That means...mine is somewhere out there...on it's way. How exciting

!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Laurel, thanks for the printer's ink. When I was in high school, I worked at

our local newspaper. Most of the work was done manually. In order, words, it

had to be hand fed into the printers, stitichers and folders.

I tore open the box of American Road Magazines I ordered for Afton Station

the moment it arrived today. It's just beautiful! It looks good, reads

wonderfully, and even SMELLS good! (The aroma of printers' ink was

overwhelming and very pleasant.) It's such a wonderfully constructed

magazine, with great pictures and graphics, and stories that will appeal to

roadies everywhere. I have the feeling this will be the first magazine I've

ever read cover-to-cover without skipping a single word, right down to the

list of staff and contributors! It's fun to personally know so many of the

people involved in a publication of this quality and appeal. Congrats Tom,

Jim and the rest of the staff! And now, back to reading.....

Jim,

Thanks for the great map series the you Jerry put together on route

66. First time I tried to find the OLD road I was going by the Snyder

book and though its a great resource it was at time VERY frustrating.

The adventure was great at times. In Oklahoma his old maps were great

in helping rertrace the dirt road through Geary and to the old toll

bridge on the other side of the river from Bridgeport.

The next time I was out west your map series was available and I

found it to be a valuable resourse. One thing that I would love to

see American Road do is a complete guide to New Mexico. I know that

you did a series of stories in Rt 66 mag. on N.M. and the Santa Fe

loop but I only have the part from Santa Fe to Laguna. I love that

old loop and try and revisit it everytime I go to the area. There are

some aeras that I would love to explore next time I travel that way

but just don't know where to start. Like the old road northwest out

of Santa Rosa. Also sections Between Las Vegas and Santa Fe.

There are large sections that I have yet to explore in Arizona. I

traveled what I thought at the time were the oldest parts later to

find that there were old sections that I totally missed.

I've also found that there are some sections even in my own state

Illinois that I've missed. I found some of the old brick sections

here but have yet to find the 8 ft wide sections. I found the * ft

sections in Oklahoma but not here in my own state.

The first time I was out in the N.M. aera I had my jeep but didn't

know how to find some of the old road south of Santa Fe. The next

time I was out there I found those aeras but no jeep. I sttod at the

bottom of La Bajada hill and was kicking myself for not having 4

wheel drive. After reading you article in 66 mag where you drove it

maybe I'm glad I didn't have it.

Thanks so much for always sharing your knowledge and helping to make

these road trips less frustrating.

Oh, being a "theologian" who has English Dictionaries, Hebrew Dictionaries and

the Old Testament in Hebrew, I looked up the word "maven" and found out what it

really meant. I had originally thought that it referred to a "matronly" type

person; but, the definition fits Pat and what he does.

In Yiddish, it is pronounced "may'-vuhn and in Modern Hebrew, it is pronounced

"may-been" [rhymes with may-bean]. A maven is an expert or connoisseur. It also

means "one who taught, one who gave understanding, and teacher." A woman who is

a teacher is a Mavenah pronounced, may-been-uh.

While I never met Johnny Cash, I did meet John Ritter's father, Tex Ritter, at

church one time.

Sometime in early 1956 I was in Memphis, attending

Aviation Machinest Mate school at NAS Millington.

Took a gal I was dating (turned into 1st wife/ex-wife

in rather short order :( ) to a concert in Overton

Park. Feature singer of the eveing was some guy who

couldn't stand still while he was singing name of, uh,

er, oh yeah, Elvis.

Way down on the bill, in rather small letters was

the name of another singer, Johnny Cash. Man, I

thought to myself, this guy sings from hunger!!!

Little did I, or probably anybody else in that

audience, know where that one was going with his

career!!!

Safe journey home, Big John - June's a'waiting for

you over the hill. Thanks for all the great years we

had listening to your great music.

Thanks for the heads-up, Joe. I need to pass this on to the Mrs, as

she's referred to as the "Maveness". Guess she needs to changed her

website! :-)

Some folks on the list wondered when Johnny died. Several reports I saw

indicated that Johnny passed at 2 a.m. Friday in the hospital of complications

from

diabetes. And he had a host of other ailments on top of that -- glaucoma,

that nervous system disease that plagued him, asthma and probably some other

things I can't recall. I swear, he looked bad back in 1996 during his

"Unchained"

album, and to stay alive as long as he did -- especially after June's death --

had to be an act of sheer will.

A writer of which I know in Nashville talked to Marty Stuart, who's part of

the extended Cash family. Stuart said that in the past few months, a couple of

buzzards took up residence in a tree near the Cash home, staring at Johnny. Of

course, Johnny simply stared back at them.

And I'm sure a few folks might think Johnny Cash is off-topic from American

Road's purposes. I couldn't disagree more. Johnny Cash made some of the best

damn road music around (get the two-CD "The Essential Johnny Cash" that was

released last year if you don't believe me -- and if anything, it's not long

enough). Some of my fondest memories is of hearing Cash's "Understand Your Man"

on

an old Tulsa AM radio station while cruising Route 66 in eastern Oklahoma.

