It is with a very heavy heart that I write this post. I just learned of the death on June 21 of Robert (Bob) Delgadillo - of Delgadillo's Snow-Cap in Seligman, Arizona on Route 66. Hi Denny, Glad you stopped in the Elk City National Transportation Museum! They have a great facility. American Road® co-produced the documentary with Anderson Productions for the Museum. Thomas scripted and hosted the program. We are actually co-producing another documentary for the new Chandler Route 66 Interpretive Center with Anderson Productions as well. At the request of Lakota Chief Henry Standing Bear, Korczak Ziolkowski, the celebrated New England sculptor, came to carve a memorial in the mystic Black Hills. The peak, for its part, would stand patiently as its spirit was slowly revealed a likeness of the Oglala Lakota chief Tasunke Witko, known as Crazy Horse, that would forever change the face of the American landscape. Work on the Crazy Horse Memorial consumed the remainder of Korczak's life. When he passed away in 1982, his final words to his wife were of the great task unfinished. "You must work on the mountain." Korczak said, "but go slowly so you do it right." Two and one half decades later, Ruth Ziolkowski hears those words echo every day. American Road recently visited with Ruth, now president and CEO of the Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation. She spoke of the memorial's progress, of her late husband's remarkable faith in his cause, and of the circle of children and grandchildren who now surround her, dedicated to completing Korczak's epic labor of love. Hey - wait a minute . . . in one of your previous posts you explained how gas prices are actually not so bad compared to gas prices in 1913 along the Lincoln Highway. (Just needed to tease you a bit). I know prices are definitely higher than we'd like. Unfortunately, it's beyond me on how to solve that issue, but, you might want to take a look at the suggestions on our Road News page on ways to save money. The Waterville Hotel is beautiful. Never stayed there. But, the owner gave us a tour one day when we were stranded waiting for a lock smith to open up the car of the friends we were traveling with. Wenatchee had a drive in movie theatre when we lived in Washington. Might want to see if it still does! I've never been on the tour myself, but, the Applets and Cottlets factory (I believe it's in Cashmere) is supposed to be fun. The candy is good. There are lots of roadside fruit stands in that area selling honey, fruit, etc. Don't know if they'll be in full swing this time of year. But, if they are they usually have some great goodies. There is an old eatery, I think its on US 2 around the turnoff for SR 970. As I recall, they had good burgers. I apologize that I can't remember the name. They were usually VERY busy. If you want to take any side trips - there are some fun places to stop. Looking forward to reading your posts!

Check out our new article on MONEY SAVING road trip ideas at: http://americanroadmagazine.com/road_news/road_news.html CONTINENTAL DIVIDE TRAIL ALLIANCE NEEDS YOUR HELP Pine, Colo. – The Continental Divide Trail Alliance (CDTA) is seeking hundreds of volunteers willing to sacrifice either a few days or a week to help to complete the national treasure that stretches from Canada to Mexico, the Continental Divide Trail (CDT). “We’re looking for people who enjoy activities like digging new trail and moving rocks of various shapes and sizes,” said CDTA’s Director of Volunteer Programs, Susan Westhoff. “It’s a great chance to meet new friends, enjoy spectacular scenery, have a one-of-a-kind outdoor adventure and participate in one of the largest conservation projects in the nation’s history.” Since its inception in 1995, the CDTA’s ambitious volunteer trail building program has put more than 8,500 volunteers on the ground. This year, nearly 60 projects are planned in all five CDT states, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico, at elevations ranging from 4,000 feet to 13,000 feet. Running from Canada to Mexico along the backbone of America, the 3,100 mile-long Continental Divide Trail will be the most significant trail system in the world when complete. Building the trail mile-by-mile, CDTA volunteers have made enormous progress, but much work remains to be done. Last year, volunteers logged 31,225 hours valued at $563,255 of volunteer labor. Often hiking miles through the backcountry to a project site, volunteers build new tread, repair eroded and damaged sections of Trail, and construct bridges and trailheads. Volunteers of all skill levels and backgrounds are needed to build and repair trail, scout planned routes, or serve as Crew Chefs (cooks). No prior experience is necessary. While some projects require backcountry experience, many offer vehicle accessible campsites. Meals are provided on about half of our projects. Though the work can be challenging, CDTA Crew Leaders ensure that everyone has a fun and rewarding experience. This year’s trail projects range from the New Mexico desert to the high peaks of the Colorado Rockies to the majestic scenery of Glacier National Park. The 2007 CDTA Volunteer Program offers backcountry adventure, a way to give back, and a chance to be a part of history as the CDTA builds momentum to complete this national treasure. You did such a great job describing the bridge and the brewery. I cannot add to your terrific testimonial about it. However, I can say we drove that beautiful bridge many times during our 13 years in Washington state. Thomas would give me a history lesson on the brewery every time we drove past! I've not done this trip on a motorcycle, but, I've been to Arches National Park in Utah - and, it is one of my favorite National Parks. There is nothing on earth quite like it (at least that I've seen). There are lots of great hikes (which I certainly couldn't handle anymore with my back injury). But, I look back at that trip fondly. Bryce is also quite spectacular. I'll never forget the time Thomas and I went there. We camped (in a tent) and slept on a roll out mat with sleeping bags. The ground was SOOOO hard. . . no grassy cushion there! Regardless, we had a fabulous time. I highly recommend visiting souther Utah. Becky Repp becky@americanroadmagazine.com

What great tips! Thanks so much for sharing. I especially like the tip about keeping the vehicle dimension measurements on the dashboard.
