Pat,

Should have gone to see "Two-Lane Blacktop" - yes,

it is somewhere below M on the rating scale - LOL -

but it does have some great road shots.

As I've posted on this egroup my daughter and I

tracked down one of the drag strips used in the movie

- the old Lakeland drag strip about 20 miles east of

Memphis, TN. And we got her car on the old track. We

did this after we'd watched the movie on DVD.

For those who havn't read it the story of that

little expedition can be found at

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems,

but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

Brother Harmon suggested, correctly so, that this be reposted for our

"friends" that had what I am sure was a great time in Albuquerque...we have

sent our words to Rep. Benge, and hope that you will too--again, I would say

to those in OK who know their reps and know folks who might be sympathetic

with the cause, contact them...I don't know how much time we are working

with (it doesn't sound like much), but unless the OK legislature knows about

our concern, nothing good will happen...lets do our best, folks, and hope

for the best....Tsingtao Kip

Quinn and I made the trek to Litchfield...had a great time--nice seeing the

Illinois Association contingent, Pat and Jennifer Bremer, John and Lenore

Weiss, and Kris Skinner, who has done a fantaboulous job promoting

Litchfield and assisting the MO Association with their Motor Tour...enroute,

we stopped at the Luna and met Don Hildebrand, the very enthusiastic

co-owner of the Luna who has all sorts of plans about promoting the places

history on Route 66! A guy well worth meeting! We also stopped at the

Mother Road Pottery in Hamel IL, where Andrew Pilla "spins" some very fine

pottery--met his father, Tony, who was a joy to talk to about the place...of

course, had to stop at Rich Henry's...saw Rich and his newest "addition" a

massive Rabbit that Natalie could not get enough of! Kent and Mary Sue

pulled up in their Vette; had some cool moments with them as well! For those

of us who didn't make it to Albuquerque, it was a blast! Tsingtao Kip

Yesterday I went on a tour of the Pennsylvania House in Springfield, OH. The

old National Road inn is in the midst of some big renovations but a

reopening is planned for Oct. 14. It's a far cry from a scenic road trip

but, for anyone interested, some photos are posted at

Emily and I stayed there in September, and it's terrific. As other

posters have noted, it's about 100 bucks a night. But I've stayed in

similarly-priced hotels that aren't nearly as nice, pleasant and

uniquely decored. La Posada has its own self-guided walking tour,

which gives you an indication how terrific it is.

In the end, I thought that 100 dollars we spent was a bargain, and

plan to go back there again.

Also, La Posada has an attached restaurant called The Turquoise Room

that I recommend highly. Again, it's a bit pricey (although not so

much for breakfast). But the quality of the cuisine is exquisite.

And I didn't even know that there really might be an I-66. I thought

it was just an urban or road myth. Shows you what I don't know.

There was a very good article in the Louisville Courier-Journal today

titled "I-66: A road to growth or path to destruction."

I made it to Chicago on Saturday via the Metra train ($5 roundtrip

on the weekends).

I thought that if I got there an hour before the 11:30 opening, I

might not have too long of a line. Wrong!! It was

already to the end of the block. I took lots of camcorder and still

shots of the exterior and that great sign.

I saw that the bar was open and no line so went in and got a seat at

the bar. Ordered my last Berghoff beer and had a great corned beef

sandwich piled high. There was a line in there waiting to go into

the restaurant and I was told these people had already made

reservations a month ago.

I was told by a bartender that the bar was to be closed for awhile,

but would be reopened without much change. The worst news was that

he was pretty sure the sign was a goner. That was REALLY bad news.

I was hoping it would be left in place.

The place was packed and many people talked about their memories.

It was kind of like a wake. Well, at least I got one last visit.

There were very few souvenirs remaining and a long line even to get

those. Walking through the restaurant was difficult. There were

tables of twenty or more and every possible sitting place occupied.

The line was still to the end of the block when I left at noon.

For those of you and myself, who like to pull off the road and

attempt, and I emphasize attempt, to sink a few holes of miniature

golf, we owe a debt of gratitude to Robert R. Taylor who died Feb. 14

in Johnson City, NY, at age 89.

In the 1940s, he and his brother Joseph, took the new craze of

miniature golf to the level it enjoys it today. Before them, courses

were very simple, often just two by fours with outdoor carpet and a

hole, and perhaps an angle. They introduced the elaborate obstacles

and layouts like windmills and lighthouses that are tour de force

today.

This became a business the whole family participated in.

