I must disagree with Mike's statement that Route 66 in the Texas Panhandle

is "boring".

For example: The extensive remains of portland concrete east of Mclean!

The restored Tower Conoco/Udrop inn (with fantastic neon) in Shamrock!

The Devil's Rope/Route 66 Museum in McLean, and their restored Phillips 66

station!

Delbert and Ruth Trew!!!!!

Drivable old dirt 66 between McLean and Alanreed (plus the old gas station

in Alanreed)!

The Route 66 rest Area with Rte 66 Themed exhibits and play Areas!

The driveable remnants of the Jericho Gap!

The Giant Cross in Groom!

Amarillo Blvds old motels and relics!

West 6th St's antique stores, etc!

Cadillac Ranch (not on 66 but close enough)!

The restored Magnolia station in Vega!

The Midpoint Cafe in Adrian!

The barking dogs in Glenrio! (tounge in cheek mode)

And so much more I've not mentioned (including more wonderful people)!

Enjoying Route 66 depends on your state of mind. If you go in expecting a

OK kids (and I mean that in every sense of the word), am I gonna have

to stop this car??? From this point on, we're ending this whole

thread of recertify, recommission, rehash, retread, whatever, of

Route 66. Period. End of discussion. This thread is on two Route 66

egroups...keep it there. Since I keep hearing about "the majority

thinks this, that, and the other"....well, as the American Road e-

group dictator, let me tell you, the majority here is sick of hearing

it. From BOTH SIDES! The Dictatoress posted our Speed Limits a few

days ago. Apparently since "recommission" or "poll" wasn't in the

subject heading, some of you passed over it.

Finger pointing and accusations ARE NOT what this board is about.

Hate to disappoint you, but that's not the way we work here. This

board, unlike the others, has very active monitors whose goal for it

is to maintain the same integrity that American Road magazine

maintains. That is not only our goal, but the goal of Thomas and

Becky Repp who asked us to drive this car for them. Some of you on

both sides of the issue are good friends. Don't expect that because

we're friends you'll get any slack. This isn't anything personal

folks, just business. So kindly remember this note. Failure to

comply will likely result in your member status being shifted

to "Moderated".

Pat and I co-moderate this Yahoo Group on behalf of American Road

Magazine. Our purpose is to bring together people who enjoy a love of

ALL old roads, road travel, etc. not just Route 66. Of course, we

don't exclude Route 66 from any discussions. We * always * encourage

a variety of discussions and respectful debates, and we don't like to

censor or moderate the list to the point of editing or deleting

posts. We rarely do that; so far the group has been pretty good.

Our new policy of initially moderating new members has eliminated

spam posts.

While this particular discussion involving the recertification of

Route 66 is most interesting and valid, we feel that it is being

discussed, debated and fought over ad nauseum on multiple threads on

multiple forums and it is getting out of hand. In addition, the

controversy of this discussion is heating up emotions, sparking some

snide and nasty commentary and divisiveness. As a participant on the

two Route 66 Groups (not a moderator), my options are to read, ignore

or comment on any discussion as I choose.

However, as co-moderator of this group, I feel that this issue does

not serve the majority of American Road list members well, many of

whom are not interested in Route 66, or not as much as they are other

roads. Additionally, many of the people on this list who are

actively involved in this discussion are also on the other Route 66

lists and posting the same or similar messages on all groups. Lastly,

this subject is generataing a lot of ill will among members on other

lists (who are also members of this list), and creating circumstances

which are against our SPEED LIMITS and the type of atmosphere we want

to maintain here. On this list, we actively encourage and maintain a

friendly atmosphere and I want to keep it that way.

Thomas Repp has stated numerous times that American Road Magazine is

very interested in preservation of all roads, landmarks, etc. If

Thomas desires or feels compelled to do so, I will leave it to him to

comment on American Road's position. Regardless of opinion of the

subject at hand, I expect any posts on here to be respectful. I

posted the SPEED LIMITS a few days ago in hopes that would convey the

fact that we don't want fights here.

