Hi Mike!

Haven't talked to you in a while! Yes....the North Rim is another area I want

to visit. When we were there recently at the South Rim, my mom said the

pictures didn't turn out all that great because it was all hazy and foggy in the

Canyon. (I'm still eagerly awaiting my pics in the mail!) Well, there was a fire

at the North Rim, and I guess a pretty big one, and the smoke was pushed inside

the Canyon....it stretched pretty far. Then when we left Hilltop on the West

end after going to Supai, you could see where the fire was stemming from at the

North Rim.....it looked huge.

I'd love to visit the Canyon in the wintertime after a snowfall. I'll bet it's

absolutely gorgeous. Although I know many parts of the North Rim are closed off

during the winter months.

Nicole,

Next time you get a couple of days off try the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.

It's a little harder to get to than the South Rim but there's about a tenth as

many people to contend with, it's a lot less commercialized, and the views are

at least as spectacular, if not more so.

Hi all-

The words that come to mind the most when I think of Supai/Havasu Falls is

spectacular, awesome, breathtaking, unbelievable, unbeatable, and simply WOW.

I have been to the South Rim numerous times now..I love the Grand Canyon. In

fact, that place has squeezed its way to #1 in my book, having to share that

spot with Route 66. I have much more exploring time to do up there, and many

more days to request off of work in order to enjoy myself in a place that to me,

is the most beautiful place I have ever been. The South Rim is awesome..a place

where you take family or friends if they've never been, a place where you first

introduce someone to this great wonder, or a great place to introduce yourself

to if you've never been. BUT..that Canyon is such a huge majestic place, that

an average 4 hour visit to the South Rim is just the tip of the iceberg, the

taste before the indulgence. I've learned that I really underestimated what

that Canyon has to offer. I know even though I've now been to (which I will

elaborate on shortly) what I deem the most beautiful and magical place I've ever

seen with my own two eyes, there are still many

more

places to explore in the Grand Canyon. I found my new hobby: Gathering all

the info whether it be books, brochures, word of mouth, educated persons who

know more than I do..whatever, the Grand Canyon is where it's at for me until I

can go no further. How lucky I am that I can just drive there in a few hours

time. I can be at the west end of the Canyon in only 2 hours. As far as I'm

concerned, that certainly is something to brag about.

Nicole, I really enjoyed your story about your trip to Supai. I make it a point

to stay in Peach Springs at Hualapai Lodge either going to or coming from

California. Good food, rooms and very nice people. I forgot the year it was

built and open but was so excited when I saw the lodge coming down the hill into

Peach Springs.(it's in my notes) Never did I do the trip you did but am

interested in riding a horse to Supai. Will be on 66 starting October 13 and

hope to see or talk to you on my journey......Jane

On AZ 89, a few miles north of Congress, there is a stone walled

overlook. There is a dedication plaque to Charles Churchill Small.

Internet searches on that name have come up empty despite the fact

that the plaque calls him "The father of Arizona highways".

Can anyone point me to any info on Charles or this structure? It's

merely curiosity but deeply frustrated curiosity:) A picture of the

plaque is at:

Greetings Fellow 66 Roadies,

Received a phone call from dear compadre Michael last night. His

recovery took a bit of a reverse turn this week. Apparently, one of

those leg wounds has got reinfected. He will have to return to the

hospital today for another surgery. He is making good progress in

maintaining his spirits and courage concerning this relapse, but he

is growing weary and tired of having his life so confined during this

recovery.

Please keep Michael and Suzanne in your prayers ALL this week. Pray

for additional strength and courage for the both of them. Pray that

Michael will not have to spend Christmas day in a hospital bed. Pray

for a speedy and WHOLE recovery for his leg and shoulder AND entire

body, mind and spirit! Mike needs us right now, as does his wife

Suzanne and the entire family!

Keep the cards, letters and gifts coming in! Michael told me that

receiving those items really helps him out, as he told me that he

draws strength from those acts of LOVE! Since we are praying for a

short stay in the hospital this time, it might be best to just keep

those get well wishes coming in to his house address and Suzanne can

bring the items to him.

Have a Blessed Christmas everyone! Reflect on this past year we've

all had and make plans for a grand and joyous New Year!

God Bless our very dear Route 66 Family!!!

It appears the honorable governor of Indiana has gone against the

wishes of the citizens and will plow a new route for I-69 through

southwest Indiana. It appears he and INDOT are the only ones who want

this route. Me wonders what tune he would be singing if he was in his

1st term as gov instead of his 2nd (2 term limit here in Hoosierland).

