There will be a formal announcement and press release coming from the

SBC&VB next week but I wanted to share with all of you this important

information.

Mr. Michael Wallis will be the joining the following group as the

2005 Cruisin' Hall of Fame Inductee in the Entertainer/Media category;

Bobby Troup 1995

National Hot Rod Assoc. 1996

Hot Rod Magazine 1997

American Graffiti Movie 1998

Jan & Dean 1999

The Beach Boys 2000

Route 66 TV series 2001

Street Rodder 2002

Route 66 Magazine 2003

Hemmings Motor News 2004

And now

Michael Wallis 2005

Michael will add some creditability and class to an already rich and

deserving group. Please join us in San Bernardino in September 2005

to honor our friend and Road Warrior.

This award ceremony is held on Saturday morning at the Rendezvous and

will not conflict with any other event that we have planned. There is

one little draw back and that is that this is an invitation only

event. I will be getting as many tickets as possible and we will be

holding drawings and lotteries for them. Each inductee is allowed

tickets for their family and/or business associates, all of you are a

part of Michael's family and we will do our best to accommodate as

many of you as possible. Some of you that were at this past years

Rendezvous were guests at this event and know that tickets were hard

to come by. Being that there is no charge and tickets are not sold

makes this an even more important event and tickets hard to get. My

first few years working at the Rendezvous I was not invited and until

I had proven myself and earned the right did I get a ticket.

Jo Ann Webb and Steve Henthorn of the SBC&VB are responsible for

making this happen and deserve our thanks for supporting Route 66.

They and the rest of the staff, board of directors and volunteers

that make the Rendezvous the success it is are looking forward to

meeting each and everyone of you in 2005. The Organizing Committee,

which is my honor and pleasure to chair, are busy working on making

your time in Southern California in 2005 an event of a lifetime.

So mark your calendars and make your plans to be at the Rendezvous

and Federations Event in September 2005.

Thanks

That depends:

Was it an incandescent or fluorescent bulb? Perhaps an incalescent

bulb (to generate heat rather than light)?

How many watts?

Energy Star Rated?

Heavy Duty or Industrial rated, or not?

Loathe as I am to admit this, as a Mac user who feels abandoned by

the powers that be, but WordPerfect is a considerably better program

for the following reasons:

Print bar codes on mass mailings to make them more efficient (which

you'll probably use to death in your line of work)

Print formulas more legibly (you may only use this once or twice, but

you'll be glad you have it when you need it).

If you print a document that has a few lines on another page, you can

go into the menu and click on the "Make-It-Fit" expert and shrink it

down to save a sheet of paper. If you print a lot of documents, this

can be the greatest thing since the Commodore 64.

It also happens to be considerably cheaper than Microsoft, but that's

not a huge concern for any of us.

I'll add another stretch of road to the list. U.S. Highway 191, formerly known

as U.S. Highway 666, between Clifton and Alpine, Arizona. It's almost 90 miles

of mountain curves. The posted speed limit rarely gets above 30 mph for the

entire stretch.

I'm not sure this is still driveable, even with a monster SUV, but La

Bajada Hill north of Albuquerque has to be a contender. Old 66 there

has 23 hairpin curves in a little more than two miles. Emily and I

elected to hike it instead of driving it. It was a bit tiring in 95-

degree heat, but it offers hellacious views. We left there just in

time, too. A thunderstorm rumbled through less than two hours after we

left.

Some other favorites for fun, curvy driving:

-- The road that goes through the Smoky Mountain National Park.

-- The road that goes through the Badlands park.

-- Lower Terre Haute Road in far eastern Illinois.

-- Just about any road you find in Jo Daviess County in northwestern

Illinois.

-- That scary ascent up the mountain on Highway 104 northwest of

Tucumcari, leading to Las Vegas, N.M.

Hi Joyce,

Well I think you may be half right on the name but to insure you get the

correct information I am sending this out to two groups that I belong to

(and are both open to new members such as yourself). Someone on the groups

will know the answer for you and in fact will give you information on all

things pertaining to any road in America or Canada.

Thanks for asking and see you on the road.

Have great holidays.

Dear Jim, I hope that I am doing this right. We live in Sturgeon Bay, WI and

upon traveling south to Oklahoma my must stop would be Dixie Truckers Home

for fried mush. Now we are traveling to Florida and consequently heading

down through Indiana and I thought there was another Truckers Home in

Indiana that I might find fried mush at. Am I correct or soooo wrong about

that?

Subject: DC Caravan

Well folks it is getting down to the wire and there is still much to be

done. Here is a list of items that need answers this week;

1. Who is going, how do you plan on going and have you

made your room/airline reservations?

2. Have any of you set up meetings or appointments for us

in DC?

3. Have you made contact with your local media, public

officials and roadies to set up support for both the caravan and you're

being involved?

4. Have you asked for letters showing support for this

project?

5. Do you have blank copies of the petition to get

signatures on over the next six weeks?

6. What do you need from us to assist you in any of the

above?

