This is Part 2 of our interview at the Indiana Medical History Museum in Indianapolis.

Sometimes the best visits you make during a vacation are those unique, hidden attractions that aren't on the big maps. It's a special little cafe, a unique overlook or a remarkable museum that is full of extraordinary displays. Such was my experience when I visited the Indiana Medical History Museum off US 40, the National Highway, just outside downtown Indianapolis. There I met Mary Ellen Hennessey Nottage, the passionate curator of medical history in Indiana. We conducted the interview as we strolled through what had been the pathology lab for the state's main mental health hospital for more than a century. In Part 2 of our interview you will find out how death provided both a valuable resource in medical study and a compassionate benefit to the deceased's family. This interview was not only remarkable because of the historical artifacts and history of the institution but also because it traced the early efforts to hunt down a cruel disabler and often killer, mental illness.

Tunnel Vision always provides our readers with snapshots of fascinating places along the American Road. Our Autumn 2014 issue featured a story about a Contrary Barber Pole at the National Barber Museum in the Columbus, OH suburb of Canal Winchester. Mike Ippoliti is the curator/director of the huge collection of tonsorial memorabilia and he joins us to talk about a recent tragedy that almost wiped out these beloved mementos of what has been called “the second oldest profession”. Stick around to learn more about the harrowing tale.

The winter 2014-2015 edition of American Road Magazine was for the birds, with lots of wonderful stories and images of birds who have found unique roosts along the American Highway. Since we have our eyes on the skies, we thought that we would bring back a series of podcasts that we did about racing pigeons along Route 66 with Randy Goodpasture.

You only have to mention the words “Route 66” and people all over the world begin to conjure up their own visions of this nostalgic ribbon of American highway. I seriously doubt, however, that many if any of you would identify pigeons with that same stretch of asphalt except on the statue in a town square. However, for our guest in this two-part American Road Trip Talk podcast, Route 66 is a feathery racetrack. Randy Goodpasture is the owner, loft manager and organizer of the Route 66 Race in which the contestants are the noble carrier pigeons capable of speeds for hundreds of miles that will blow your mind.
In Part 2 of our conversation, Randy talks about the unique nature of these powerful pigeons and how he builds a relationship with them that turns out winners. There is even an American Pigeon Museum in Oklahoma City where you can see some of the high flying and decorated war heroes of the flock.

In the rough and tumble days of the late 1800’s, the little town of Sidney, Nebraska was an important military and commercial outpost on the railroad lines that were becoming the arteries of American expansion. It was indeed the Wild West, populated by such colorful characters as Buffalo Bill and Calamity Jane and earned the moniker, Toughest Town on the Tracks.
In 2017 what was once called Sinful Sidney is celebrating its Sesquicentennial ( that’s 150 candles) between Aug. 18-20 with a double extravaganza. One is man-made and the other is Mother Nature made and utterly unique. Our guest Heather Haussmann, Cheyenne County Visitor and Convention Bureau, which is based in Sidney, has all the details for both events.

    ############

    Sinful Sidney’s Sesquicentennial

This summer the “toughest town on the tracks” is rolling out the red carpet for lovers of the Wild West and good old fashioned family fun. Whether you are a classic car enthusiast, history buff or just making plans for a family vacation, you’ll want to save August 18-21 for a visit to Sidney, NE.

If any place knows how to throw a great party, it’s Sidney. Over the last 150 years the town, known as the “Wickedest Town in the West”, has seen the likes of Buffalo Bill, Wild Bill Hickok, and Calamity Jane. Good food, non-stop entertainment, a classic car show and loads of activities for kids will be topped off by two extraordinary light shows. The first one will be a spectacular firework display on Sunday night at the Cheyenne County Fair Grounds. The second one will be a once in a lifetime experience put on Mother Nature.

On Monday, August 21, Western Nebraska will be one of the best places in the country to watch a total eclipse of the sun—make Sidney your hub. This will be the first total solar eclipse visible in continental United States for the 38 years and you will have one of the best seats in the house. Nebraska is one of a few places in the country that will be under the complete blackout as the moon blanks out the sun and day turns to night for nearly 3 minutes. It will be an historic event for young and old alike.

This summer Sinful Sidney 150 will be an awesome opportunity to enjoy a good old fashioned community celebration and get a good night’s rest before witnessing the rare historic event of a total solar eclipse. It’s an experience your family will treasure for the rest of their lives.

