  1. One thing about Denny's road trip reports is that they get the blood stirring - make's one want to head out to anywhere just to see what's around the corner. Thanks for the "armchair" road trip Denny - great as always. You need to put all this in book form!!! Hudsonly, Alex Burr Memphis, TN
  2. Ara, I, too, had the chemically induced stress test last year. Which is why, this year, I insisted on the treadmill. About as much fun as hitting your finger with a hammer - and I think I'd prefer the hammer instead. But the weird feelings go away - the memory, however, stays. I fell like somebody dropped a building on top of me. Most of what went thru my head was "this can't be right!!! Somebody made a big mistake!!" The strange part of the treadmill this year was I went into my test with my knee and ankle bothering me, as they have for some time as I've grown older - to much fun in my "youth", I think. However, I made it completely thru the treadmill test, for the first time in several years, with no aches or pains in my knee (left) or ankle (right). And have had only minor aches - usually when I get up in the morning. Once I start moving around all is well. Go figure. Y'all take care, now. Hudsonly, Alex Burr Memphis, TN
  3. Wonderful - just wonderful. Gas is down to $1.50 to $1.75 a gallon (depending on where you are); prices in the stores (Wal Mart, Best Buy, etc) are going thru the floor; food prices have got to start coming down shortly) - and here I sit, near the end of the month, with a bank account that's about flat!!!!!!!!!! All these great bargains. If they were selling steam boats over on Ole Missy for 25 cents a boat 'bout all I could do is run up and down the river bank yelling "AIN'T THAT CHEAP!!!!!" Best advice I can give everybody is stop worrying - things WILL get better. Hudsonly, Alex Burr Memphis, TN
  4. Maybe this will sound off the wall - but check the skies sometime for a hawk. I've sent one to watch over you. If you see one, you will know all will be well. You are in our thoughts each day. Hudsonly, Alex Burr Memphis, TN
  5. I don't know. The govm't bailed out Lockheed-Martin, as I recall - I'm still waiting for my private airplane; govm't bailed out Chysler a while back - I'm still waiting for my new car; govm't bailed out the savings and loan companies back when - I still havn't seen any extra cash in my bank account; govm't gave AIG millions - and the company big wigs went out and threw a big party (twice), but I didn't get an invite. 6. That's one smart traveling companion you have - of course he's not going to complain. He knows the alternative is to get out and walk!!!! LOL Hudsonly, Alex Burr Memphis, TN
  7. Memphis is still hanging on at around $2.10 for regular in my neighborhood - tho gasbuddy.com points to stations all around me running from $1.75 to $1.85. Hudsonly, Alex Burr Memphis, TN
  8. Ah for the good old days, when you could run thru Gatlinbug at 70+ - at 2 in the morning that is AND if some unfriendly person was behind you somewhere. Hudsonly, Alex Burr Memphis, TN
  9. Not to worry gentlemen - I imagine the streets will be open again after January. President-elect Obama will be residing in Washington. Hudsonly, Alex Burr
  10. Hmmmmmmmm - old shield on a road to nowhere; dark night, couple crescent wrenches.................... Or maybe a battery powered sawzall - top half of the post and the sign. Hudsonly, Alex Burr Memphis, TN
  11. The 25E tunnel thru Cumberland Gap is far less interesting than the old road over Cumberland Gap. One of those places I wish they'd left alone. Hudsonly, Alex Burr Memphis, TN
  12. What's it for - birds, maybe, or deer, foxes, other wild critters???????? A better question might be where went the road that the stop sign is/was on?? It looks like a torn up road bed over to the right by the No Turning (think that's what it is) sign. Hudsonly, Alex Burr Memphis, TN
  13. Sorry to hear you're a little bum!!! Having "been-there-done-that" I really wouldn't want to do it again, thank you. It tends to give you a whole new outlook on life - I've been 4 years trouble free after my heart problems - my last checkup showed no change over the previous 3 years, so whatever I'm doing must be right. You just have to watch your diet, keep the bad foods in moderation and take each day as a new beginning. Here's wishing you many, many more travels over the highways and by-ways, both on the road and on your journey thru life. As I've said before we look forward to your writtings each day. Hudsonly, Alex Burr Memphis, TN
  14. Oh darn!! Well, I just renewed last month so I should be entered. Hudsonly, Alex Burr Memphis, TN
  15. Does this mean if you renew for 2 years, you get entered twice?? LOL Hudsonly, Alex Burr Memphis, TN
  16. Somebody posted the following web site on the Hudson Car Club Forum tonight. It'll take (some of us) back to when we were teens. Not road related?? I think so. http://thefiftiesandsixties.com/CarsWeDrove.htm Enjoy a trip back in time. Hudsonly, Alex Burr Memphis, TN
  17. Not having a whole heck of a lot else to do with my life, I decided this morning to take one last look at the venerable old gal. I got to her mooring spot - and didn't see her!!!! At first. There was a big surprise at the Park - I've posted 3 more pictures on my Gallery site - take a look. And, yes, Denny, I noticed the neglect of the wheel - maybe that and she looked a little shabby is what caught my attention. Hudsonly, Alex Burr Memphis, TN
  18. Photos of the DELTA QUEEN on her last cruise.
  19. When I followed the Old 61 between Memphis and Blytheville last summer (and one of these days I should put that on my road web site which I've sadly neglected) I used a combination of Google Earth, a 1926 Automobile Blue Book and Microsoft Streets and Trips. It was interesting that from the 1926 starting point in Memphis up to turning off U S 70 in West Memphis onto Missouri Street (the old 61 route before they tied it to the interstate) the milage figures in the Blue Book matched my odometer - to the 10th. And that was starting on 2nd street in downtown Memphis because Main is closed to vehicle traffic for about 8 or 10 blocks. The Blue Book told me that Old 61 made a sharp right turn, then almost immediately made a left turn under the railway, going north, while the modern route veered to the west. Google Earth found that land mark - it is so abrupt a turn it stood out on Google like a beacon. Once we got into that area the milage markers in the Blue Book began to go away because, like 61 south of Memphis, the towns are now mostly a cross-road in the middle of nowhere. I'm going back over the route sometime and see where I end up at the indicated milage markers given in the Blue Book. Hudsonly, Alex Burr Memphis, TN
  20. That is correct - she had to tie up at the park because the river is so low she couldn't get into where she'd normally tie up. There were several passengers standing around the parking lot while I was down there. There was nothing on last night's Memphis news broadcast (at least the station I watch) on her being in Memphis. Actually, I'm not really surprized. Memphis, as historical as it is, doesn't seem to care about it's heritage. About all you see on the evening news is crime stories. We'll see what shows up on tonights news. If you look closely at the photo's I posted there does seem to be an air of finality about the old girl. She looks a bit depressed. Maybe because they had to moor her where they did - somewhat out in the middle of nowhere. The north end of Mud Island conists of the park along the river and is part of the levee. On the back side of that area, to about halfway down toward Memphis proper, are condo's. I'm surprized the residents haven't petitioned to change the name of the island - I mean, you gonna shell out $250,000, minimum, for a condo you want to tell people you live on "Mud" Island?????? LOL Maybe I'll take another run over this morning - I think she's in until later today so maybe there'll be something more going on. I really expected a crowd of sightseers yesterday, but at 10am there wasn't much going on. From what I read she's supposed to make a few more stops on her way south - Helena this weekend, I think, for one. Hudsonly, Alex Burr Memphis, TN
  21. 50 gallons of shine wasn't for me. Some nice gentleman paid me more for one trip into Memphis to the clubs on Beale Street than I made in a month in my Navy pay. LOL ROF Man, most of that stuff I wouldn't touch. Even tequila was safer than moonshine, all to often. Also, with the DELTA QUEEN - it was interesting to see where she tied up. There wasn't, as you can see any dock or bollards, cleats or whatever to tie her to. So they did it like they did back in the day - right to the nearest trees. You could almost close your eyes and hear the colored stevedores chanting as they carried the bales of hay from the plantation fields to the boat and smell the fresh cut pine logs that would have been piled near the river for use in the steamboat fireboxes. Hudsonly, Alex Burr Memphis, TN
  22. I went down to the river today to see the DELTA QUEEN, here in Memphis. I've posted 3 of the better pictures in the Gallery. And while you're over there check out a new photo - Two Lane Blacktop. Just type in Two Lane Blacktop in the search box. Do I know what I'm doing, here?? No, but that doesn't stop me from trying!!!
