  1. What a shame, I remember driving up White Rock Road though Clarksville and getting on old Hwy 50 there when it was a two lane road. A little bit of old history on Clarksville, from the Sacramento Bee years ago. Tales of the Old West told of a sheriff of Clarksville who was getting hard of seeing, who wanted to keep his job. There was a bank robbery and he shot his own son. Dale
  2. I have a SPOT because I'm ride a dirt bike by myself a lot. With SPOT you can send an "OK", "Need Help" or "911" to an email address or cell phone. Track mode it send out your location every ten minutes. There is NO test mode for 911. Dale
  3. No dam road at Davis Dam near Bullhead City, AZ. Heading north my maps showed a road across Davis Dam. When I got to the turn off it a sign said "Road Closed", had a time getting turned around. Dale
  4. You are welcome. It was hard to get a picture without a lot of cables in the way. I took the picture off the road in a wide place on the Boulder City side. I went just passed where "keep out" sign is. Dale
  5. I was at Hoover Dam yesterday and wanted to post a picture on how the bridge is going. http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr153/cwit_99/Bridge.jpg Dale
  6. Dave You have a better tree in Washington, our California tree doesn't shine. Of course I haven't looked it at Google Earth. On my was back yesterday it was too dark and I couldn't take a picture from the other side. The picture I posted took a lot of work in PhotoShop to remove the bugs from my windshield. It came out good for a 70 mph picture. I had to make a quick run back to Sacramento to make my doctor happy. http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr153/c...9/Roadtree2.jpg Dale
  7. As I drove north on Hwy 99 yesterday I took a picture of the trees in the center of the road. http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr153/c...99/Roadtree.jpg You can bearly see the new Deador Cedar on the other side of the palm tree. There used to be a taller Deador Cedar a few years ago. Guess it was a hazard and was cut down. Dale
  8. mga707 is right, picture #Dam1 is from the downstream of the dam on Arizona side and picture #Dam5 is from the downstream of the dam on the California and the dam is a horseshoe U-turn. I didn't take any pictures of the upstream side of the dam. The dam is almost full and would be close to the top of the dam. Dale
  9. Hey Dave, 75% of the dam is below the river bed. Guess there was a fault there??? Or they were afraid it would tip over, who knows?? If you look at the first picture, there a diagram of it: http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr153/c...Parker_Dam4.jpg It would be the second highest dam in the world if it started at the bottom of the river. Dale
  10. Took a ride across Parker Dam today. Mentioned in a thread here earlier there are few dams that you can drive across since 9/11. I know that you can't drive across Folsom Dam in Northern California since 9/11. Parker Dam on the Arizona & California border, about 30 miles south of Lake Havasu City is the deepest damn in the world. Only 1/4 of the 320' are above the Colorado River Bed. 235' of the damn is below the river bed. http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr153/c...Parker_Dam4.jpg Parker Dam was built between 1934 and 1938. It filled up in 1941 and made Lake Havasu. It is a pretty dam, taken from the Arizona (east) side: http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr153/c...Parker_Dam1.jpg Trucks and RV's are not allowed to cross the dam and it is closed from 11pm to 5am each day. http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr153/c...Parker_Dam2.jpg Driving across the dam: http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr153/c...Parker_Dam3.jpg A view from the California (west) side: http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr153/c...Parker_Dam5.jpg A view of of the road from west side: http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr153/c...Parker_Dam6.jpg And, yes the drive from the dam to "Wyatt" Earp, CA is a Back Country Byway. http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr153/c...Parker_Dam7.jpg Hope you enjoy, Dale
  11. Hey Dave, It is seven miles of dirt road into Spencer Hot Springs. There are three pots that are apart there to soak in so it isn't crowded. 130 miles in three directions to the nearest strore. Antelopes and burros around area. Nice place to spend a week. Getting itchy feed and ready to slowly move north and see what adventures are coming up.