Don’t forget to mark the dates, August 18-21, 2017 in Sydney, NE. It’s going to be an unforgettable event that you won’t want to miss. For more information visit cheyennecountytourism.com and follow the celebration on Facebook at “Sinful Sidney 150 Sesquicentennial Celebration.”

Road tours have become immensely popular with our readers and listeners. What better way to enjoy our great national than along its classic two lane arteries? Roads like the National Road, the Lincoln Highway and Route 66 evoke childhood memories for many of us following WWII and the postwar baby boom leading to the arrival of motor courts/motels and wonderful roadside attractions.

This year the National Lincoln Highway Association has organized another wonderful road tour. Organizer Jim Cassler is our guest on this podcast and he spells out the route for the Three Roads Tour 2016. The trip begins in Cumberland, MD on June 17, 2016 and ends 8 days later in Joliet, IL near the Route 66 Museum in downtown Joliet. Jim describes what goes into one of these tours and, while membership for this one is closed, it might just whet your appetite to look for the next road tour you find on a favorite stretch of two lane majesty through the heart of America. You can follow the Three Roads Tour progress by visiting www.lincolnhghwayassoc.org.

Behind all the romance of the motor courts that grew up in the early 50’s, there is a story of dedication and hard work on the part of the families that owned them. In this second part of our conversation, Vicki Royer, talks about how she landed at the Ace Motel in northwest South Dakota. She left home to pursue her own dreams, which took her to the gaming tables of Las Vegas where she became a skilled dealer. I fact Vicki was so good she was chosen to deal cards for the World Championship of Poker. But as they say, there’s no place like home and we pick up the conversation with Vicki Royer as she talks about returning home to help her parents run the family motel in Belle Fourche, South Dakota.

Starting in the1920's the art of neon lighting lit up American roadways and towns from coast to coast. In many ways it was arevolutionary as the digital artistry of today. Curiously, neon lighting made its way into the US from Europe by jumping across the country and landing in Los Angeles, California. So it's fitting that the City of the Angels should be the home of the Museum of Neon Art (MONA)and on this AmericanRoad TripTalk we'll visit with Kim Koga, the museum's director to find out about a splendid display of neon art at the beginnings of one of America's great highways, Route 66. The city of West Hollywood celebrated its 25 anniversary in 2010 by displaying four of the biggest neon signs from the museum collection. After you listen to the interview with Ms. Koga, watch this video which describes the collaboration between MONA and West Hollywood on Santa Monica Blvd. where the famous Mother Road, Route 66 began.

Sticker shock at the pump in 2011 and the fact that this year's Car of the Year at the Detroit International Auto Show was the electric powered Chevrolet Volt seem to indicate that Americans are beginning to take electric cars seriously. Nissan and Ford have joined GM in producing electric vehicles but the biggest limitation seems to be: How far can you go on the batteries?
The State of Washington is tackling this issue head on with their participation in the West Coast Green Highway that will one day stretch from Vancouver, Canada to Baja California. Washington is building a series of rapid recharging stations that will release the electric cars from the urban grid and let them breath the air of wide open spaces. My guest, Tonia Buell, Program Developer and Communications Manager for the Washington State Dept. of Transportation, explains the scope of this great green highway and the schedule for implementation in 2011.

To inaugurate a new era and look at American Road Magazine, we are reviving a feature that has helped our readers dig deeper and enjoy more fully the articles that appear in our quarterly magazine.  Just over 10 years ago we published our first podcast.  American Road Magazine  has been noted for its great photography and prolific prose.  Therefore It was a novel thing, at the time, to introduce a spoken segment as an offering to its readers. In the brief decade since, podcasts have become more and more prevalent forms of communication for everything from newspapers to budding gurus.
Therefore we are launching our shiny, new website with a new series of regular podcasts.  They will focus on the people and places that we visit in the magazine.  Today we travel back to conversations recorded in 2007 with retired Mermaid, Barbara Wynns, whom you can see pictured in her heyday at Weeki Wachee Spring.
We hope that you will enjoy these conversations and join us here often.

In the winter of 2018, American Road Magazine published a 15th Anniversary issue of the magazine to highlight the special people and places we have visited during those years. One of our favorites was Terry “Ike” Clanton, a descendant of one of the cowboys cut down in the infamous battle of the OK Corral. The story has always been seen as a paean to Old West rough justice where retribution was swift and final. "Not so!" says Terry Clanton. So we invite you to listen to a very different side of the story…what famous announcer Paul Harvey used to call…the rest of the story. Here is Terry Clanton in an interview from 2017.  You can read more details in vol. 15, num. 4 of American Road Magazine.
