Things have been really busy at American Road HQ lately. Sara Wilson, our Marketing Manager and Ad Sales Associate will be going on maternity leave for a few months. We're very excited for Sara, but, we will definitely miss her while she's out.
Mike Joyce, our Ad Sales Associate for the Rocky Mountains region is retiring after 45 years in the business. We're going to miss Mike. We hope he has an opportunity to relax and enjoy the American Road!
Stepping in to take over the Rocky Mountain and the Great Plains Regions is Christine Martens. Christine will also serve as Marketing Coordinator. Christine comes to us with nine years of experience at Wausau (Wisconsin) CVB. We are very excited to have Christine join us. Christine is a regular road warrior--she has worked for the Wisconsin Highway 51 Association. Christine's Forum name is WisHxGeek - so, please join me in welcoming Christine.

It looked good. Previous readers were built for mostly text-heavy publications (newspapers, etc.). The image quality on the IPad, however, looked very good. No formatting problems to speak of. So, for those of you with an IPad, the digital edition of American Road is available! Preview the digital edition here: http://americanroadmagazine.com/previewmag.html

I took a quick business trip last month to Austin, Texas. The trip was so short that I had absolutely no time for playing tourist. However, I stayed at a beautiful historic hotel: the Driskill. (I figured that I needed to see something of historic interest while I was in Austin!).
The Driskill was built in 1886 and is listed as one of the Historic Hotels of America. You may read a bit about the history here: http://www.driskillhotel.com/about-texas-hotel.php. An historic time line may be found at: http://www.driskillhotel.com/historic-hotels-timeline.php
The hotel was beautiful and the service was spectacular. The rate for a basic room, after taking advantage of one of their special offers, was comparable to other hotels in the area. There are special price offers at their website: http://www.driskillhotel.com/special-offers.php
The only downside of staying at the Driskill was the road construction taking place downtown. The construction made navigating the downtown area a bit challenging. That inconvenience aside, I would recommend an overnight stay at the Driskill.

If you travel with your pets, as we do, you would appreciate a resource to identify nearby veterinary services in case of an emergency. I found this great website providing a way to search for accredited veterinarian hospitals on your travel route.

I hope it is helpful!

I traveled to Illinois in June. It was a quick business trip. But, I did have an opportunity to meet the great staff of the Illinois Lincoln Highway Coalition: Bonnie Heimbach (Executive Director) and two of her staff (Mary Jo and Sue). You may stop in and visit them at 200 South State Street; Belvidere, Illinois 61008.
If you're traveling the Lincoln Highway in Illinois this summer, be sure to download their trip itinerary: http://www.americanroadmagazine.com/docs/itineraries/IllinoisLHCoalitionItinerary.pdf
and visit their website: http://www.drivelincolnhighway.com/

I took a fast, but fun, trip to Northeast Colorado on business almost two weeks ago. I stayed in Greeley. I had a little time to explore--not nearly enough. Greeley has some wonderful attractions: The Centennial Village (you can take a virtual tour here: http://www.greeleygov.com/Museums/centennialvillage.aspx), the Greeley Freight Station Museum (http://www.gfsm.org/), and a fun little drive-in with great food: JB's.

I recently had the opportunity to drive a section of the Otter Trail Scenic Byway in Minnesota. I enjoyed the small stretch of the Byway that I drove (near Fergus Falls, MN). Attractions along the way:
The World's Largest Otter:

The quaint town of Fergus Falls:

I would have liked to spend a few more days just exploring Fergus Falls and enjoying breakfast every morning at the Viking!
Unfortunately, weather wasn't cooperating with me during the trip—a big snow storm blew in from the West—so my outdoor photos are snow covered.

I started thinking about different ideas for this coming Thanksgiving. Something fun and different. I thought I'd share what I found - just in case it might interest some other people. I will work to post at least two ideas per week until Thanksgiving. Feel free to share ideas in your comments.
Thanksgiving Marketplace. Rugby, Tennessee. November, 27, 2009. Phone: 888-214-3400
Hark back to the 1880s Rugby Christmas. Visit beautifully decorated candle and lamp lit buildings; enjoy music and actors portraying early Rugby colonists; join in carol singing with hot wassail.

Wow, it's been a busy month. I traveled to Atlanta for the Southeast Tourism Society conference. Had a quick, but, beautiful trip, to York, Pennsylvania, and had a great four day road trip (doing research for an upcoming article for the magazine) in Michigan and Ohio.
The leaves on the trees were turning in PA, MI, and Ohio. The weather was crisp, and it was a great time for a road trip!
