plans to be in Santa Monica

tomorrow afternoon (Sunday 7/11). I think that it's great timing as he'll

come

through LA on it's slowest traffic day and hit Santa Monica during it's

maximum

visitation time.

Great exposure. A press agent's dream!

And, yes Scott, Brian does want to visit Santa Monica Pier!

Brian camped last night (7/9) under a clear desert sky somewhere between

Ludlow and Newberry Springs. He said that the road between Amboy and Ludlow

was

rough and he had to keep his speed (?) down to 5 miles per hour. Brian said

that his original concept of the Mojave Desert, that of a landscape similar to

the pictures he'd seen of the Sahara, was shattered. He was astounded by the

mountains and vegetation that he saw, with each new rise in the road bringing

a

more spectacular sight. The rain that was promised to the area yesterday,

never arrived, but there were a few moments of shade from passing clouds.

Brian

said that several times, the views actually took his breathe away and he had

to stop in order to take it all in. One particular time he came through a

draw and saw two roads stretching far out before him only to disappear in the

mountains on the horizon. One of course was Route 66 and the other may well

have

been an old wagon road. In a touch of whimsy, Brian mentioned that his Great

Great Grandfather left Canada in 1848 for California and was never heard from

again, he wondered if perhaps, long ago his Grandfather may have traveled

some of this same terrain, perhaps even on that other elusive road.

It's interesting that you mention the license plate. I once had a friend who

came to town and rented a car with 666 in the plate. She was a bit devilish.

The amazing thing was that on the subsequent visit a couple years later, she

drew 666 again.

I think that's one in a million!

I always thought 666 was the perfect number for this highway through the

desolate four corners area, Wish I could have "borrowed" one of the signs.

Could have probably traded it for a US 40 shield.

Guest R. Droz

I'd add Will Rogers birthday.

Maybe John Steinbeck's?

Bobby Troup's? (I still think of him as the doctor in EMERGENCY!)

John Ford?

If we open to actors: Martin Milner and George Maharis, Henry Fonda and John

Carradine

Nat King Cole, on his wonderful voice?

Modern legends like Lucille Hamons?

Dare we add the Eagles? Do the Beach Boys make the cut, or just the day 'Lil

old lady from Pasadena' hit the top ten?

It's here, it's beautiful, and it's calling. I'm grabbing a cold and doing

Hey, mine has an Ohio Scenic Byways insert. Is that universal or just for us

PLEASE NOTE: This was rejected (list down?) when originally submitted in the

Greetings All,

Vivian Payne, widow of 1928 Bunion Derby winner Andy Payne, has passed away in

Oklahoma City. Services are today. I had the pleasure of interviewing Mrs. Payne

twice; once with Kathy Anderson in the 90s, and once with Molly Griffis (in

2002) whom I worked with on "The Great American Bunion Derby." Mrs. Payne was a

kind and generous lady, both with her time and in sharing her collection of

Bunion Derby artifacts. She was cared for in recent years by her daughter, Norma

Roupe. Cards may be sent in care of Norma at 4900 Thompson Ave., Oklahoma City,

OK 73105.

James Taylor has repeatedly said he hated the movie and hated acting in

it. I think he was in the throes of heroin addiction and that might

account for his less than lively performance. I have an obscure live

recording of JT from 1972 or so (from the Bitter End Years on Roxbury

Records) in which he describes his role in the movie - they had just

finished shooting the movie. JT mutters, when the movie comes out "I

don't think I'm going to see it." He tells how acting made him give up

all control of his life and placing it in the hands of the director.

Then he tells how he wrote a song about making the movie and launches

into "Riding on a Railroad."

All is well. I've been heads down at the keyboard for several

months now. Besides the AR stories, I've been busy on my Route 40

book. Unfortunately, I've now gone through three publishers in as

many years. All thrree have expressed great interest at first, but

then they bail out citing low sales projections (they don't think

many people will buy a book about Route 40). Sigh... We all know

I am also busy completing several grant applications to help fund

Yup, I did...followed the river toward Bemidji...I went to Law School in St.