Any action I (or Pat) will undertake to moderate this list and

maintain a friendly and respectful atmosphere on this list is NOT

reflective of an opinion on this Route 66 issue, either personally or

on behalf of American Road (I posted my opinions below in a messaged

titled "Advertising Campaign." Nor are our actions personal for or

against anyone, or should be construed as taking sides. I know many

of you personally and you are wonderful friends. But when Pat and I

accepted the request to moderate the list, part of that

responsibility is to maintain order, keep the conversations relevant

to ALL members, limit personal discussions (chatty posts), and above

all, personal attacks. We do this on behalf of all the members, and

for American Road.

Pat and I want the discussion of re-certification of Route 66 ended

on this list, or we will have to change individuals' status to

moderated, or else we moderate the all posts on the list.

Hi all,

Just returned from a brief trip and for those of you interested in

great neon, Roanoke, Va has 3 super examples. On Mill Mountain, the

Roanoke Star glows brightly each night in red, white and blue,

celebrating patriotism and Roanoke as the "Star City of the South."

Also prominent in downtown, two great neon advertising signs which are

in the process of being restored and will be relit. The Dr. Pepper sign

and the H & C Coffee sign, which greeted travelers coming into the city

on the Norfolk and Western Railway. The Star can be seen from various

points in the city and from I-581 as well, the other two from I-581 and

a great view of those two from the restored Norfolk & Western passenger

terminal, now restored as the O.Winston Link museum, housing GREAT

black and white photos of the era of the Norfolk and Western steam

engines, as well as N & W RR memorabilia. This museum is just down the

hill from the fabulous Hotel Roanoke, restored to its 1882 elegance by

Virgina Tech, which was the recipient of the hotel as donated by the N &

W. There is also a Transportation Museum near downtown, housing the

last two N & W steam engines as well as a super open-air farmer's market

in the historic downtown area, and let's not forget the Roanoke Weiner

Co. and the Texas Grill, both city favorites of long standing. Within

the next few days I'll post some photos to the yahoo photo site for AR.

Cheers, ... and happy fourth!

Those are excellent!!!! Thanks for posting something I can add to my

"Favorites--Trailers" folder. :-) Other items in that folder include

Vintage Campers (http://www.vintagecampers.com) and T@B trailers

My husband and I have been talking about buying an old trailer someday and

restoring it, or maybe buying a new, but retro-style, lightweight one

instead. We saw the T@B trailers on a show on HGTV and really got

interested in them, but the idea of restoring one has a lot of appeal too.

I'm sure we have a highly romanticized view of the RV lifestyle, but it

just seems like so much fun to travel with your own hotel room--especially

one with a Dixie stove. :-)

A month ago, I would not have been certain that US 62 even existed. Now,

after enjoying a wonderful stretch at the OH-PA border plus driving that bit

in KY, I'm with you: I'd like to do the whole thing. This road seems really

promising. I'm putting stuff on the list much faster than I'm taking them

off.

One of these days I want to drive the whole US 62 - it stairsteps from

it goes. The route is really crazy - does anyone know how it got

I can drive home on US 54 - El Paso to Chicago.

We saw a herd of horses with a Bar S mark on them; also a herd of goats...a

few birds, and a nice little wasp nest at the gas station...I for one find

Texas to be extremely cool from the lonesome-ness of Glenrio, to the nice

folks at the midpoint in Adrian, to Dot at the mini museum, to the Big Texan

in Amarillo, to the literally multipurpose building in Alanreed, to the

folks at the Barbed wire museum in McClean, to the good folks in Shamrock

who brought the U-Drop back in all its glory! Tsingtao, Kip

I've always found the Panhandle of Texas to be lovely in its own way.

I grew up on the prairie of central Illinois, and driving across the

western half of the Panhandle reminds me of my old home very much.

It's comforting to be driving along old 66 and seeing nothing but

cows, grassland and the occasional windmill.

For a fine novel about the Panhandle, read "That Old Ace in the

Hole." I think it captures that area about as well as anything I've

read.