Search Robert R. Taylor. Most are the same obituary, but if you see

one from jengajam.com check it out.

Hello Trails Road,

I like your e-mail handle it says a lot about you.

Sorry for the confusion in what my good friend Jim Roche put into his

e-mail. He meant to say the Route 66 Preservation Foundation. We used to be

called the California Route 66 Preservation Foundation and sometimes still

are. But we are in the process of dropping California from our name has it

was misleading. We work in all eight states and have been asked to drop off

the state name. Our mission is to preserve, restore, promote and enjoy all

historic roads and corridors by working with all associations, groups and

people with similar goals.

We get asked to endorse many products, concepts, events and people. It is

our intention to assist those that deserve our help and will fit into the

Route 66 Community. Jim and his book are but one of those relationships.

When we come across someone that is honest and shares our passion and

commitment to helping the road we are honored to lend a hand. If this opens

some doors and helps sell their products with some of the profit coming back

to our foundation to continue our mission then we are all winners.

We want to assure you that you are not missing out it is just that we do not

make formal announcements of where we add our support. We have many such

relationships that are very successful. Jim and his book have earned all of

our support.

We hope this clears up the misunderstanding.

Take care and see you on the road.

Thanks

Guest Alex Burr

Gabriel - have I got a trip for you!!!

Go to Fort Smith, Arkansas - then a few miles east

on I-40 to Alma. Take U S 71 north to Kansas City

from there.

I've not traveled 71 between Alma and Carthage but

my daughter and I have taken 71 between KC and

Carthage.

In Carthage there's a Civil War museum - very

interesting - and nearby is a Civil War battlefield.

Check Carthage out @:

http://www.visit-carthage.com/intro.htm

North of Carthage is Lamar, boyhood home of

President Harry S. Truman.

Plan on stopping off in Nevada (they call it

Nevayda), next large town north of Lamar. There are

several beautiful churches to look at and a great

museum detailing the Civil War exploits between the

Jayhawkers and Bushwhackers. More on that here @:

http://www.civilwarstlouis.com/History/EdwardsVSMcElroy.htm

I've heard, I think, that 71 between Alma and the

Joplin area isn't in that good condition and indeed

looking at MS Streets and Trips 71 looks to have a lot

of curves in it - however, there is an interstate

spur, I-540 that goes to Rogers. Or, if you are

pressed for time, just go up to Joplin and pick up 71

either in Joplin (Joplin is a Rt 66 town) or go east a

few miles and pick it up off I-44.

Have a safe trip.

US 71 north of Alma is 2-lane with some nice views and a lookout tower, but

I-540 has a 1 mi tunnel.

Exit I-540 onto US 62 East at Rogers AR. Pea Ridge National Battlefield is a

few miles east of Rogers.

http://www.nps.gov/peri/

Con't east on US 62 to Eureka Springs AR.

http://www.eurekasprings.com/

The huge (65' wide) Christ of the Ozarks Statue, Passion Play, museums and

tours.

http://www.eurekasprings.com/passionplay/

Thorncrown Chapel, West of town.

http://www.eurekavacation.com/thorncrownchapel/

If you stay in AR on US62, take BR 62 at Cotter AR. Multi-arch Marsh Rainbow

Arch bridge. At the 4-way stop, turn right to park under bridge.

http://www.cotterarkansas.com/bridge.htm

North and East of West Plains is the Ozark National Scenic Riverways, if you

like canoeing. It is centered around Eminence, north of US 60 on MO 19.

http://www.nps.gov/ozar/

Take US 60 around the south side of Springfield. About 2 miles after US 60

exits the the James River Freeway, make a left onto hwy M, and a right onto hwy

ZZ. A couple of miles south is the Wilson's Creek National Battlefield.

http://www.nps.gov/wicr/

Backtrack to US60. Take hwy MM to I-44, or cross over I-44 to MO 266. This is

old US 66, that runs into MO 96 (still old US 66), that will take you to

Carthage.

At Nevada, exit BR 71. When BR 71 turns right, con't straight for 2 more

lights. Turn right and go 2 blocks.

Since there is nothing between Nevada and K.C., go west on US 54 (20 mi) to

Fort Scott KS. Con't under the US 69 interchange. A reproduction of the fort is

on the right.

http://www.nps.gov/fosc/

There is construction north of Fort Scott.

At K.C., one of the lesser know history museums is the Arabia Steamboat museum

at 400 Grand, in the City Market area. It has the items brought up from a

riverboat sunk in 1856.