Talk about suddenly feeling like I'd been transported back about four decades

This one really hits home. I grew up watching Johnny

on TV in his show from the 1970s. He was my dad's

My dad, as long as I knew him, didn't care much for anything resembling popular

music....he would play his Mozart and Wagner till the dogs moaned, but the only

time he turned on the radio was to listen to Jack Buck and the Cardinals...the

exception was Johnny Cash...Johnny sang songs about people, real people, hard

luck people, those who deserve a break people, angry people, killin type

Hmmm - wonder if that's part of that scheme to

run an interstate down the eastern side of the

Mississippi River thru the NW corner of Memphis,

burying part of U S 51 - and by-passing the rest.

The plan is that such an interstate would

either cut thru the NW corner of Memphis and

connect with 40 in downtown Memphis, or swing a

bit east and connect with I-40 east of Memphis.

There is still movement afoot in Memphis to cut

I-40 thru the heart of Overton Park in the middle

of town - they keep inching toward it every year.

Overton is a beautiful piece of park, similar to

Central Park, with the Memphis zoo there.

Politicians love these highway projects - they

can point and tell you about all the "jobs"

they've created - what they don't tell you is (1)

the work is usually down by out of area

contractors and (2) when the road is done, the

jobs are gone. And to many people, by this

idiocy - along with the "great improvement it's

going to make in traffic flow........yada yada

yada" interminably.

Progress can be a great thing - if done right.

Hello there! My name is Bob Reynolds and I'm an old road lover down

in Tennessee. I haven't seen much reference to southern roads, but

there are a lot of them around, and I hope to bring a little

southern flavor to the group with my posts and photos.

My particular love is old bridges and tunnels. It's very sad to see

so many camelback truss bridges being replaced by modern, soulless

spans. I realize the newer bridges are safer, but they totally lack

character. Such is progress, I suppose. And I also suppose there

were folks way back when complaining that the new fangled bridges

were replacing all the ferries:) Time marches on:)

I've created a new photo file titled "BabyBoomerBob", and posted a

few local photos featuring the US 11 bridge at Loudon, TN, and some

downtown art. My wife and I recently took a day trip down to

Chattanooga, a trip I hope to write up and post soon.

I am thoroughly delighted to find a group of fellow roadies, not to

mention that magnificent magazine!

Welcome to the group, Bob. I did some old road traveling in TN for

several years as part of my (then) employment. Drove highways 20,

22, 45, 51, 64, and 104 lots of time. I worked in places like Union

City, McKenzie, Lexington, Dyer, Trenton, Humboldt, Selmer, Savannah,

and Kenton. Blue highways are everywhere.

Alex,

This is indeed the same interstate. I found a nice article with

some maps of the future route here:

Although it's not easy to do, and does NOT usually work, it is

possible to stop these projects if enough people oppose them and do

it properly. There was a plan in Chicago back in the 1970s to build

yet another expressway within the city that would run north and south

along Cicero Avenue on Chicago's west side, to connect I-55, I-290, I-

90, and I-94. Named the Crosstown Expressway, it was touted as a way

to divert through-traffic from the congested downtown area. Thousands

of businesses and homes would have been destroyed for

this "progress".

BUT, even though bonds were already sold, Federal funds had already

been obtained, and plans were completed, the project was halted by

the determination of a whole bunch of people. The funds were used for

alternative transportation projects instead, such as extending the

Rapid Transit rail service all the way to O'Hare airport and building

the rail line that runs from downtown to Midway airport.

So, if you feel strongly about trying to stop some or all of this

project, don't give up! It CAN happen!

Greetings Fellow Road Warriors,

Here is an update attachment that Michael's office secretary sent to

me yesterday:

File name: October_23_Michael.doc

File type: application/msword

October 23, 2002

MICHAEL WALLIS update:

Michael had surgery on Tuesday, and the good news was that there was

no infection in the leg wound, so doctors closed it for the first

time.

Now they will schedule surgery on his hip – probably next week.

There are some bone chips that they need to get out of the hip

socket. Eventually he will need a hip replacement.

I spoke with Suzanne this morning and she said Michael had his best

day yet and his spirits are goods. He is enjoying all the cards,

emails, etc., though he is on so much medication, that he can only

look at them a few at a time.

There is still concern and danger of blood clots and embolism.

I will try to update you often.

Thanks Pat,

I sort of thought it was - this is "progress"

shoved down peoples throat.

There already interstates between Indianapolis

and Memphis - this is a sop to those on the east

side who want an interstate down thru west

Tennessee. It will save drivers, perhaps, a half

hour. I know - I've driven most of it.

I can run I-57 (picking it up east of Decatur

using U S 36 east to get to it), down thru

southern IL into MO and I-55 to West Memphis (or

as Memphians put it - left Memphis!!) to my

daughters in Memphis in 7 hours, no sweat. (An

alternate is I-155 off 55 over to Dyersburg and

south on 51 to Memphis. I can run the same using

U S 51 in about 7? hours.

U S 51 in Tennessee is now 4 lane limited

access from just west of Fulton, KY all the way

into Memphis. So is an extension of 69 really

needed. I don't think so.

You are in Michigan - you have a desire to

visit Mexico. Ok, 69 to Indy, 70 to Ok City and

35 south to Neuevo Laredo. That's it. Or you

can take 69 to Indy, 70 over to 57 to 55 to 40

Little Rock, then 30 to Dallas and 35 to Mexico.

You can also go thru St. Louis. How many

Interstates to the Illegals and drug smugglers

(ooopppps, that's not "politically correct")

need, for crying out loud.

My soap box for the day.
