The American Road Garage Heats Up.

Recommended Posts

It has been hot at the garage. Mobilene introduced what he calls the "island shower" where he takes the radiator fill hose on the pump island and sprays the nearet member of the American Road gang at random. Roadmaven filled the car wash bucket and went after him, but spilled most of it before he got in range.

Bucfan came down to hang out. He’s been on the road and has posted some of his travels at his Redhighways.com site. Take a look. Great stuff. His latest is a trip along US20 between Dubuque and Dyersville, Iowa. We are watching him pretty close because he imagined there were buffalo along the road near Epworth. We’re locking up the tubes of tire patch glue......just as a precaution.

Roadmaven is putting together a group cruise/ trip to the Missouri Route 66 Association 18th Annual Motor Tour. He showed up today in a peek a boo uniform. It happens when you splash battery acid on the uniform and later run it through the wash a couple of times. Wherever the battery acid splashed, the uniform dissolves, leaving holes.

DennyG and Jennifer have been comparing notes on GPS. Do you go with a purpose built unit or connect a bluetooth unit to a PDA? Keep declared that the day he needed more than his Boy Scout compass to find his way would be the day someone started selling water by the bottle in the Coke machine!

Pigdog Daddy, our “academic” attendant came in this morning with an incredible revelation. He is taking photographs at every milepost border to border on US89! He mumbled something about art, truth, and history, then stumbled out with a glazed look in his eyes headed for milepost 345...only 1688 more to go. Take a look at his post under Society Extols The Virtues Of Route 89. Fantastic concept, and what a treasure for the future!

RoadHound came back from the far eastern reaches of California, where few dare to tread, with a report on the stage and early auto roads around Bodie and Mono Lake. You have to see his photos of the Lake. The boss wants to hang one up on the wall, but the gang wants to keep Miss August up at least until Labor Day.

Mr. Hale brought in his 56 Chev. He treats that car like it is his child. We try to keep customers out from under the hoist when its up, even though we have the safety latch in place. He grabs our lube guide and follows us around to be sure we have hit each zirk. The lube gun will throw a stream of gooey grease a good ten feet, and we’d like to concoct a believable “accident” for Mr. Hale. But the boss would kill us.

Mobilene was in the office looking over the new batch of road maps. Seems they have not only updated the roads, they are using a new font. He is a regular font of knowledge! He got a bunch of the gang interested in kerning and bowl size.....now RoadHound is out scanning street signs and billboards for legibility. I never thought it would happen!

Brownwho63, Roadmaven, and Mobilene were all lamenting the news that Steak n Shake is cutting down its hours at some stores. Keep doesn’t care because he can’t recall when any of those guys offered to buy, anyway.

And mentioning Keep the Show on the Road, he discovered the last Phillips 66 Flite-Fuel pump in American, swam a raging river with his camera, and discovered a Ghost Road....or so he claims in his posts this week.

Opps, there goes the bell on the lower island....geees its the boss’s black Buick Century. Grab a towel and start cleaning something....and Join us here at the American Road garage. Post a new thread or reply to one here.

Flash!! As this went to press Roadmaven said that Richard C. Moeur had just pulled up with his sign truck on the outer island! If you don’t know Richard, you should. He is Mr. Road Sign and more. His site www.richardcmoeur.com, is the definitive road sign authority.

Ah, how sweet it is!

In the meantime, down in Memphis, hester_nec is now, officially, a Tennessee Volunteer. He has a TN drivers license, car registration and is registered to vote.

He's been out looking for Elvis - seems like every Elvis fan in the world is in Memphis for a week of commerating his death. Seems, tho, he's been sighted at Graceland, Beale Street, out on old 61, the Memphis Zoo and a few other places - all at the same time.

There is a connection between old highways and Elvis, you know. His last home, Graceland, is on 51, and he was born in Tupelo, which is on old 78. Back in the 50's, traveling between Memphis and Nashville, he would have most likely used U S 70.

Not really. It's so hot down here at the moment the cat won't sit in the window for fear of getting a sunburn. LOL

Supposed to cool off next week - into the 90's.

Safe traveling.

Say, Bro, Tennessee's got nothing on Washington. Frankly I am getting a little envious of my friends on the forum bragging up one festival or another they are attending, so I have prepared a listing of the parties I'm planning to attend right here in Washington State. All in th next three weeks. Eat your hearts out!

Buzzards Breath Chili Cook-Off

Kelper's Parade & Shake Rat Rendezous

Zucchini Festival

Up Your Wind Kite Festival

And that's just a sample. Do a search on Washington Festivals and you will find the full list.

Speaking of festivals:

Anybody that might be headed for TN sometime next spring I might be trying to organize a chapter of TRACK - stand for The Rusty Antique Car Klub.

Down Maine we had a feastival every spring at the heighth of mosquito/black fly season. Had a lot of interesting comptetions - like the engine pull. We lined up a dozen or so 50's Ford 1-½ ton trucks and the idea was for the contestant to disconnect the engines, pull them out of the trucks and the first one to get their engine over the finish line was the winner. By the way, this was for the gals!! Last year Martinique DeChambres was the winner - Marty's a hefty chunck of a gal, goes right 'round 320 - but she can totem them engine blocks.

Another contest we have is the beauty contest - and I'll tell you, chummy, some of them gals are beauties in the skimpy bikini's they have to wear. Idea is all the gals line up on one of the flat bed Fords, under the lights, and the last one that swats a 'skeeter or black fly, is the winner.

We have contests for the guys too - like the wife carryin'. Boys have to take the wife on their backs, carry 'em across a mud hole without fallin' down and make a 150 yard dash to the finish line. "Skinney" Jack Emory won last year - but there were allegations of cheating. Skinny's wife's a lightweight - She only weighs about 245, 250.

Anyway we'll see what develops over time.

Y'all have a great day, now hear.

Alex,

You talk about your hefty women in Maine....we have fish that big out here! Did you see the fish the Indian fisherman was carrying in my movie clip in Fishing the Falls?? Well that was one of the smaller ones.

Last year at the Columbia River Salmon Festival at The Dalles one of the guys hooked into a big one. He was fighting it, and it was going everywhere. Finally, it snagged up. He pulled and pulled but it wouldn’t budge.

Someone in the crowd shouted “Follow that line down under the water. Find out what it's hung up on!!

The guy secured his pole and jumped in. He surfaced about 45 seconds later shouting “Cut the line, cut the line!!!. The fish is in the back seat of a '51 Buick down there”

The crowd shouted back “Pull the fish out, pull him out!!”

He shouted back, “I can’t, he rolled the window up on me!”

One of the reasons I was glad to leave Maine is the 'skeeters up there. Won't say they were big but when Loring AFB was in operation up to Limestone, the boys pumped 8,000 gallons of jet fuel into a skeeter without realizing what it was.

The radar lines up there were always issuing scrambles for fighters - skeeters kept showing up on the radar screens and everybody thought they were Russian Bear bombers. hehehehe

Have a good one.
