BTW, I've spent a fair amount of time exploring old and abandoned alignments of the National Road and US 40 between Indy and Vandalia, IL. Here are some writeups with photos. http://jimgrey.net/Roads/US40/index.htm http://jimgrey.net/Roads/NationalRoadIllinois/index.htm http://jimgrey.net/Roads/INILNationalRoadRevisited/index.htm

Mark, I am inclined to agree that this is the site of the farm near Belleville. I spent half a morning driving up and down 40 around Belleville one day last year with my copy of the Vales' book in hand trying to find the spot and this is the spot I judged most likely to be "it." (I live in Indianapolis, so a trip to Belleville isn't a big deal.) jim

Very much looking forward to photos! And if I shaved with a disposable razor, I'd end up bleeding to death. Rips out the hair on my neck something fierce.

The Abandoned Roads Flickr group grows slowly, with a couple shots from North Carolina just added. This is old US 70. The map shows it as still "there," but this doesn't look very much in use to me: This is old US 220, an unused stub that dead-ends just behind the photographer where current US 220 lies. Hard to believe a US highway could be that narrow:

Star Route / Blue Star Route In Illinois?

I'm going to run against the grain on this one, but I've always thought this motel didn't suit the Speedway property. Bear in mind that I didn't move to Indy until 1994 and that's the timeframe in which my impressions start. But this motel always looked, to me, to be a couple levels below what Speedway seems to be going after. My guess is that they'll build a more modern hotel on the site, one that fits their plan better. jim

That might, just might, be the feature that finally gets me to save up for a GPS unit.

There's always that one state highway that basically takes you to the girl's school on the Westside... it doesn't even leave Marion County! Now that's obscure! Seriously, great report. I totally dig the shot of the Marshall arch. jim

Sounds like you had a nice trip, Denny. Every time I see photos of US 25 in TN I want to go drive it. And we have a Mellow Mushroom up here in Carmel, IN, where I work; good stuff. jim

Ocean To Ocean Hwy Bridge
mobilene replied to DaleS's topic in Old Spanish Trail / U.S. 80 / U.S. 90
That's it, Dale, your coordinates worked. That's the second time this week I've zeroed in on a place in Google Maps, shared the link, TESTED the link to see it worked, shared the link, and then received feedback that the link wasn't pointing to where I pointed it anymore. -

Ohio National Road Association Annual Meeting
mobilene replied to DennyG's topic in National Road / U.S. 40
Very cool on the money -- entering Ohio on 40 from Indiana now is primarily marked by the road narrowing from 4 to 2 lanes, so signage will be welcome!! -
Who's Up For A Sign Museum Visit?
mobilene replied to DennyG's topic in Other Roadside Business / Attractions
Holy cow, I had no idea such a thing existed! I'm already booked this weekend, but this museum just went on my to-do list. -

Brick Lh In Noble County, Indiana
mobilene replied to mobilene's topic in Lincoln Highway / U.S. 30 / U.S. 50
I noticed that too, Chris. Looks to me like a double curve with a straightaway between was made a single smoother curve at some point. If I had to guess, I'd say that the brick was removed in that small southern section. -
What Gasoline Did Captain Midnight Use?

These are great! I love to listen to OTR. I actually already had the Dodge ad on my computer here someplace. jim -
Fellow Michigan Road fan Hoosier Reborn was out doing recon on the LH in Noble County, Indiana, near Ligonier, where he encountered a brick segment of the road left behind when a curve was straightened. It's interesting because it shows how a sharper curve was fashioned in brick. Hoosier Happenings - Follow the Lincoln brick road Map of site If you go to max zoom on the map, you can tell the road is brick. Thought this was cool. jim

Mine has a manual transmission, and depending on trim level and options they weigh between 2,600 and 2,900 pounds. I've never seen one towed. jim

I've seen both the old and new Bridgeton bridges (used to live in that part of the world) and honestly, except for a couple minor details I thought the new bridge was the old, just scrubbed to within an inch of its life and repainted.
