I just posted some photos in the Photos section (folder: Old Spanish Trail)

showing images of

the Pacific Milestone in downtown San Diego. It's aged since 1923, but it's

still there. This

was the terminus for the OST, and the effective terminus to the Lee Hwy even

though it

supposedly went north to San Francisco.

I also included a dedication photo from 1923 with Ed Fletcher second from left.

It looks like it

was partly painted back then.

I posted a couple of maps and a few photos of the November 1915 trip along the

Southern

National Highway from San Diego to Washington. They are in the Photos section in

a folder

called Southern National.

Great pictures, Parsa! Interesting. The Southern National

Highway is one I've never heard of. And it ran through Knoxville and

Chattanooga:) The picture of the bridge at Memphis was especially

interesting. It's pretty certain the bridge on the right was the

Harrihan Bridge, the bridge that doubled as a highway and railroad bridge.

And thanks for directing us to your virtual Route 66 Tour! Susan

and I took the Mother Road from Chicago as far as the pony bridge near

Bridgeport OK back in 2002. Looks like there was a *bunch* of stuff

we missed:)

Hehe, there was a bunch of stuff I missed on 66 in a way too. I usually did the

things I'd

seen in coffee table books and guidebooks, but there were things I really

enjoyed that I

haven't seen mentioned much (the McLean County museum in Bloomington for

instance). I

bet there were a lot of things I missed, especially in big cities like St.

Louis. Those are

places where you could spend days seing things.

...and a smiling hey back at you. Thanks for the kind words. I did enjoy

your neighborhood including, in addition to US-60's east end, the Colonial

Parkway and the places it connects - Williamsburg, Jamestown, & Yorktown. A

neat blend of colonial, revolutionary war, & civil war history.

I don't believe American Road has yet done a US-60 travel piece but they did

do an article on the 60/66 "discussions" that you mention.

With your expressed interest in Sixty-Six, I'd guess that you'd enjoy a day

trip on it out of Chicago. But I'm sure there are plenty of other ideas,

too.

I'm looking to do a weekend trip this coming weekend from Central Jersey up to

Vermont/New Hampshire. Any suggestions on scenic routes and stops on the way?

I'm getting a little overwhelmed with finding on what to do...

Help!

Take 95 up to Portsmouth - stop at the NH Info

center as you come into NH and get tons of brochures

to give you ideas.

Head up route 16 into Conway and the Mt. Washington

Valley - tons of stuff to do up there. From there

it's easy to head west thru VT and back south down

Route 7 toward NJ.

Be aware gas prices up here are spiking like crazy -

will be well over $3 a gallon for a while. Probably

go down some after Labor Day, but I wouldn't bet on

it.

Have a safe trip.

Thanks Brian.

Browsing your site, I remember the Abandoned Turnpike thread here.

I stuffed a folder of links on topic at the time, under another assumed ID.

Congrats on getting out of Joisey!

I've had quite enough of it all here this summer.

Going to Strasburg, PA for a weekend near the end of September.

Topped off the tanks yesterday at $2.53, today it's around $3.00

Sunshine & sixtyish temperatures showed up in Ohio again yesterday and I

felt obligated to go somewhere. This time it was a bit to the southeast of

Columbus to the Morgan County Scenic Byway. The day started at 33 degrees F

but ended at 62. It won't be too long before 33 or less will be the high and

knowing that makes me appreciate days like yesterday even more. Besides a

little scenic two lane, I took an open air bus ride through The Wilds.

That's where the buffalo roam and the deer and the oryx play.

Pics and words from yesterday's excursion are up at

Alex,

Are you speaking of U.S. highways that currently exist or ones that existed in

the past? I live about 2 miles away from where four U.S. highways (60-70-80 and

89) shared the same piece of road some years back. If you're speaking of any

and all U.S. highways, both decommissioned and still around, that it could start

a rush for those old roadmaps and atlases to find all of those roads. The fact

that I happen to own close to 6,000 road maps and atlases going back to the

1920s just makes me even more interested.

A super trivia road game---no better way to start the new year!

Petrified Forest National Park has announced that a lot of things

are planned for 2006, two of which will directly affect those of us

travelling along Route 66 in Arizona.

Foremost will be the reopening of Painted Desert Inn which dates to

1924. Until 2004, its continued existence was in doubt. Twice, in

1965 and 1975 it was designated for destruction. It was closed in

2004 for complete renovation.

One of its guestrooms will be rebuilt to 1948 appearance. It is

always great news when something old is saved instead of razed as

all too often occurs these days.

Route 66 passed through the park and a new Rt 66 pullout will be

completed, giving fellow road wanderers a view of the Painted

Desert, the inn, and a stretch of the original alignment. There

will also be original telephone lines that ran along the roadside.

For the complete article from the Arizona Journal go to:

http://azjournal.com/pages/news/Dec05/1230...fiedForest.html

Also, there are some great pictures of the Painted Desert Inn on

Google Image search.

I definitely hope to stay here on my Rt. 66 trip next fall. That

would be some experience.

This is a tough one because if they're co-signed to a

location, they really have already intersected. I was

thinking of Terre Haute, IN....US 40,41,and 150. But 41

and 150 are co-signed for fifty miles or so around Terre

Haute....hmmm.

You might want to wait until tomorrow. Too many drunks, and sometimes they

Did Winslow re-build the building that burned which had the mural on it???

When I was through last June, the wall was the only thing standing and the

sidewalk area was fenced off.
