Celebrating our two-lane highways of yesteryear…And the joys of driving them today!

Listening to local radio stations offers information about possible

events, etc. that might be interesting to experience, film or

photograph. While SAT radio might be nice, it removes the traveler

from his current environment. My impression that driving on blue

highways was to be in contact with local culture that the Interstate

passes by.

One of the endearing items I have heard over and over on local radio

stations is the remote broadcast. Frequently, it is an opening of a

new business. I have looked them up several times while driving. They

are a wonderful demonstration of rural, small town America.

I have XM in my truck and absolutely love it. Listen to the 50's and

60's stations quite a bit, can also get Fox news, ESPN, Nascar races

when I travel - these are a few among many. COMMERCIAL FREE! Quality

sound.

Thanks for the feedback Frank, Protocol and Ruth. I know

my opinion is just that....an opinion. Some people like XM

and Sirius radio, I'm just not a fan of it. I respect

everyone's opinion. And that's one of the things that make

an email group enjoyable, at least in my mind....people

discussing their opinions.

Well old friend that might be arranged if I take the motor home to

Albuquerque. Our daughter's baby is due the second week in July so my wife

might not come with me which would mean I would fly. If any of my family

goes then the motor home goes too.

There are always folks looking for a room mate to split the costs. So if

there is anyone out there needing to do just that to share in the costs let

us know.

Southwest faces major repair job

If the site at Mount Washington clears funding/permit hurdles, it

will reopen in 2010.

By Christopher Reynolds, Times Staff Writer

http://tinyurl.com/jv4om

Operators of the Southwest Museum say they will close its

collections exhibition areas beginning June 30 to make way for at

least 3 1/2 years of major repairs to the historic but bedraggled

Mount Washington landmark, a move that has alarmed some long-time

volunteers and neighbors who fear a permanent closure could follow.

But officials at the Autry National Center, which operates the

Southwest, say the real message in the move is just the opposite.

Not only will they keep the Southwest's library and gift shop open,

they say, they're aiming to reopen the rehabilitated Southwest

building with exhibition space in 2010, so long as they can raise

enough donor money and get city approvals needed to expand their

Griffith Park site.

Until then, "the collection has got to be moved out, because it's

imperiled where it is," said John Gray, the Autry's chief executive.

Gray declined to speak in depth, citing a mediation agreement with

neighborhood groups and the mayor's office aimed at avoiding

negotiations via the media. But he did say Autry's ambition is to

get City Council approval and break ground on a 100,000-square-foot

expansion in Griffith Park in 2007, to complete that project by

2009, move most of the Southwest Museum's collections to the Autry's

Griffith Park complex, then complete renovation and reopen the

Southwest with exhibition areas the following year.

On Friday night, leaders of the museum, the neighborhood coalition

and a mayor's representative will meet at City Hall. Then, "we'll be

learning things. The devil's in the details," said Nicole Possert,

co-chair of the Friends of the Southwest Museum Coalition and a

board member of the Highland Park Heritage Trust.

Possert acknowledged that the Southwest building's troubles are "a

short-term issue — renovation work that we all knew needed to

happen…. The Autry National Center is being a steward for the

building, doing this work, and they deserve significant credit…. But

we'd be uncomfortable if that work were used as a pretense."

The big question, she said, is whether the Autry will make Griffith

Park additions at the expense of the Mount Washington site. The

issue, Possert said, is "IMBY. We want the [museum] to be in our

backyard."

The Southwest, which was the first museum in Los Angeles, has stood

at its bluff-top site since 1914, its 225,000 Native American and

other artifacts ranked among the most valuable public collections in

North America.

But the museum struggled with tight money and deteriorating

facilities for years. In the year ended May 31, 2003, tax filings

show, the museum raised less than half the money needed to cover its

$1.4 million in costs.

The threat of closure led the Autry organization to step up with a

merger plan that year. Since then, the merger has been a delicate

effort, uniting an old, impoverished institution focused on Native

American culture and a new, wealthy institution founded in 1988 by a

singing screen cowboy, Gene Autry.

Autry officials say they've already spent more than $5 million

shoring up the Southwest. Expenses ahead could reach $15 million,

including replacing the roof and seismic work to reattach the

Southwest's signature tower — which holds most of its artifacts — to

the rest of the building. Only a month ago, Gray said, rain

penetrated building walls and stained a 105-year-old Osage shield of

painted rawhide with eagle claws and feathers.

The Autry aims to raise that Southwest upgrade money, along with

costs of adding to its Griffith Park campus, through a $150-million

capital campaign now in its early "silent stage."

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems,

but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

Strictly from long-term memory, I'll attempt to outline how the

historic sign thing works in Missouri. The Route 66 Association of

Missouri and the Missouri Dept. of Transportation reached an

agreement several years ago soon after our 66 association was formed

whereby the historic signs could be purchased from MoDot in

perpetuity by a county or town. MoDot would install the signs and

replace any that were lost or stolen at no charge to the purchaser.