And of course do any of you have any ideas or suggestions that the group

needs to know about? Check out the distribution list above and see if there

are others that should be on the mailing list. We want this to be successful

and proper planning will assure us of that success.

Please put this project at the top of your list of priorities for the first

part of 2004. I look forward to hearing back from each of you.

Just got back from a long weekend trip to Amarillo (though we

actually made it as far as Adrian, Texas) on Route 66.

This is an interesting thread Pat inadvertently started with his

comment about my new Toyota (it's not a truck though - it's a 2004

Corolla LE). LOL Ron, however was correct about my Neon (I had

mentioned that in passing in a post about a week ago). 1995 - 1999

Plymouth and Dodge Neons has a bad design of the head gasket and

after a Google search we discovered that there are alot of

disgruntled owners out there; most of whom probably would have felt

better about the issue if Chrysler had admitted the problem, did

right by their customers and fixed it! We read there's even a class

action lawsuit involving the issue.

My car had a leaky head gasket, but I decided not to have it

repaired...the new head gasket might have fixed it; but even if it

did, with my luck, the transmission would have then gone out! So we

researched cars for a week and whittled our choices down to the

Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic - the cars were so close in almost all

aspects (safety ratings, resale value, price, reliability, fuel

economy, features, etc.) and I'm sure I would have been happy with

either car. It was so close, and I can't say anything bad about the

Civic at all...but the deciding factors for me were the bigger engine

in the Toyota, as well as the longer powertrain warranty.

I never had a foreign car before this; I had a Plymouth, two Ford

Escorts, and then my Neon. I liked the Neon, unfortunately it was

destined to fail!

We did not take the new car on the trip - I wasn't prepared to burn

up 5% of the warranty mileage in 4 days! Got a great deal on the new

car though - $500 below invoice! :)

What's the saying about publicity? Something like, it doesn't matter if it's

good or bad, as long as your name is spelled right? Interesting article.

Goffs struggles to cope with visitors

By KELLY DONOVAN/Staff Writer

Promoters of the Goffs Cultural Center say they have almost been too

successful in their efforts to attract guests.

Visitors have been flocking to monthly open houses at the remote east Mojave

cultural center in such great numbers that there haven't been enough

volunteers to handle them all, the open house coordinator said.

The cultural center, about two hours east of Barstow, is a 70-acre property

with artifacts and historical displays in more than a dozen buildings, one of

which is a historic schoolhouse.

More than 600 people visited the center last year, mostly during the open

houses, said Helen Baker, a San Fernando Valley resident who organizes the open

houses as a volunteer for the nonprofit Mojave Desert Heritage & Cultural

Association.

Although the center had open houses prior to last year, it didn't have a

regular schedule for them, and didn't publicize them much. The center normally

had

about 100 visitors a year.

Then, in 2003, the center adopted the regular schedule for open houses, got

publicity from media outlets and more people started pouring in.

"It's just been a win-win except that we've got so many people coming that we

need more volunteers," she said. "There's all kinds of people who come to

Goffs -- people interested in history, people interested in four-wheeling,

people

interested in touring the desert."

Goffs had open houses the first weekend of every month last year except in

July, August and September, when it's too hot, Baker said. Its 2004 open houses

are on the same schedule.

Last year's visitors were a mix of out-of-state tourists and California

residents, many of them were stopping off on their way to or from Laughlin,

Nev.,

Baker said.

To volunteer for an open house weekend, or for more information, call Jo Ann

Casebier at 733-4482 or Helen Baker at (818) 705-3930. Information is also

online at www.mdhca.org.

The center is in Goffs at 37198 Lanfair Road, just off National Old Trails

Road.

Hello from bizjournals.com! DAVID WILLMAN (dwillman66@comcast.net) thought

you might like the following article from New Mexico Business Weekly:

The sender's comment about the article:

Thought this was interesting topic for

the group. Does anyone have a list

of how many markers there are per the lower 48 states? Also, how many are

dedicated to trails/roads/highway?

I am usually one of those that stops any chance I get when I see them.

Some of my favorite include:

Santa Fe Trail in Cimarron New Mexico

(US 64),

The Georgetown Loop Railroad in Georgetown Colorado, (old US 6 area)

Pikes Peak in Colorado Springs, CO (old US 85 area)

Since I have been lurking again and not

participating too much,

Would love to see some discussion on this topic and where I could be

directed to find out more. Might be a great topic for Jim, Thomas, and

Becky to pursue for the next publication.

Take Care All,

Mountainair businessman Phil Archuletta and writer/photographer Sharyl

Stockstill will sign copies of their new book chronicling state

historical markers Thursday at the State Capitol Building Rotunda.

The book, "Traveling New Mexico, a Guide to the Historical and State

Park Markers," details the historical facts presented on the more than

500 historical markers around the state. The guide gives the locations

of the markers and additional information for each.

