The answer is Illinois highway 47 as several of you guessed. The

only two states with both 66 and L-H are Illinois and California.

Il 47 is duplexed for short distances of around one to two miles

with US 20, US 6, and US 30. It crosses Rt 66 at Dwight and Lincoln

Highway at Elburn.

US 51 was a good guess and may even be right depending upon the

duplexing of 6, 30, and 20. Also, Il-47 might end at Illinois 10 or

possibly US 151. I've driven the whole route but only to there once

and don't remember for sure which one it was.

This is a very interesting road as it clearly marks the line between

the rapidly growing urban sprawl of Chicago and the old rural part

of Illinois, but it won't be much longer before it is completely

enveloped. You can see the encroaching sudivisions like waves along

the shore. In some places they are way off to the east, and other

times right up to the road and in a few places, even on the west

side. There was a recent newspaper article saying that it will

become like Randall Road, a very congested place now.

One thing I really enjoy looking for when we drive it, are the

unique oval barns. Evidently, some company went through at some

time in the past and had special deals for the farmers. There are

about seven of them between Huntley and Dwight. Is there anyone out

there who can fill me in on these are have seen them as well? Some

are in disrepair, and a few are right by the road. Just north of

Dwight, there is a round one.

This is our preferred way to get around the Chicago congestion as we

live in McHenry County right by the Wisconsin border. We then pick

up 66 at Dwight. I would recommend it to anyone going our way.

Speaking of Il-47, for any of you who are fans of the movie

Groundhog Day starring Bill Murray, starting January 29th with a

pancake breakfast at the Moose Lodge where the Groundhog Dance in

the movie was held (where Bill played the piano and the man auction

was held), and going to February 5th, the city of Woodstock,

Illinois, will be hosting its annual Groundhog Days Festival. It

will include the weather forecast of Groundhog Willie on Feb. 2nd.

February 4th and 5th you can see the movie shown at the theatre

where Bill did his Clint Eastwood impersonation and afterwards

guided walks around the square and town showing film sites. The

last two years, they have been hosted by people involved with the

film. Two years ago, actor Stephen Tobolowshi, who played the

obnoxious Ned, did the honors and last year, it was the site

manager, the man largely responsible for the choice of Woodstock to

make the movie. They provided many tidbits of behind the scenes

information, many of which were hilarious.

Woodstock is located on Illinois 47 and US 14. You can get more

detailed information at

http://www.woodstockilchamber.com/pages/groundhog2006.html

That same weekend, if you continue north on Il-47 and into

Wisconsin, you can go to the 11th Annual Winterfest and National

Snow Sculpting Competition held in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. It is

maybe 30 miles north of Woodstock. It is held in front of the

historic Riviera and fifteen teams will make some of the most

beautiful snow sculptures you'll ever see out of 10-foot blocks of

snow.

You can get more information at http://www.lakegenevawi.com.html

Go to Winterfest on the sidebar.

Speaking of US 34, has anybody heard anything about the proposal to extend

US 34 back into Chicago and naming it after Walter Payton? I think it's a

great idea, extending a US highway and naming it after one of the true

greats and possibly the best running back of all time, the late Sweetness.

I know they cross in Joliet. But one alignment of 66 duplexes on the

Lincoln in Plainfield, Il.

Hey, maybe you could convince an editor at American Road to

do this, Tom....after all, it's a magazine, too. You'd

have my support :-)

Sounds like a great idea. I was a geography major and am a map freak. I'd

love it.

I had forgotten about those fascinating puzzles. Thanks for the memories....!

Bob Harmon

Is anyone besides me (I'm 58) old enough to remember those map puzzles in the

Saturday Evening Post? For the younger folks, the SEP was a weekly magazine,

NOT a newspaper. It's best known as the venue for Norman Rockwell, whose art

decorated many covers of the magazine.

The map puzzles consisted of little circles lifted from road maps. There

would generally be one town name visible and maybe part of another. Plus some

numbered highways and maybe a river or something. You had to figure out what

state

it was in.

Those suckers were HARD.

Going back more years than I can remember, truckers at a diner didn't always

mean a good meal - sometimes it ment "friendly" waitresses (look for little

cabins out back!!). But not always.

