    Good to see this resurrected.

     

    I didn't have access to much bandwidth when it was first posted and today is the first I've had a chance to listen. There are now two posts in Foster's blog and, while both describe the Erika Nelson interview you've mentioned here, both actually point to an interview with Abe Lincoln presenter Lewis Clymer.

  6. American Road Foundation Conference

    Hi Russell,

     

    Thanks for posting.

     

    First, yes, unfortunately, the in-person conference has been postponed until 2012. However, we are going to host five virtual meetings instead - the dates are currently being finalized and we will make an announcement in the next few weeks. The board and the conference committee are going to meet in person in Joliet on the 22nd of this month.

     

    The in-person conference was canceled because we received feedback from many people that they could not obtain approval for travel expenses this year given the present budget situation many states are facing.

     

    The Foundation would be very interested in discussing your collection and how we might work together. Your timing is perfect, as we are considering projects for the Foundation at the upcoming board meeting. Please contact me at becky@americanroadmagazine.com to discuss this further.

  10. Welcome - Please Introduce Yourself!

    Stopping by to say hello and introduce myself which seems to be customary here and what a nice custom it is. Enjoying reading about everyone's road adventures.

     

    The quickie condensed version road related intro .....

     

    I grew up 2.5 blocks from the Lincoln Hwy in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, even though I knew it was the Lincoln Hwy/Hwy 30, it was just the road to take to get wherever you were going. Friday night dinners were almost always at Ced Rel or the E&R Cafe. Lots of jaunts to Montour over the Bohemie Hills (sorry, no offense, that was what the hills were called then!). Many summer journeys - Iowa to Wyoming and back and forth on Hwy 30 and Hwy 20. Got married, moved to the east coast - DC area, stayed there for 25 years until we just didn't need to be there anymore. Ten years ago we ended up in Fort Madison, Iowa by chance to visit friends and we're still here. So, now Hwy 61 and the Mississippi River run 2 blocks from my front door. Also about 10 years ago discovered driving an annual winter trip to LA was much more fun on Route 66 than flying. So we've traveled various alignments of Route 66 between St Louis & LA multiple times, as far north as Joliet, but still need to spend some more time on the part of Route 66 that is closest to home. Why is it that sometimes the things closest to home are the things we tend to put off? LOL Have a jaunt to DC coming up this month and will travel bits and pieces on the National Road, but it's a quickie biz trip, so not much sightseeing time. We're still on the Lincoln off and on since I still have the house in CR. Lots of lovely Iowa byways nearby. Route 66 in February. But our big plan that we think we'll be able to pull off is to drive the Alcan Hwy summer 2011. Very S L O W L Y because I don't think we'll get to do it often & I want to see as much as possible. Plus, Alaska is the only US state I haven't been to and it's time to check it off the list.

  14. Change Yellowstone Trail Forum Name

    #1 There has been a fair amount of interest in the National Parks Highway, a sponsored, named route that generally followed much of the YT route. The two organizations competed with each other and their histories are intertwined in some respects.

     

    #2 The original motivation for including US 20 with the YT forum is probably not applicable now. Also, US 20 follows only small sections of the YT and those primarily only in the far East. There is little "traffic" about US 20, although it could be kept as part of the Forum without being a problem.

     

    Conclusion: Might we suggest the name of the forum be changed "The Yellowstone Trail and National Parks Highway?" or some such? It is hard to be interested in one and not the other!

    Great minds must think alike! We actually have started to attempt to map some of the index. Its taking a bit of time to figure out how to do it... Perhaps when we have a working sample a few of you would be willing to try it out and give us some feedback on it. More to come!

    Hi Denny,

     

    Thanks for bringing this issue to our attention. Pat checked into it, and I think he replied to you, that there aren't any settings that were changed that would affect this. After looking into this further, it looks as if this was a result of the recent upgrade that we were advised to do by Invision PB. I apologize for any inconvenience it may have caused. The upgrade was primarily done to enhance security in Invision PB to prevent spam, etc. We appreciate everyone's understanding.

  24. National Park Week

    Just for clarification: Do you mean only areas designated as National Parks (I believe there are 58 so designated, although I could be off a couple), or do any and all NPS-administered sites qualify? According to my NPS map and guide, as of 2006 there are 388 such sites in the US and possessions. Included are National Monuments, National Historic Sites, National Historical Parks, etc.

    In addition, there are a growing number of Federally-designated National Monuments that are not administered by the NPS, but by other agencies such as the Bureau of Land Management or the Forest Service. The vast (and amazingly scenic) Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in southern Utah is one such area.

    I am an NPS 'completist' and one of my lifetime goals (now that I have visited all 50 states) is to visit every NPS site. I highlight them in yellow on the abovementioned map as I 'check them off'. I'm probably approaching the halfway mark to bagging all 388!

     

     

    I was trying to simplify and use those only designated as 'National Parks." The next question should be how many NPS administered sites have you visited (the all inclusive definition with National Monuments, National Historic Sites, etc.).

     

    Its going to take me a little while to figure out how many I've visited myself... 1, 2, 3, 4..... (I'll let you know when I've finished counting).