  12. As much as I tell the old Hwy 80 at Grey's Well to near Groden's Well is on the south side of I-8. Part of the old Plank Road is also on the south side of the freeway. Lots of people camp on the south side off old hwy 80 to ride the dunes. On the north side they are making a new canal there replacing the old canal and there would not be any way to get to the dunes from north of the freeway. I am parked within 10 miles of the rest stop. I get my water and dump garbage there, so I could check it out. Dale
  13. Great thread you have here, Dave. Nice to see the pictures. I will be sure to check it out late next summer. I was planning on traveling that old road when I leave Spencer Hot Springs, east of Austin to visit some more hot springs south of Middlegate. Dale
  14. Hey Dave, I didn't notice the old motel, but I'll check it out next year. Have fun here. Dale
  15. Hey Guys, keep it up all this interesting to me. I don't own this thread. Neat to hear about Tom Mix's death. Dale
  16. I sure hope ADOT doesn't close the bridge. In late Jan. I travel from Quartzsite to Ajo and turnoff I-10 at Tonopah (exit 94) and take Buckeye-Salome Road to Old US-80 to Gila Bend. It sure is better than Interstate and dead trap 85. Next I'm planning a trip on El Camino del Dialbo from Ajo, AZ to Welton, AZ. Over 100 miles of 4x4 dirt Road. Dale
  17. I did continue to Gila Bend, didn't stop at Space Age Lodge as I travel in a motorhome and was on my way to Ajo. The dam looks pretty good as it is now, broken. Hey Denny, we stopped at the Space Age Resaurant to have breakfast yesterday and the flying saucers were hiding. ha ha
  18. Traveling south yesterday we drove across the Gillespie Dam Bridge on Old US 80. http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr153/c...9/Bridge004.jpg The bridge opened on August 1, 1927 and handled US 80 traffic until 1956. Link to story here: http://pr.state.az.us/partnerships/shpo/na...llespiedam.html Gillespie Dam had better times. http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr153/c...9/Bridge002.jpg Dale
  19. That was a fast reply Moblene. When I clicked on your Google Earth link, it brought me to Winterhaven about a mile or so away. Try putting 32 43.717 N 114 36.939 W in the "fly to box". Dale
  20. As you travel I-8 from Winterhaven, CA to Yuma, AZ you will see a couple of old bridges to the east. At night the Ocean to Ocean Hwy Bridge is lite up and very pretty seeing as how it was made in 1915. This is the first bridge build across the Colorado River and for the first time a car could drive across the Southern USA without getting on a ferry. It was desgned in Washington by government engineers who knew nothing of the unpredictable Colorado River. http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr153/cwit_99/O2O_1.jpg The historic marker near the bridge the tells of the problems building it. http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr153/cwit_99/O2O_2.jpg A picture taken on the Yuma side shows how the bridges are today. The bridge on the right is a rail road bridge build in 1923 and is still used today on the main line. The Ocean to Ocean bridge is now a one way bridge with a traffic signial light. http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr153/cwit_99/O2O_3.jpg Another picture of the bridge today. http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr153/cwit_99/O2O_4.jpg A close up of the date marker on the railroad bridge http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr153/cwit_99/O2O_5.jpg Dale
  21. If you want to visit the Plank Road, be sure not to it in the summer time. Like it was 99 degrees yesterday, Oct 18 th. Which is hotter than normal, but I have seen 108 this time of the year. As I went in off Grays Well Road, I was asked to buy a permit to camp on the dunes. I told them I was sight seeing and didn't have to buy any (stinking) permit. It is very crowded on long weekends in the winter time, like 200,000 on Thanksgiving weekend on the whole dunes area From Gray's Well to Glamis.
  22. Being camped near the Imperial (Algodones Dunes also) Dunes, I took some pictures today to post in this group. The Plank Road was used from 1915 to 1927 when they build US 80 through the dunes. http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr153/cwit_99/Plank.jpg Driving the frontage road to the plank road today, which some was US 80 before I-8, you can see the road sanded over from winds we had last week. http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr153/cwit_99/Plank2.jpg About 4 miles west of Winterhaven, CA (across the river from Yuma, AZ) on old US 80 is the old Butterfield Stage Stop at Araz. http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr153/cwit_99/Ariz.jpg Dale
  23. I saw the story about it on California's Gold program on PBS. A man from Cal Trans was telling about it, so I guess they planted them. Yeah, I full time in my RV. Next I will show pictures of the wooden road across the Algodones Dunes.
  24. Sure Dave, it is Condor Canyon north a mile or so north of Panaca, Nevada. It is an old Union Pacific Railroad grade. Fairy easy to find going north on 5th street in Panaca off hwy 93 between Pioche and Caliente. The prettist part a the canyon can be reached with two wheel drive, after the creek crossing it is 4x4. The canyon only lasts for a couple miles before it opens up and isn't as pretty. Here is a link to it: http://www.riderplanet-usa.com/atv/trails/...5/ride_1f9f.htm By shortening the URL above you can link to all of Nevada trails or by going farther back the whole USA. Here is some more pictures of it. http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr153/c...99/CondorC3.jpg http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr153/c...99/CondorC6.jpg http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr153/c...99/CondorC7.jpg Dale
  25. Hey Dave, I found Photo Bucket today, it is a free picture hosting site. Here is a test pictures of the old railroad grade out of Panaca, NV. http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr153/c...99/CondorC2.jpg Dale