There are some great two-lane state highways in that part of the

state...but by golly, now you'll be able to cut your travel time to

Evansville (the vacation destination of ALL the midwest) from

Indianapolis by 26 minutes. Just enough time to stop in and have a

great meal at a McBurger at the exit that looks just like the ones at

the exits all over Generica. Alright, sorry for the tangent. Back to

work.

What was the name of the church?

Just remembering off the top of my head, the El Rancho is just south of Castaic

proper on the old two-lane , the Shell Station (one of the early pre-fabricated

panel jobs) was across the highway...they may be long gone now.

The church was a Baptist church...I THINK that when it was a restaurant (before

being bypassed) it was called the La Torre Cafe...I found an image from an old

matchbook on ebay, and the Mission architecture looks right. I can barely

remember the inside of the sanctuary (which was probably the main dining room)

and my Sunday school room, which had very thick walls, and a fireplace, I

believe... The Cafe was "on the new ridge route... Castaic, California"... which

would have been the first 2-lane bypass of the original ridge route...I seem to

remember it being on the left side of the road (headed north) but didn't see it

when I was there in 1981.

Love to see you get out here soon before everything really changes. Castaic

has been a major stop for truckers off the 5 Fwy. With Castaic becoming a

bedroom community, I believe the services for truckers will disappear over

the next 10 to 15 years. Love to tag along with you if you get out here.

I wonder how much that I'd recognise is still left? If I can ever make the time

I nominate the old Boonville, MO bridge on Route 40. 25 MP. The steel

decking made your car sway side to side at any speed over 10 MPH.

Locals took that old bridge at 40+. You could always tell who wasn't

from Boonville by how fast they took the bridge. Sadly, it was torn

down about five years ago.

Route 65 at Waverly, Missouri...? It's actually in really good shape...

but

in the darkness at night, in the fog, on the downgrade, with a little

imagination and the sound of the ribbed deck... it can give ya chills!!!

An agreement has been reached, and the McKinley is set to reopen in 2004 or

2005. There's a lot of work to be done. I've read some tentative plans for it,

and there should be some nice additions. This will be a good thing, as it

reopens an old alignment of 66, and it will help the roadside businesses like

John's Drive-In in Venice and some good restaurants and one full-serve gas

station, Gitcho's, in Granite City. Even better news -- it will be a free

bridge.

Our bridge situation is questionable. The Chain of Rocks on

The Poplar Street Bridge (I-55/70/64) is quite troublesome now because of

repairs on ramps on the Missouri side. But that should be cleared up by the

fall.

The Jefferson Barracks Bridge (I-255) is fine, but there's a lot of

construction leading up to it on the Missouri side in the next few weeks. The

Chain of

Rocks Bridge (I-270) is fine, too, after a troublesome construction project

about five years ago.

Actually, the MacArthur has been closed to vehicular traffic since 1980,

which kinda infuriates me. All these traffic mess-ups on the Poplar Street

Bridge,

and yet there's a still-functioning bridge that would seem to be a

halfway-decent funnel onto Interstate 55 and south St. Louis. Don't think about

sneaking

onto the MacArthur and driving it, either. That's because they completely

took out about a 50-foot section of roadbed on the East St. Louis side after it

closed. In fact, you can see this missing section if you look carefully while

crossing the Poplar Street Bridge. My wife and I have explored the MacArthur

Bridge area on the East St. Louis side on 10th Street. There's a big chain-link

fence blocking the entrance, along with cool ruins of an old gas station and

an old neon sign for the defunct Nichols BBQ. By the way, this alignment was

part of Route 66 (city route) and Route 40. You can check out the MacArthur

Bridge's former entrance on the Missouri side very close to the venerable Eat

Rite

Diner ("Eat Rite or don't eat at all") at Chouteau and Seventh.

The Martin Luther King Bridge is fine, near as I can tell. They did some work

on it about two years ago, so it should be in good shape for a while. The

Eads Bridge (opened in 1871, I believe) reopened on the July 4 holiday after

about 10 years of repairs and reconstruction (it never was completely taken out

of

service, as the MetroLink light-rail runs on it, too). It's a nice cruising

bridge, with a 35 mph speed limit, and Emily and I have used it when traffic on

the Poplar Street Bridge going into Illinois was jammed.

As for the new bridge, Lord knows when it will actually be started. It's

supposed to be an Interstate 70 bridge that crosses north of downtown. But with

state and federal budget crunches, construction will probably be put off a few

years. I think we're looking at 2012 or 2015 before it's ever done.

