NOTE: I've forwarded this from the Route 66 list and Route 66 News

list. It's certainly of interest to folks here:

Things are looking bleak for the Boots Motel.

This does not mean it is time to roll over. To quote the late John

Belushi: "Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? NO!"

There are 600 of us and one of that developer. If 600 people write to

the City of Carthage and tell them that we love the Boots, that we

come to town for the express purpose of seeing the Boots, and that we

are going to have one less reason to visit their town and bring our

tourism dollars in if they allow a developer to take the Boots away

from us, they will listen. Especially if we send copies of those

letters to the local newspaper so the community can see exactly how

much this is going to cost them.

But you'd better listen, and listen close: A little handful of letters

will NOT persuade a city to turn away from the prospect of property tax

and sales tax revenue from whatever piece o' crap chain is moving

in here. We need EVERY SINGLE PERSON ON THIS LIST to get off his or

her arse and spend half an hour writing a letter.

This isn't difficult, folks. But it is important.

If you decide to blow it off, I want you to stand in front of the

mirror, look yourself in the eye, and say, "By refusing to take a few

minutes out of my day to write this letter, I am allowing the Mother

Road to be raped and pillaged by developers while I do absolutely

nothing to try to prevent it ... not for any legitimate reason, but

because I'm just too lazy to bother."

On the other hand, if you choose to write letters on behalf of the

Boots, when you get done dropping them in the mailbox, I want you to

come back in, stand in front of the mirror, look yourself in the eye,

and say, "I hope we can save the Boots Motel. But even if we can't, no

matter what happens out there, I know I have done the best I could to

protect it. I held up my end, and I can leave the rest up to fate

because I know that I have done all I could to make sure the Boots is

not destroyed for lack of support." Then go have a beer. You've earned

it!

If you aren't sure how to get started, here's a copy of the action

alert I sent out to members of Friends of the Mother Road this week,

which should be arriving in their mailboxes any time. Your talking

points are outlined right here, and the names and addresses of the

people you need to contact are right here; all you have to do is write

your letter and stick it in the mailbox. Here you go:

John Ferguson, owner of the historic Boots Motel in Carthage, Mo., is

trying to sell his property. He has expressed hopes that someone will

buy the property with the intent of running it as a motel. However,

there are rumors that a developer with deep pockets has been eying the

property. This developer's intentions are unknown at this time, but

they raise a grave concern: If the Boots is purchased by someone who

doesn't understand or doesn't care about its important historic role

as a Route 66 business, it could end up being demolished to make way

for another chain restaurant or drugstore.

Friends of the Mother Road needs your help. Please write a letter to

Mr. Ferguson thanking him for taking such good care of the property all

these years and asking him to resist the temptation to sell it off

to a developer who will not maintain his long tradition of renting

clean, comfortable rooms to sleepy travelers. Tell Mr. Ferguson why

you appreciate the property. Do you enjoy this classic 1939 motel for

its history? Are you charmed by the idea of sleeping in a room where

Clark Gable once slept? Do you have fond memories of a special night

spent there? Tell him. Be polite, and don't forget to thank him for

all he's done to keep the property looking good all these years. While

you're at it, send copies of your letter to the mayor of Carthage and

to the local newspaper so the community will know how you feel!

Here are the addresses:

John Ferguson

Carthage Press

Attn. Ron Graber

Your letter doesn't have to be long or elaborate or poetic. It just has

to be polite and sincere. A flood of simple, honest letters from Route

66 enthusiasts like you can make all the difference in the world in

whether a property remains vital or falls to the wrecking ball.

Please take the time today to write a letter on behalf of the Boots

Motel.

Hi there,

So you focus on a 37 chev pickup? I have photos or a 45 pickup. Yes,

a 1945 chev pickup 80% restored and living and running in Arlington

Heights IL. Trying to get him to take it down route 66 next June.

There were only 200 of the 45's made. Of that only 6 are known to be

left and one of those sold at Southeby's(sp) this year for around 140,000.

Lot of car makers started putting cars out the end

of 1945 - Hudson was one of the earliest. Mostly the

cars were 1941 or 1942 models with a quick face lift.

Emily and I went to see a matinee "The Incredibles" today. Other

than it being a thrilling and funny film, the only other thing of

note is we finally got to see a teaser trailer Pixar's Route 66

movie, "Cars," which will be out in late 2005.

You can see it, too. If you have a broadband connection, I recommend

the super high-res version of QuickTime on the site below. But there

are other options for those with dial-up or other media.

I'm back in Pennsylvania on business and taking the opportunity to check out

the recently completed Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor. The city of

Gettysburg is part of that corridor and, weather permitting, I intend to

spend some time at the battlefield site there.

On the first day, I barely reached the Lincoln Highway but I've posted the

day's short story is at:

http://www.dennygibson.com/lhhc04

Other days, of course, will follow.