Paul, and when I saw the Mississippi--being from South of St. Louis where

the river is close to a mile wide, I freaked out! So tiny up

there...Tsingtao, Kip

...or, if you recall the movie Purple Rain, stop by First Ave/7th Street

Entry, which is a really cool bar; also cruise by the U of M where you find

the only actual walking-only bridge I know of across the Mississippi

(connects the two campuses) other than the Chain of Rocks (cant vouch for

anything north of there)...if I am wrong let me know...by the by, Highway 61

cruises through the Twin Cities en route to the land of Elvis and the Big

Easy, and, of course, the Gateway Arch...Tsingtao, Kip

Talking about seminal influences to the NFL, 41 is a stones throw from

Gainesville, FL (441 goes through there, in fact), such being the home of

the University of Florida and the home of that staple of the sideline and

victory celebrations GATORADE!...will take this moment to tout the Big Red

Machine (meaning the now Arizona Football Cardinals) as the official

football team of Route 66 and in light of their stellar play still thinkin

they may finally make it to LA! Tsingtao, Kip

Sleigh Ride

Just hear those sleigh bells jingle-ing

Ring ting tingle-ing too

Come on, it's ugly weather

For driving together with you

Outside the snow is falling

And people are calling "slowdown"

Come on, it's ugly weather

For driving together with you

Giddy-yap giddy-yap giddy-yap

let's go

Let's look at the snow

We're riding on route 66 wonderland of snow

Giddy-yap giddy-yap giddy-yap it's grand

Just holding your map

We're gliding along with the song

Of a wintry fairy land

Our hands are cold and rosy

And comfy cozy are we

We're cover up the car too

Birds of a feather would be

Let's take the route 66 before us

And sing a chorus or two

Come on, it's ugly weather

For a drive together with you

There's a 66 party at the home of Farmer john

It'll be the perfect ending of a perfect day

We'll be singing the songs we hate to sing without a single stop

At the fireplace while we watch the chestnuts pop

Pop! Pop! Pop!

There's a funny feeling nothing in the world can buy

When they pass around the coffee and the flyers

It'll nearly be like a Hampton Inn by Currier and Ives

These wonderful things are the things

We remember all through our lives

I don't think it's been mentioned in this thread yet, but US 41 from Tampa

southbound through Ft. Myers, Naples and across the Everglades to Miami is the

Tamiami Trail. Those of you who subscribe know the Tamiami was the lead feature

in Vol. 1, No. 1.

Merry Christmas, everybody!

Scott, Thanks for the nice post. I feel that people are missing a great deat

when they shun the urban areas on 66. St. Louis has a lot of history and a lot

to offer. I never miss the big cities when I travel 66. They may be a bit harder

to drive but the hidden rewards are great.....Jane

Carl and Dave Clark --- I'm sorry about all of our losses. From one

end of the road to the other, we all feel the pain.

Dave Clark and I have had this conversation countless times. I've had

it with Jane, too. Kip is feeling it, too, lately, I believe. Folks,

you might not think that urban areas of ANY historic road have

something worth seeing, and if that's the case, I feel bad for you.

Why? Because you are missing so much that is out there.

I've said it once and I know I will say it countless more times, but

there are THIRTY-FOUR National Register of Historic Places landmarks

within ONE block of Route 66 in Los Angeles County alone. I'm sure

that Cook County has similar numbers. I'd assume that St. Louis has

similar numbers. Even OKC, Tulsa, Amarillo, Albuquerque, Santa Fe,

and Flagstaff have wonderful, historically significant structures

throughout their downtowns.

So, when getting your kicks on 66, feeling fine on 99, or having fun

on 101, please, PLEASE make sure that you do it the WHOLE trip!

I concur,

When I rode Rt 66 from Springfield Il to Santa Fe NM

the trip would have been far less memorable without

stopping by Ted Drew's frozen custard in St. Louis,

seening the glorious Art Deco buildings in Tulsa, or

the Frank Lloydd Wright designed skyscraper in Ok

City.

Thank you, Nicole. I've only done one cross-country bike trip, and I'm sure

my (non-cycling) wife thinks that's enough! I went alone, carried four

panniers full of gear (clothing, bike parts, laptop, etc.) and stayed in

motels. I rode over 3,000 miles in about 2-1/2 months. My longest day on

that trip was nearly 110 miles across the Mojave on old 66 from Needles to

Ludlow. My daily reports give details on mileage, average speed and riding

time:

You might want to check out my Frequently Asked Questions page, too:

http://www.targetedsoftware.com/cycling/c2c/faqs.html

Of course, feel free to check out the rest of my site, which includes some

other rides (most notably the Grand Illinois Trail, but also day rides in

several states). My photos tend to have a "roadie" slant, so people here

might like them even more than my cycling friends do.

In 2003, I drove more than I rode, visiting 48 states and covering over

30,000 miles. I'm thinking about putting some photos online, but I haven't

come up with a format yet. I'm currently working on pages about a driving

and bicycling vacation I took in Texas this past spring.