Kip,

I don't know if it's a trend or not, but I was in Lubbock, Texas over the

weekend to see Shellee Graham's traveling Route 66 photographic exhibition at

Texas Tech. University, and the people there told me there is a new drive-in

theater being built near Lubbock. Incidentally, the Buddy Holly Center there is

a must-see if you're ever in west Texas.

Twas reading the Post Dispatch the other day, and read about this dude who is

BUILDING a NEW DRIVE-IN theatre in Salem IL (on U.S. 50, no less)...reminded me

of the dude who built a NEW COVERED BRIDGE outside Greenup IL on the old

National Road...while it may seem like the blue highways are not birthing new

babies, little sprouts like this make you aware that there is still life on the

roads less travelled! Tsingtao, Kip Welborn, from the CITY of St. Louis, MO

Jim, it *is* a trend -- they are coming back! The Stars & Stripes Drive-in

in Lubbock, Texas is scheduled to open August 19th, next weekend. Go to:

http://www.drive-ins.com/theater/txst10

for pictures and links to newspaper articles related to the Stars & Stripes

drive-in.

ALSO -- I know of *another* NEW Drive-in being built in Texas, but I have

been sworn to secrecy about its location by the owners/builders, until they

have a firm opening date. They don't want to jump the gun like the S&S owners

have.. giving out opening target dates only to miss them. I can tell you

that this new drive-in will be HUGE -- starting with three screens, and

adding more. They owners/builders have a lot of experience building and

operating drive-ins; at least three successful DIs in the southeastern part

of the country. They owners contacted me through my Texas Drive-ins Group

about photographing and documenting the build process, and I will have

pictures on my web site as soon as I get approval from the the owners.

Speaking of my web site, I am the new group owner of the Texas Drive-ins

group at:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/txdrivein/

We are a small group of 27 members but could always use more!! I also have

a web page listing open Texas Drive-ins at:

http://www.worley-world.com/txdriveins/

Thats it for now---

Jim,

Another great music icon died on California Statehood Day:

Warren Zevon! Just like Johnny, I'm gonna miss this fellow too!

Warren's days were numbered in advance since his diagnosis of cancer.

He just had enough time left to finish up an album called The Wind,

which was a collaboration with all his friends joining in! He too was

a one man show in concert! His last live appearance was on the David

Letterman show. His songs are hauntedly truthful with a twist of

sometime sarcasm. Other great musicians like Jackson Browne, David

Gilmour, Linda Ronstadt, and countless others played with Warren and

covered some of his fine tunes! If you get a chance, listen

to "Searching for a Heart" while cruisin' Route 66. You'll be hooked.

Him and Johnny are definitely jammin' the high heavens this week!

Thanks Boys! For the many great years of sharing your music!

God Bless and Happy Jams.

We need to know all events, business, or happenings that will be having

significant anniversaries in 2005. We are looking to include them in our

marketing plan for the 2005 Rendezvous and Route 66 International Festival.

Birthdays, deaths or similar dates if important to the road could also be

added.

For instance the Pontiac turns 80 in 2006 as does Route 66. We are using

that theme for our POCI conference to be held in Ontario, CA. This is the

type of information we want for 2005.

May 15th, 2005 will be the 100th anniversary of the auction of railroad lots

that created a town called Las Vegas. The world's largest party is planned at

the Fremont Street site.

Vegas is only 100 miles from Kingman and the Mother Road. Come join us!

Greetings Alex,

Not quite sure that you can get to Neuevo Laredo from Michigan on

either of those exact particular directions. You see, from Indy I-70

goes to Saint Louis (then further to Kansas City). From Saint Louis,

one will have take I-44 (or Route 66) to Oklahoma city, then onto I-

35 to the border patrol check point. Or,...from Indy, stay on I-70 to

Kansas City, then hop onto I-35 to New Laredo.

Another cool route would be to take I-65 from Indy to Elizabethtown,

KY. From there latch onto old U.S. 62 west all the way to El Paso.

(Going east on U.S. 62 will get you to the Canadian border at Niagra

Falls.) What's cool is that U.S. 62 has a similar small town road

history like Route 66 does. Old filling stations, Mom and Pop stores

and restaurants, non franchised motels, neon road icons, etc...

God Bless and Happy Trails.