Sorry folks for the previous message that slime posted. As soon as I

saw the subject header, the axe quickly fell on his membership. I'll

see what I can do to assure such messages will not happen again. The

list has been quiet of late, but this isn't the kind of activity we

Greg,

There are ALWAYS that 10% that think they are

cute - they just show how ignorant they are.

I've had this happen on my web site - a bunch

of links showed up, all leading to porn sites.

Didn't take long and they were gone.

Thanks for the story - sounds like a good trip. The ghosts are OK

too. Pat and I are fond of quoting Michael Wallis when he says that

it's good to have a little sadness on your journey, it makes you stop

and think. So, a little is OK.

Great pictures to. Sweetwater sounds nice. I like towns like that

with a nice Main Street, shops, etc. Especially bakeries and fudge

shops!!

Now I'm all excited for a road trip!

To answer Michel Laskowski’s question pertaining to our trip to Disneyland

East or better know as DC, NO! No in that no money has been added to the

program so far. We have more support and promises from some members of both

houses to request more funding for the Route 66 Corridor Act. Most lobbying

does not see any results the first year and that is why we will be going

back a few times next year. Out of sight out of mind.

We exceeded in making new friends and keeping the old ones that have

supported us in the past. Now we must take it to another level and keep up

the pressure for increases in the funding level. We also are setting the

stage for funding sources for other needed programs and projects. As I said

in another e-mail we need all the support, involvement and backing we can

muster from all of you. Some of the most important issues are that we join

forces, speak as a group and united in our causes.

We look forward to hearing from all of you on your thoughts, ideas and

suggestions. Each of you can add to our success right in your own area by

getting local, regional, state and federal folks aware of what we are doing.

This many times opens doors for us and gives us the contact people to work

with when dealing with the members of congress/senate and the other

agencies. We will be providing a work sheet on how to assist our efforts by

the first of the year.

Again THANKS for those that went with us last year and for all those that

were with us in spirit.

Wow!

I run Apple computers, am a BIG Pixar Studios and NASCAR fan.

And now a film with Paul Newman and Richard Petty in the cast?

Just can't get any better than this!

Thanks for passing that along Ron.

AOL has this "15 Hours of Fame" thing going, where you're supposed to

create an online journal and submit it for judging. If your entry is

chosen, they put it on the entry page that AOL members see when they

log on, and they leave it there for 15 hours.

Supposedly 25 million people will see this thing if it wins. It's a

long shot, especially since the contest started Oct. 15 and ran

through today, and they've already chosen three of the four winners

... but I figured it was probably worth the couple of hours it took to

set it up, since a win would give Route 66 and Friends of the Mother

Road some unbelievable exposure.

It's not a voting thing. AOL has their own panel that judges the entries.

But if you want to see what I did, you can look here:

http://journals.aol.com/sundayjohn66/AFriendoftheMotherRoad/

It's a blog, so you can post responses if you're interested. Scroll to

the bottom to see the first entry. I wanted that one to be at the top,

but I didn't understand how it worked, so it's got the last one I did

first and the first one last. Oh well. I guess the judges will figure

it out; obviously *they* know how this thing is supposed to work!

Yo:

Bad news to report from the St. Louis area...Spencer's Kirkwood Inn (aka

Spencers Grill) in Kirkwood, MO, on the Route 66 bypass in St. Louis (223 South

Kirkwood Rd/Lindbergh Blvd.) is closing on December 24th. Apparently part of

the problem is the rising property taxes in light of the development in Kirkwood

that contributed in part to the decision, but it is not a result of a lost

lease, condemnation or other such calamity.

This place has been an institution in Kirkwood since William Spencer started

the diner just up the street in 1941. The war called Bill, but he came back and

reopend the diner at its present location in 1947. It was remodeled and the now

familiar sign was added in 1948, and it has been that way ever since...Spence's

boasts some of the best chicken fried steak you will find and as far as a good

ol fashioned greasy spoon goes you won't find many that foot the bill on Route

66 or any other highway better than Spencers--the waitresses make you feel like

you are talking to your best friend (they are almost as good a calling card as

the food), the food is always good and the clientele is as diverse as the Road

it sits on...if you want a last bite you need to stop by before the 24th! It is

worth it...you might want not want to go right at the lunch hour; Kirk told me

that the crowds are pretty thick. Breakfasts will bring you in contact with some

great grub and a great cross section of Kirkwood as well.

For the preservationists, I talked to Kirk and he is already talking to the

owner about saving the sign and other memorabilia...he will be back with me next

week after he hears back from the owner...but we got our foot in the door thanks

to him! Will keep you abreast on that.