This has worked fairly well except that replacement of missing signs

is slow at best. MoDot makes a state sweep every few years and

notes the locations where signs need to be replaced. Also, our

association reports any known missing signs to MoDot which is

supposed to speed up the process.

Sign location requirements again were worked out with MoDot and,

basically a sign is required:

1) Upon entry into a county or town

2) Immediately before and after continuing through a major

intersection

3) Immediately before and after making a turn, as an overpass or

leaving an interstate to enter the historic alignment

I'm certain the above is incomplete and you may want to contact our

association president, Tommy Pike, at (417) 865-1318 or via email at

(furyon66) (at) (earthlink.net)

Greetings Folks,

I was alerted by a relative to a (supposedly) new, Route 66-themed cafe in

downtown Houston. Here's the link:

http://www.route66cc.com/

You will notice that their webmaster (or whomever) pretty much butchered the

history section. I have already written them about it, so hopefully corrections

will be made.

In any case, if any of you roadies in that area have been there, how about a

report?

Fayetteville lost almost all the "independents" back in the 80's when they

were replaced by Fast Food Row. Iris Motel, Rest Haven Motel, Fountain

Motel, Circle C Ranch Motel and others were razed so we could have Arby's,

Slim Chicken's, Backyard Burger, McDonald's, Mama Mia's Take & Bake,

Stephanie's Cabaret Club, etc. Only two independednts left here: Hiway Inn

and Chief Motel. BOTH are in really bad condition, though.

We recently lost the old Mountain Inn as well because someone thinks it'd

look better as a Holiday Inn Crown Plaza and condos.

Hi gang:

Now that my presentation and book signing at the Joliet Area

Historical Museum is over (and I think it went well, IMHO), I would

like to let interested American Road eGroup members know how to pick

up a copy of the new book, "Exploring Route 66 in Chicagoland:

Journeys through History on the Mother Road in Cook County,

Illinois."

First of all, the Museum Gift Shop in Joliet is stocking the book, so

you can get one from there if you happen to be going through there.

I'll be sending some to David Knudson this week, so you will be able

to get them via the Fed News Trading Post soon as well. For those

that don't know, David is the Executive Director of the National

Historic Route 66 Federation.

I will be in Albuquerque and selling the book there June 23 and 24.

Now, if any American Raod Group members would like to get one now, I

will be happy to offer free shipping to group members. If you can

use Paypal, e-mail me off-list and let me know the e-mail address

where I can send you a Paypal invoice. You can also send me a check

or money order in the amount of $20.00 to:

David G. Clark

843 W. Adams Street #312

Chicago, IL 60607

If you are mailing a payment, please e-mail me off-list with your

shipping address so I can have the book ready to go when I get your

payment.

Please note that I will be shipping the books at the media mail rate,

which is reliable but slow.

"Exploring Route 66 in Chicagoland: Journeys through History on the

Mother Road in Cook County, Illinois," by David G. Clark. This book

is jammed with the results of new research, giving the best insight

ever as to WHY Route 66 "began" at Jackson and Michigan Avenue, and

WHY it was aligned in its first sixteen miles on Jackson Boulevard,

Adams Street, Ogden Avenue, and Joliet Road. Chapters dedicated to

the history (or "biography") of each of these four streets alternate

with detailed Driving Tours of the same street. The book also

includes a detailed section to help visitors explore Route 66 in

downtown Chicago on foot. Finally, there is a section of recommended

choices for Dining, Tours, Museums, and Shops of interest to

the "roadie" visiting the Windy City and its neighboring cities and

villages along the 66 corridor. The book is lavishly illustrated with

period and contemporary photographs, postcard views, and spotting

maps.

Columbus, Ohio's Motel Row is located on East Main Street (Route 40) in

Whitehall (Whitehall is a separate corporate entity than Columbus).

During their heyday, there were about 20 or 30 motels in a 1.5 mile

stretch of highway. The indy motels were the town's bread and butter.

All was rosy until 1968 when I-70 opened up about two miles south of

Route 40. Overnight, business for this once booming industry dried up.

The chain motels had set up shop at the Interstate off-ramps and the

indies couldn't afford to relocated.

Today, about half of the former indies remain in Whitehall. The once

gleaming motels are now home to prostitutes, drug dealers and others

down on their luck. One Whitehall city official told me that several of

the motels are wired by the local police for sound and video for their

never-ending sting operations. Would you want to stay in a motel that

is permanently wired for drug and prostitution stings?

The city of Whitehall is very conflicted over the motels. On one hand,

they are an eyesore and blight. There is no hope of the old motels

every returning to their former greatness. As much as I admire indies,

I have to agree. No fast food business or retailers (big box or

otherwise) want to set up shop in Whitehall because of the old motels.