Archuletta's Mountainair highway sign company, P&M Signs, is in the

process of replacing all the markers in the state, which highlight sites

Founded in 1991, P&M Signs employs 20, and manufactures many of the

Subject: [AMERICAN_ROAD] Buffalo Ranch - Good and Bad news

I drove over to Buffalo Ranch (what's left of it) this morning and

talked to the new owner, a very nice gentleman. The bad news is that

it's definitely been bought and will be razed. The new structure on

the property will be a "travel center", according to the owner, which

I presume means truck stop/gas station complex. The owner said that

he grew up spending time at Buffalo Ranch and considers it a bit of

nostalgia for himself as well as others, so he'll be keeping

the "feel" of the place, calling it Buffalo Ranch, and (would you

believe) even bringing back a herd of buffalos for tourists to see!

And, this is the VERY good news (for me, at least).... I asked him

what was going to happen to the old signs on the property, and he

asked if I wanted them! I said "YES, OF COURSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!",

with my heart racing in my chest. "Fine", he said. "They're yours,

if you'll display them in your gas station, and if you can haul them

away". Oh my gosh!!! The signs are mine! He said he wants to

keep some of the signs to put up in the new building, but I can have

the rest. There are some others hidden away in one of the buildings

I can have as well, he said. It was too rainy and muddy (and still

partially dark) this morning to go into the building, but I'll go

back on Monday, at his suggestion, to explore what's available. I

can't begin to tell you how excited I am about this. The signs will

remain -- if not on the original buildings -- at least in the same

town! I'm thinking now about devoting a good part of Afton Station

to Buffalo Ranch and all the goodies I've collected from it.

So, although it seems we can't always completely stop the wheels of

progress, I guess we can slow them a little, and, if nothing else, we

can do our best to preserve the nostalgia. I'm tryin'!

Greetings All!

While exploring an old abandoned Katy Railroad line the other day,

and I came across a vintage porcelain steel sign mostly buried under

the dirt. After unearthing the heavy beast I discovered it was a 4

foot "United States Tire Company" sign. I've searched the internet

hopelessly for info on that company. Cannot find a single bit of

history except two folks selling a magazine ad for that company from

magazines dating in 1914 and 1917. (At least the company was a fairly

old one!) That company also used the name "U.S. Tire Co.". Does

anyone here know what years this tire company existed? Let me know.

Thanks!

God Bless and Happy Trails.

Veterans Stadium implosion scheduled for March

Veterans Stadium, Philadelphia's home for sports entertainment

from 1971 through 2003, will be imploded at 7 a.m. on Sunday,

March 21, the City of Philadelphia and the Phillies announced

today.

It will take approximately 58 seconds to implode the building.

During the past few months, work has been underway with the

conventional demolition of Veterans Stadium. Much has been

removed from the Vet including concrete ramps, the podium

level, lower seating bowl, lights, roofing and the Liberty Bell. By

the time March 21 comes around, the Vet will have been reduced

to a virtual concrete skeleton.

If I'm not mistaken, and I could be, that's the original name for

Uniroyal tires.

I'm basing that on the commercial where the hand came out of the tire

and grabbed hold of the road surface.

Oh yes, you can still order the 66th issue of RIVER STYX. It's the most

Here is a copy of an article that I found the other day,

From the AP Atlanta,

Clark Byers, who painted Southern barns with "See Rock City" slogan that was

perhaps better known than the attraction itself, died Thursday after months

of failing health, friends said. He was 89.

For three decades beginning in 1937, Byers braved slippery roofs and even a

charging bull to paint some 900 barns in 19 states, mainly in the rural

south.

Using black paint that he said was virtually fade-free, he painted the

barns for free for willing farmers, throwing in Rock City souvenirs as a bonus.

The slogans, including "See Rock City" and "To miss Rock City would be a

pity" promoted a collections of buildings atop of Lookout Mountain in

Chattanooga, Tenn., that were constructed form the mountain's stone.

"Clark, literally and figuratively, enhanced the landscape of America," said

Bill Chapin, president of See Rock City INC. and the great nephew of the

attraction's founder, Garnet Carter

My apologies for missing these notes last months folks. I was in the middle

of a job search and planning vacation, so thar's my excuse. ;-) I already

freed up the space "Arab Person" used and dropped a MOAB on his messages.

However, I didn't have a chance to axe him since he was already being

"bounced" by Yahoo Groups for having e-mail returned to them. However, I did

execute a successful sortie on our other person who posted some less than

flattering links to the files section today.

Hank,

There's a Quigleys in Barstow on Lenwood Rd. Maybe it's just a coincidence,

I need the assistance of you "roadies" out there. I have a friend, George

historian for the Wrightwood Historical Society. He is doing an article about

US Hwy 138 and it's junction [the Cajon pass area] with Route 66 circa 1960s.

He is specifically interested in any information anyone might have about a

138. Apparently, it was in the right-of-way and was torn down when the

That wonderful newsletter happens, coincidentally, to be created and edited

by Ron McCoy, who is a member of this very eGroup! He's been writing and

researching it monthly for 9 years. Isn't it great? For those who wish to

For the last several weeks I have been checking my mail box, and last

evening when I got my mail, I had received my first issue of the American

Road magazine. I just want to say how great it is and I spent last night

starting from the first page to read toward the last page. I like what I

have been reading. Great job Thomas, Rebecca, Jim and everyone.