Alas, from the Mother Road in Missouri...Tsingtao, Kip

Brian,

Please keep us posted this year when it airs. Also, I really

enjoyed the pictures on your website of the abandoned Pennsylvania

Turnpike section. For us not from the area, how long of a section is

this? How long has it been bypassed? Any other details are welcome

Ahh Jim, I'll bet your Blazer has the 2.8 V6? I had an '87 Cavalier

Z24 that had the same powerplant. I bought it in 1990 with 35K miles,

and when I sold it 8 years later, she had 193K miles of great

roadtrips...and didn't use a bit of "earl". Hey, if anyone out there

knows of a low mileage '87 RED Cavalier Z24 for sale with low mileage

and a tan interior, email me! Now for getting nostalgic, here's a

quicky look at my "first" road partner!

Currently I own my first foreign car, a 2001 Honda Accord with V-6

1992. By my reckoning, I am just about 2 months away from rolling

over a 1/4 million miles. The digital odometer is sitting on 248,000

adventures, no internal engine work has ever been done and it still

doesn't use oil.

I've been tracing the old alignment between Memphis and Millington -

unfortunately not much of it remains.

I've photographed the sections I could get at between the new

alignment, Danny Thomas Blvd, in the Frayser section north to the

Millington line. From Danny Thomas it goes to the west side to N.

Watkins, and a short stretch beyond where it runs into a fence and a

right turn back to the new alignment.

From there a short distance north it bears off, but is blocked by a

fence at an autobody shop - however, just beyond the shop it turns

right and runs east to a point about 2 miles further on. There it

makes a sharp right onto Overton Crossing Road. It is not possible,

even with a 4 WD vehicle to follow the old alignment to the

Loosahatchie River - and would even hard to walk it. There appears to

be no trace of the old road left. Only the Illinois Central tracks

remain - one could conceivably walk the tracks and perhaps find the

old road as they ran pretty close together. However, I don't think

I'd recommend anyone do that unless there are at least 4 people in the

group.

So we turn around, return to the current alignment and proceed

north, by-passing the northern extension of Millington Road for the

moment, where we turn west onto another section that runs for several

miles to the Millington city line. From that point into Millington I

think it follows the current southbound 51 alignment - it's 4 lane

divided now. I base that observaton on the fact that in this stretch

into Millington there is one place where the old style bridge

abutments remain over a small drainage creek.

Turning south at this point, where Millington Road returns to the

current alignment, we turn east onto the old alignment at the point we

picked it up when we were going north toward Millington. Following it

south on the east side of current 51 we come to Fife Road. Crossing

that we continue south for about a mile until we come to the end of

the road at the IC tracks. As on the south side there is no trace of

the old road at this point. When I was there about 3 or 4 years ago,

there was an access, but now there is a fence that blocks all access.

The only thing to do is take a few pictures and turn north back to

Fife Road, and a left turn back to the current alignment.

In a few days I plan on looking into the alignment between where

Millington Road crosses Danny Thomas Blvd into downtown Memphis. It

appears that the old alignment may have run as Millington Road about 4

blocks to where it turns into Whitney, where it makes a right turn,

down hill, to Danny Thomas, across that and then runs to General

Dewitt Spain Airport where it turns left and becomes N. 2nd Street,

which runs down into downtown Memphis.

The current alignment in downtown Memphis, is a bit hard to

understand if one is reading maps. It suddenly disappears and

re-appears a few blocks east as Elvis Presley Blvd. We'll try to

figure out the routing. As for N. 2nd Street - as U S 51 it could

well have turned east on what is now E. H. Crump Blvd and run to the

current alignment, Elvis Presley Blvd. Todays Danny Thomas alignment

could also run this way, but I think it may run down Linden. Will

drive it sometime in the next few days and try to figure it out.

Memphis appears to be the cross-roads of the South. I've counted no

less than seven U S highways - 51, 61, 64, 70, 72, 78 and 79, plus

several state highways - running thru the city. I'm sure there are

other cities with more, but there can't be many.

I will post the pictures I've taken of this section, plus the ones

in the city, when I get back to New England the end of this month.

Happy traveling one and all.

Hudsonly,

Alex B

Guest Butko, Brian A.

The PA Turnpike was built in 1940 on much of the never-used South Penn

railbed and tunnels built c. 1885. Andrew Carnegie felt the Pennsylvania

Railroad was charging too much to haul his steel so started this to force

rates lower:

http://www.paturnpike.com/tools/newsletter...er98/page-4.htm

Since its opening, the Turnpike has been forever straightened and tunnels

bypassed. The abandoned stretch east from Breezewood is about 10 miles long.

The Turnpike Commission closed it in 1968. (The bypass wiped out the

infamous Bill's Place on the Lincoln Highway.) Most of it (8-1/2 miles),

including two tunnels, is now owned by Southern Alleghenies Conservancy,

which maintains it for hiking-biking use. Here's the website; click on

Superhighway Trail.

http://www.ctcnet.net/sac/Projects/home.htm

It says, "The trail is not officially opened, but will be accessible to the

public for hunting access and for future recreation." And now, we're

training troops on it for combat in Iraq!:
