GREETINGS FROM THE STAFF AT AMERICAN ROAD!

The AMERICAN ROAD staff would like to extend a hearty welcome to all the new subscribers and AMERICAN ROAD FORUM members! We are thrilled to have more road trip enthusiasts join the growing list of AMERICAN ROAD subscribers and online FORUM Group members.

I apologize for not sending this sooner, but I recently had back surgery (it has slowed me down a bit!). I would like to say thank you to those of you that have sent cards and well wishes. We appreciate them.

Happenings at AMERICAN ROAD magazine:

The Autumn 06 issue was mailed mid-September. A supplemental mailing of this issue is planned at the end of October. The Autumn issue will be perfect for planning Fall color tours. We believe it will help you plan some interesting places to visit on a future road trip!

*Due to the overwhelming response from our subscription promotion through the American Collegiate Marketing Group and the National Education Association, the publisher's copies of the Autumn 06 issue of American Road are sold out. Only a handful of autographed copies remain. Anyone wanting a copy of the Autumn 06 issue of AMERICAN ROAD should go to his or her local newsstand, bookstore, or local Wal-Mart.

DEVIL’S TOWER TURNS 100

Northeast Wyoming

Devils Tower became the first national monument in the US in 1906

Mateo Tepee is the Native American name for Devils Tower National Monument in northeastern Wyoming. A tribal legend has it that a giant bear scratched his way up the volcanic neck while chasing seven young Kiowa girls to the top - thus forming the gouges that adorn the tower’s side.

President Teddy Roosevelt proclaimed the unique rock and immediate area a national monument in September, 1906. The tower was brought to the world’s attention most prominently as a landing platform for extraterrestrials in Steven Speilberg’s classic sci-fi film “Close Encounters of The Third Kind.”

The spectacular rock formation known as Devils Tower and the surrounding countryside, home to a myriad of plant and animal life, attract visitors from around the world (and, according to Speilberg the Universe!). Visitors delight in the beauty of the area and enjoy the activities offered at the monument. American Indians consider the area sacred, a place for prayer and renewal.

FAMILY FUN & LEARNING IN TEXAS

Learning may not be on a vacation agenda, but most kids can't help but walk away a little smarter after visiting any of the children's museums in Texas. Some of the Texas cities that offer children's museums include Austin, Dallas, El Paso, Houston, Lubbock, Midland, San Angelo, San Antonio, Texarkana, and Tyler. Each uses hands-on exhibits to engage children's interest in a variety of subjects.

The Fort Worth Zoo created an eight-acre Texas Wild! area that highlights the abundant, unique, and varied wildlife of Texas. Kids and adults can reach for the stars at the McDonald Observatory in West Texas. Telescopes at the observatory offer a remarkable view of the stars and planets in our solar system. The site for the telescopes was chosen because of the high ratio of cloudless nights and the distance from artificial lights. Star parties are held on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday nights and are open to the public.
