Well, Route 66 is older, but the tern "Mother Road" became official today, April 14, 1939, with the publishing of John Steinbeck's "Grapes of Wrath." The Joad family and others, however, were not so much as travelers as they were "people in flight" from the Dust Bowl and Depression for a better life in Californy.