A Road Runs Through It

Route 20 reveals unexpected treasures to those who take their time

Photos by Michael Davis Text by J.T. Hall

---------------------------------------------------------------------

-----------

In many ways, and in many places, a trip across New York state on

Route 20 remains a journey into the past. This old federal highway,

which spans the continent--it is one-third again as long as its more

celebrated cousin, Route 66--enters New York in obscurity from

Massachusetts at New Lebanon and exits quietly into the northwestern

spur of Pennsylvania, more than 340 miles to the west, at Ripley.

Some of the places along the way are well-known; Albany and Buffalo

lie near either end, and a few Erie Canal-era towns like Auburn,

Seneca Falls, Geneva and Canandaigua have made their own mark on

history. Yet much smaller, obscure hamlets are the rule. Silver

Creek, Pavilion Center, Bloomfield and Avon (pronounced Aaa-von) to

the west, and West Winfield, Richfield Springs, Leesville and

Esperance to the east characterize a largely rural highway bypassed

by the hum of commerce and development.

Route 20 originated in 1799 when the New York State Legislature, in

the interest of emigration and commerce, commissioned private

companies to develop turnpikes, for which the companies were

permitted to charge tolls. In Central New York, the Cherry Valley

Turnpike connected Albany first to Cherry Valley and then, at the

initiative of Cazenovia's John Lincklaen, to Cazenovia and Manlius.

To the west, the Seneca Turnpike proceeded to Skaneateles. This

patchwork system eventually bisected the state, and a surge of

traffic followed. Route 20 carried emigrants in covered wagons,

drovers following herds, and freight in utility rigs.

The traffic ebbed, however, when the Erie Canal opened in 1825,

offering easier, safer travel. By 1859, the state had bought out all

of the original turnpike companies, eliminating tolls. After the

Civil War, a wave of improvements ensued, making routes like the

Cherry Valley Turnpike easier to traverse. Route 20 languished,

however, while the east-west corridor to the north--the Mohawk

Valley, the Erie Canal and the railroad routes--saw industrial

development.

The advent of automobile travel brought new life to the old road

after 1915, spurring road improvements and commercial development

aimed at travelers. As with its earlier prosperity, however, Route

20 would once again see its lifeblood drawn off by a better option

to the north. When the New York State Thruway opened in the mid-

1950s, the road to the south began yet another decline.

Today Route 20 is an amalgam of the past and the present, a worn

anachronism at one turn, an enduring symbol of vitality at the next.

Buffalo's Rich Stadium looms near one terminus, Albany's Empire

State Plaza at the other. And somewhere along the road connecting

them are fallow fields regenerating into forests, farm stands

spilling over with bountiful harvests, post-and-beam barns on their

last legs and prosperous farms with "Dairy of Distinction" laurels

postered out front.

Travelers also find forlorn roadside cabins whose last guests

departed a generation ago, a giant teepee full of knickknacks,

quaint lakeside villages favored by the rich and famous, dead farm

equipment, fast-food joints, real diners and lots of open space. The

road may have gone north, but after more than 200 years, Route 20

remains what it must have been at the beginning: a fascinating drive.

I recall Ron Warnick saying that there is an 8 year or so timetable on

fixing the bridge but that they are going to put it back into

commission...the King Bridge is actually in excellent shape and is a decent

alternative when the Poplar Street Bridge is gunked up...Eads is in great

shape and depending on who you ask looks nice (one person said that the

roadbed looks like an interstate highway, which I guess it does but beats

tearing it down)...it puts you into East St. Louis coming from the West,

with easy access to the ugly road...I wish they would do something with the

MacArthur/Municipal Bridge, which was the principal crossing into downtown

before the Poplar, but alas it appears that it is and will remain a parking

lot...Tsingtao, Kip

Denny,

Landrunner is "THE" one to go to before you take a road trip. He knows it all,

no matter where it is you're headed. He certainly lives up to his name. I know

if I ever have any questions on where to go....or a better route to take on any

of my travels.....he's the man to go to.

Ken...did you get your most current issue of Arizona Highways yet? There's a

good article in there on Blue Country.

Just 2-1/2 more weeks till our trek into Supai/Havasu Falls. I'll keep you

posted on events, I am very excited about this trip!!

I've had membership pending in the Route 40 eGroup for awhile but

just put it off to busy schedules. I know Frank is a member here so

thought I'd ask if all is well? I see his last post here was a couple

of months back.
