Things are heating up in the state of Utah as to what to call US-Highway 6: Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Highway or the Michael Dmitrich Memorial Highway after a retired colleague.

Recently, Utah lawmakers passed a bill naming it the latter. After the local SUVCW (Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War) notified them that it already had a name, lawmakers said they were unaware of it.

Now, there seems to be an impasse, even though the SUVCW are ok with both names being on it, as long as the GAR has top-billing.

It has been a long time since the Grand Army of the Republic "Memorial" Highway has received this much needed attention in Utah. The GAR has the full support of the U.S. Route 6 Tourist Association. www.route6tour.com

    Item of Interest:

The Association is currently in the process of making a Documentary Movie about U.S. 6. (See Attachment)

  2. The sign looks similar to the ones used in California. They are small, though usually black / white only. Older signs had yellow on them as well. Beyond that, I can't really help.

    Hello:

I have found that the Grand Army of the Republic Highway signs vary, depending on the year and the state chapter. You will not find any state ID's on the back side since they are provide by the individual state chapeters to the various road departments. The basic design has alway remained the same.

For pictures of the origional signs you can email me a RussUSRoute6@aol.com

  3. A center like this would be good to help all of us when attempting to travel the US Route 6. The people along the route should realize that no matter where on the highway the center is located, it will be a boost for their tourism as well. Hope this is not the end of the plans.

    Hello Dave:

The proposed National Museum and Visitors Center is part of our cultural preservation and economic development program. The Master Plan still stands. We are now looking for that special Route 6 community that would be interested in working with us.

The U.S. Route 6 Tourist Assn. is not in the real estate business. The National facility would be owned and operated by a local Not-for-profit IRS 501 © (3). Our Board of Directors would sign an agreement of support acknowledging that the National Museum would work with regional museums in all of the 14 Route 6 states.

Recent interest has come from existing museums in the western states.

    Holyoke, Colorado

    Green River and Delta, Utah

    Santa Clarita and Lancaster, California

If you know of an organization that may be interested, have them contact me at RussUSRoute6@aol.com

We are also looking for a new Executive Director of Museum and Visitor Centers.

If anyone is interested in old US 6 maps, pictures, etc. (prior to 1956) they can email us at ArchivesUSRoute6@aol.com

Thanks for your interest in the Grand Old Highway.

The U.S. Route 6 Tourist Assn. has some great pictures of Beale's Cut in our Archives. The "Cut" still exists and we have some air photos with overlays showing the current location.

I sure would like to learn more about the old maps that you have. Maybe you could have copies made for our archives. We would cover the expense of printing and mailing. You can contact me directly at RussUSRoute6@aol.com.

  5. Hello Folks:

This portion of the U.S. 6 Forum is where you can post media activity. If there is news relating to Route 6 in your neighborhood feel free to post it so others can see what's happening. Be sure to give the subject a title and date.

The story / article will be posted on the "In The News" portion of the U.S. Route 6 Tourist Association's web site My Webpage

  6. U.S. Route 6 Gallery of Art

I invite you to participate in this new format by submitting pictures and stories about art located along the Grand Old Highway. There are many forms of art ranging from classic and vintage road signs to business signs, and the structural design of historic buildings.

When traveling U.S. 6 I came across many unusual works of art, some in city parks. An example would be the statue in the middle of the Town of Fruita, Colorado. There is a bronze statue dedicated to "Mike the headless chicken." Yes, Mike does have his own web site. (A true story!)

There is also the art that addresses our American Heritage in the form of dress, music, food and culture. My personal opinion, "food" is an art form! However, at some point we should start a new topic that addresses speciality and/or ethnic foods. Another would be classic diners along the historic highway. If there is a connoisseur out there, we would like to hear from you.

Lets not forget Native American art. There is some great stone art located just north of the "6" near the community of Thompson, Utah.

Time to get out your camera and take some pictures. Be sure to ID your pictures with locations and dates.

Look forward to the new entries.

    Russ L.

PS: When driving down the road, be sure to look for some of those artistic rural mail boxes!
  7. One of those great roads, that US-6. We've got a nice stretch here in Illinois, but I haven't driven a lot of it yet. We have driven parts of it in Iowa.

Hello "RoadDog" and all members of this FORUM:

We have a large Route 6 wall map here in the office and it would be great if each person would provide the name of the state and town that they live in. We would stick a pin in the map, this would give us an idea of the coverage we are receiving on the FORUM. This would also give me a better idea of how to respond to questions, i.e. :-)

  8. Denny,

I didn't even know there were other states, just Ohio and Pennsylvania. Thanks for the web site update which is now on my travel favorites list...

Thank you for your interest in the Grand Old Highway.

Most roads have their view points so you can stop and look out over the country. Old U.S. 6 has that special view point as it crosses over the Colorado Rockies. Stop and take a look from Route 6 at 11,992 feet above sea level. This is located at the top of Loveland Pass. A beautiful drive above tree level. This is the highest point of any U.S. Route.

  9. Hello from the U.S. Route 6 Tourist Association. The Association is a

Not-for-profit IRS 501 © (3) dedicated to the economic development and cultural

preservation of the inner-cities, small towns and rural communities located

along all 3,652 miles of the Grand Old Highway.

I look forward to exchanging information and ideas using this format

provided by American Road. This will be a first for me, another "fun" learning

    experience.

    Feel free to ask questions.