US 71 north of Alma is 2-lane with some nice views and a lookout tower, but

I-540 has a 1 mi tunnel.

Exit I-540 onto US 62 East at Rogers AR. Pea Ridge National Battlefield is

a few miles east of Rogers.

http://www.nps.gov/peri/

--The lookout tower at Mount Gaylor is closed, but there's a nice lookout at

Artist's Point :)

--Fayetteville has lots of Civil War & other Historical sites

http://www.fayettevilletourism.com/attractions/heritage/

Con't east on US 62 to Eureka Springs AR.

http://www.eurekasprings.com/

The huge (65' wide) Christ of the Ozarks Statue, Passion Play, museums and

tours.

http://www.eurekasprings.com/passionplay/

Thorncrown Chapel, West of town.

http://www.eurekavacation.com/thorncrownchapel/

-- The man who designed it was from Fayetteville ;)

Take US 60 around the south side of Springfield. About 2 miles after US 60

exits the the James River Freeway, make a left onto hwy M, and a right onto

hwy ZZ. A couple of miles south is the Wilson's Creek National Battlefield.

http://www.nps.gov/wicr/

Backtrack to US60. Take hwy MM to I-44, or cross over I-44 to MO 266. This

is old US 66, that runs into MO 96 (still old US 66), that will take you to

Carthage.

-- OR go west on 60 to MO 174 at Republic (old US 166) to Mt Vernon . From

there, you can take MO 39 to MO 96. ;)

Sorry to reply to my own post, but scenery isn't what I look for on the

road, I consider scenery a given. I look for the most kitschy or off

the wall place to eat or pump a tankful or just relax.

As most of you have heard both Hampton Inns and I were nominated for this

years Presidential Preserve America Award. Both of us were in the final

groups being considered. Well Hampton won in their division and we will be

meeting with the President on Monday morning May 1st for the awards ceremony

at the White House. I will be in Boston for the Historic Roads Conference so

the timing works out great. I don't think we could get the President to

change his schedule anyway.

The BLM nominated me and I had nominated Hampton. So I had two chances to

win. Just being nominated was an honor for both of us but the thrill of

winning has not set in just yet. Add this award to the others we have

received over the last few years gives great creditability to our work on

Route 66. We want to share this with all of those that have supported us,

worked with us and been a part in anyway of our efforts to preserve,

restore, promote and enjoy the road. We aren't done yet.

Add in 'CARS', Will Rogers, Universal, The Route 66 Pulse newspaper and now

this to the list for 2006. And we are not even half way through the year.

Looking forward to seeing each and everyone of you this year.

Thanks

After I finished my Dayton Cutoff drive a couple of weeks back, I learned

that I had driven by one of its mile markers without even knowing it. The

markers were made to resemble those used on the Ohio section of the National

Road to help convince travelers they were on the official route. You can see

it in Enon, OH, or, in two dimensions, at

http://www.dennygibson.com/DayTrips/Trip15/dstmm.htm

I learned of the Enon mile marker at a National Road presentation in

Englewood, OH. Some information about the small but worthwhile display is at

http://www.rths.org/newsletter.htm

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems,

but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

Living on Earth had a segment about the 50th Anniversary of the Interstate

System.

It's kind of ironic: they used the Route 66 theme to segue into the story.

There's also an interesting quote they used from James Dean.

There's a realaudio archive and an MP3 download of the show or you can read

the transcript.

Where would I start? Wisconsin is noted for great scenic drives

wherever one goes in it.

Since you are intending to use Hudson, WI as a base, what better way

for a motorcycle tour to go than to head south to Prescott, WI (a very

short distance via County 'F') and hop onto the Great River Road,

following that south along the Mississippi River to Prairie du Chien.

Then continue east on WI 60 along the Wisconsin River to Sauk City,

WI (home of the 'flagship' Culver's), cross the Wisconsin River via US

12 to WI 188 and take WI 188 northeast to the WI 113 free ferry into

Merrimac (make local inquiry regarding ferry operations) and then

follow WI 113 to the Baraboo/Devils Lake State Park area. After

getting done in the Baraboo-Wisconsin Dells area, you could then

follow US 12 (NOT paralleling I-94) back to Hudson or do more

exploring such as trying WI 33 westward from the Baraboo area to La

Crosse with a sidetrip south to La Farge or Soldiers Grove on WI 131.

The possibilities are endless in that part of the state.

Enjoy!