Since most of travel these days are on Interstates these are the days of

nationwide chains and a Mickey D on every corner. Some chains appear to be

good - for example I've eaten at a lot of Perkins resturants out thru Pennsy

and Big Bob's in the mid-west. I've found Country Kitchen to be pretty good

most everywhere I've gone.

If you are traveling the two lane, what you find in small towns is usually

pretty good - but again you'll find Mac's and BK's all over the place. For a

local resturant the number of cars in the parking lot at 7am is generally a

pretty good indicator that something good is inside - the locals will lead you

to salvation, so to speak. In the Bible belt that has a whole different

meaning - you can have religion with your sausage gravy, bisquits and grits.

So today it's a lot harder to figure out if a place serves good food or

not. In to many cases the resturant owner could care less, especially on the

interstate. He knows that if you don't like what he's got, there's going to be

thousands of hungry customers pulling up as you leave.

For starters,,,,,,,,,,ask a "local," a gas station cashier, motel clerk,

somebody in a local store. Also, look for a place that have a lot of truckers

in

the parking lot.

They know good food at reasonable prices.

My initial attempt at posting photos can be found in the "Photos"

section and the album is entitled Bliss Blue Highways. These are not

what I would consider to be world-class photos but I had fun taking

them....Bliss

Their upcoming tour sounds very nice. The day they depart Richmond

with a lunch in Milan, Indiana and shut down for the evening in Terre

Haute is going to be a full day. I know someone has made a recon of

the route, that last right hand turn in Milan to get to the old high

school is going to be interesting.

What is the sauce there like? Is it tomato or mustard based?

I lived in KC for 2 years, and I agree that LC's is probably the best BBQ

available. You also can't go wrong with Gates BBQ.

Here are some good places in Arkansas:

-McClard's BBQ in Hot Springs. Probably the most famous BBQ joint in the

state. A favorite of Bill Clinton.

-Smitty's in Conway. Don't get the extra hot sauce (habanero...nuff said)

unless you can handle extremely hot things.

-JoJo's in North Little Rock. It has apparently moved, the last time I went

by there it was closed. I did a web search and found a new address, so

hopefully it's the same good BBQ.

A note on AR BBQ: They tend to put cole slaw on the sandwiches, so be sure

to ask for no slaw if you're like me and don't like slaw. The first few

times I ordered BBQ in KC, I'd ask for no slaw and they would look at me

funny. I guess slaw on sandwiches is an Arkansas thing.

Most of Arkansas' interstates have been rebuilt in the last 5 years or so.

I-30 from Benton to LR is now 6 smooth lanes with a 70 MPH speed limit in

Saline County. Much, much better than it was before.

I noticed that RoadDog created a database of Road Songs, and

recently the lyrics to Convoy were posted; combined with my fun of

creating playlists on my MP3 player for the past 5 or so months, I

thought it would be fun to start a thread about your favorite road

Hi Jennifer,

WOW! What a list. Now where do I buy the CD's? Really I would pay to have

all of your songs on a CD. Of course it is illegal to copy, sell for profit

and/or distribute such a CD but between friends you can download, copy and

charge me shipping.

I look forward to your answer.

Take care and see you on the road.

Subject: [AMERICAN_ROAD] Road Trip Songs - what do you listen to?

I noticed that RoadDog created a database of Road Songs, and

recently the lyrics to Convoy were posted; combined with my fun of

creating playlists on my MP3 player for the past 5 or so months, I

thought it would be fun to start a thread about your favorite road

trippin' music.

I have both Route 66 and general Road Trip playlists.

My playlist, "Road Trip!"

1. Johnny Cash - I've Been Everywhere

2. Willie Nelson - On The Road Again

3. Steppenwolf - Born To Be Wild

4. Lindsey Buckingham - Holiday Road

5. Jerry Reed - East Bound And Down

6. Roger Miller - King of the Road

7. Simon & Garfunkel - America

8. Sammy Hagar - I Can't Drive Fifty-Five

9. Eagles - Take It Easy

10. John Denver - Take Me Home, Country Roads

11. C.W. McCall - Convoy

12. Coasters - Yakety Yak

16. Dion - The Wanderer

17. Junior Brown - Highway Patrol

18. Dave Dudley - Truck Drivin Man

19. Ray Charles - Mess Around

20. Nelson Riddle & His Orchestra - The Theme From Route 66

21. A Side Willie - Old 66

22. Two High String Band - Goodbye California (Hello, Illinois)

23. Ray Anthony - Peter Gunn Theme

24. Randy Garibay, Jr - Sweet Home Chicago

28. Kevin Welch - Willy Rogers Highway

29. Maryann Price - Hoppin' in Joplin

30. Red Dirt Rangers - Arizona State Line

31. Jason Roberts - T-U-L-S-A Straight Ahead

32. Weird Al Yankovic - The Biggest Ball Of Twine In Minnesota

Two of them are less obvious "road trip" songs...I included Yakety-

Yak because it was used in the beginning of "The Great Outdoors"

when John Candy's character and his family were road trippin' to

their vacation destination...and Mess Around because of a classic

scene in another John Candy film, "Planes, Trains and Automobiles"

as he is driving from Chicago to St. Louis...simply hilarious!

My Route 66 playlist (entitled "Get Your Kicks") of course has some

of the same songs listed above:

1. Manhattan Transfer - Get Your Kicks on Route 66

No kidding 13 hours of great music. I could not have even taken the time to

Jennifer,

Here is the list of music that I put together for the CDs that I played at

the Route 66 e-group get-together at the Wigwam in San Bernardino last

September. This was kind of a compilation of music that a number of people

sent me as well as some of my favorites. There are 208 cuts running just a

hair shy of 13 hours. They are obviously not all road songs but they are

ones that people wanted to hear.

Johnny Harris sauce has both ketchup and mustard and lemon.

It's sort of orangy - not real sweet - tangy and lemony. Good

with fries, vegetables, any kind of meat. Only $2 a bottle at the

restaurant.

Your mention of AR barbeque reminded me of Penguin Ed's

in Fayetteville - excellent: http://www.penguineds.com/

I noticed that RoadDog created a database of Road Songs, and

recently the lyrics to Convoy were posted; combined with my fun of

creating playlists on my MP3 player for the past 5 or so months, I

thought it would be fun to start a thread about your favorite road

trippin' music.

I found a cool link with some highway song listings:

I'm curious to hear everyone's favorites, and I will add my songs to

the database too.

Carl:

Just two points to make:

1. Since he's still talking, he must only be half-baked.

2. The furor was not over a cartoon use of Muhammad talking, but a cartoon use

of a likeness of him. So you have not committed a blaspheme yet. Now, if you

should draw a second panel with the door open...

Regards,

Dave Clark

Carl Johnson <clesjohnson@comcast.net> wrote:

T'all,

I got to thinking about the ruckus created by the political cartoons of

Mohammed first published in that obscure Danish newspaper. And then I got to

thinking about Iran's response to those political cartoons (how they asked for

political cartoons about the Holocaust). And then I got to thinking that they

weren't necessarily exclusive ideas.

Of course, one is not supposed to show a depiction of the prophet Mohammed.

And, of course, if Mohammed was a prophet, he would be a prophet for all

mankind.

I'm not a political cartoonist; but I did draw this cartoon on a legal pad.

And--I hope--by so drawing this very simplistic cartoon, I've helped bridge a

gap.

And--I suppose--I should now be running for my life.

But I'll stay put.

Yours,

Carl Johnson

For all of you who have been either intrigued, upset, or bored with

some of the political e-mails and postings recently deseminated

amongst us, I am offering a solution! I have started an eGroup where

Roadies can voice their political opinions with no fear of censorship!

Roadies tend to be opinionated sorts, and political opinions are not

always popular at the main roadie discussion sites.

Thus: ROADIE POLITICS is born! I promise to only delete obvious

spam--all other messages will be left on the site for all to see your

wisdom, or your idiocy! The emperors will be front and center for all

to see and judge if they have no clothes, or are clothed in the robes

of wisdom!

So, if you want to drive home your political point-of-view, drive on

over to the new site for ROADIE politics!

If you would like to join, go to

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/roadie_politics/

Or write me at roadie_politics-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