On the other hand, the motels bring in some much needed tax revenue for

the city. The city might like to see the motels disappear, but they

can't afford to gamble certain tax revenue for a retail business that

may never come.

If there are any planning students out there, Whitehall's motel row

would make a great case study.

It is interesting to compare the east side (Whitehall) with Columbus'

west side. The west side motels are faring much better. The old motels

there are intermingled with the fast food joints and big box stores. In

an odd way, the fast food joints and big box stores have saved the indy

motels.

A group of shortwave listener friends get together every year in

Reynoldsburg just off 70. We used to stay at the Lenox Inn. It was one of

those older rundown independents you mentioned. About 3 years ago we got

kicked out when the hotel property was sold. Its since been redeveloped

into commercial space. It was never fancy, but it was adequate. The staff

knew us and tolerated our antics. The whole area has changed now. Traffic

has gotten so bad on 256 I try and avoid it as much as possible.

Frank,

Is the 40 Motel still in business? I've been meaning to get to C-bus

to check it out (along with the entire stretch of 40 through there)

since I first saw it on the cover of Karl Raitz' "Guidebook to the

National Road":

http://www.uky.edu/AS/Geography/dept/guidetonationalroad.htm

The story you told of the demise of the motels there sounds the same

as what happened here when I-70 came online in the late 60's. The final

nail in the coffin happened about 10 years ago when all US 40 traffic

was rerouted on the I-465 loop around town. The rest is history.

For those of you who did not already know, I almost did not go to

the Preserving Historic Roads conference in Boston at the end of

April. The original plan was that Julie would go with me, and we

would also use the opportunity to celebrate our 1-year anniversary.

Unfortunately, Julie could not go due to our other traveling that we

had just had to do, but I ended up going anyway. I chose to avoid a

session on Friday evening to sample some "local beverages," but

otherwise was quite pleased to have attended the events this year.

(The next conference will be in 2008 in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and

will be co-hosted by the National Park Service, among others.)

Anyway, the reason that I bring all of this up is because I have

decided to take one thing from the Conference and actually attempt

to put it into practical use. One of the sessions that I attended

was on "Marketing Your Historic Road" or something like that, and

one of the main topics of conversation was blogs. The more that I

thought about it in terms of my personal interests / activities

along Route 66 in Los Angeles County, the more that I realized that

I should start my own blog, too.

The goal on my blog, though, will not necessarily be something

geared toward the 66'er. It will be more geared toward

local "things to do" in the area. Of course, that will tie in to

events / activities / places on 66. My hope is that, once I get

more used to the "blogosphere," that I will be able to better

interact with other bloggers in the area, and provide more knowledge

of 66 to them, thus bringing in yet another set of potential 66

enthusiasts.

For those on this group that might want to see my blog, I currently

only have two entries in it, but feel free to head to

http://route66la.blogspot.com/ and have a look around.

Guest jim conkle

Morning,

Over the next few months, one as soon as next week, some of our state

associations will be holding elections for their boards of directors. The

states are Kansas, Oklahoma and New Mexico, there might be more but these

are the ones I know of. These elections affect all of us as these become the

leaders within the Route 66 Community. If you are a member of these

associations then you know that the leaders set the tone of how your

association is going to function over the next year, if not a longer future.

We urge all of you, members or not, to get involved by voicing your opinions

to these groups. Do so with tact and diplomacy but be honest in your

feelings. We are moving towards a GREAT future for the entire road and the

more we work together the stronger our chances of being successful. Look at

the Texas, Canadians and Missouri associations as examples of what happens

when the right people are responsible and involved. This is not to say that

the other states are not doing a good job but those three are at every major

function and have a stronger voice within the Route 66 Community nationally

and internationally.

So if you know someone or a business in those states send them an e-mail or

give them a call, let them know that their upcoming election is important to

all of us. Recommend someone to run for the boards that you feel will

enhance their image and make them more effective. Or if you are in one of

the states think of running yourself. If you are not a member of your states

association then you need to join. You can not make changes from the outside

but only from within. So being a member is an important part of your

involvement in the road.

I am not telling anyone what to do or how to do it but I am informing you of

what is happening within our beloved road. If you do not agree with me then

say so to this group, as an open discussion will only make things better.

And yes we will never all agree on many things but the one thing we for sure

do agree on is that it takes all of us to make this work. So lend your voice

and get involved in making the road better.

Take care and see you on the road.

Thanks

My wife and I drove up all the way of Lincoln Highway from New York

to San Francisco on last June.

Although we missed several famous landmarks, we could visit and see

many landmarks and attractions.

We also could find a lot of 1928 Concrete Lincoln Highway Markers.

We took thousands of photos. I made slide shows of selection of those

photos and posted on the net. URLs are as follows:
