It’s loud, it’s funky and definitely a whole lot of fun. It’s The Heritage Tractor Adventure in Morris, Illinois held this year from June 8-11, 2012. Nearly 200 vintage tractors that have been lovingly restored and carefully tended take to the road with a roar to celebrate the farmer’s iron work horse and best friend.
To give you some of the history of the Heritage Tractor Adventure we spoke with Max Armstrong, the Voice of Agriculture on WGN Radio for the best part of 40 years. Max's agricultural reports are now heard on a network of smaller stations throughout the Midwest and on the Internet. Max Armstrong is as colorful as the festival that he has organized and you won’t need to be a farmer to catch his enthusiasm for this great family adventure on the American Road.

For the last two years we have followed the progress of one of the most eccentric art projects on the American Road: Bowl Plaza in Lucas, KS. And now the moment of truth has arrived: June 2, 2012 The First Flush.

We met Rosslyn Schultz, the curator of the Grassroots Museum in Lucas, back in 2010. At that point she was midway through the construction of Bowl Plaza, a public restroom/ art project behind the museum built in the shape of an actual toilet. You really need see the photo album on the Grassroots Museum website to appreciate the artwork involved here. While laughter may be one of Rosslyn’s gifts, she and her fellow artists are deadly serious about this artsy outhouse, as you will hear in this interview.

In the spring 2012 edition of American Road Magazine our National Road column features a story about the Indianapolis Speedway. Other than the fact that both surfaces were navigated in cars, you might well ask, how are they related?

In Part I of our two part series on the Indianapolis Speedway entitled Kissing the Golden Brick, my guest is track historian Donald Davidson. He is uniquely qualified to tell the tale of this famous race course since he is its full time historian, a position found nowhere else in the world. Donald tells us in this segment how he came all the way from Great Britain to be the track historian and about how the Indianapolis Speedway was born from a vision that Carl Fisher had to promote the newly introduced automobiles to the American public.

In the spring 2012 edition of American Road Magazine our National Road column features a story Foster Braun wrote about the Indianapolis Speedway. In Part 2 of that series on the Indianapolis Speedway Donald Davidson, the track historian talks about the curious links between super-promoter Carl Fisher and the Speedway, Miami Beach and the birth of the National Road. But Don is most excited when he describes his realm, the magnificent Indianapolis Speedway museum.

During the last 5 years we have interviewed dozens of people behind the articles in our American Road Magazine but this time the subject has to do with one of our regular columns: On the Yellowstone Trail. John and Ann Ridge are a Wisconsin couple who have spent their retirement years uncovering and publicizing the history of the Yellowstone Trail.

In this interview John and Ann take us through the unique history of one of America’s great transcontinental highways developed in the early 1900’s at the same time that the Lincoln Highway was growing. The story of the Yellowstone Trail began in the middle of the country and worked its way west and then east. The history of this Heritage Highway is interwoven with the development of interconnecting roads spurred on by the growing popularity of a marvelous new machine, the personal automobile. Visit John and Ann's Yellowstone Trail website for more information.

Each issue of American Road Magazine has a regular column called On the Yellowstone Trail dedicated to the people and places along this historic highway. The idea for this northernmost of America’s transcontinental highways actually began 100 years ago in the wheat fields of the Midwest. So it’s fitting that one of the centennial parties for the Yellowstone Trail would take place Spring 2012 in northwest Wisconsin. May 11-13th Hudson, Wisconsin on the beautiful St. Croix River will kick off the 100th birthday party with Yellowstone Trail Heritage Days. Andrea Jorgensen of the Hudson Convention and Visitors Bureau has all the details for our American Road listeners.

Our fall issue of American Road Magazine has featured the theme of Gangsters. There have been some very interesting highlights, but possibly one of the most curious among them is the story of Pretty Boy Floyd's death mask. Charles Arthur Floyd's career as Public Enemy#1 ended in a hail of bullets on Oct 22, 1934 near the southeast Ohio town of East Liverpool. His body was transported to the nearest funeral home where we will pick up the story with our guest Susan Anderson. She manages the most recent incarnation of that funeral home, the Sturgis House bed and breakfast.

What is the least favorite part of a trip? No matter where you are headed or how long the trip is, the least pleasant aspect of the journey is usually driving at night. Signs are harder to read, the fellow coming at you won't dim his headlights and there's always the concern that something will dart out in front of you, particularly on winding rural roads. You could decide to drive only in the daytime but for most of us that isn't a reasonable option. Fortunately Dr. Cristina Schinder, Senior Director, Medical Affairs for Johnson and Johnson Vision Care, has great advice that will help you keep trucking through the darkest night, safely.
    Key facts about night driving:
According to a nationwide survey conducted on behalf of Road & Travel magazine and ACUVUE® Brand Contact Lenses, nearly one of every three drivers say they have difficulty seeing all or most of the time while driving in the dark.
Starting at age 20, the amount of light needed to drive doubles every 13 years, so by the time a person is about 60, they'll need 10 times as much light as a 19 year old to see clearly.
The per-mile crash rate for teenage drivers is three times higher after 9 p.m. than during the day.
25% of travel occurs during hours of darkness, and 49% of fatal crashes occur at night.
According to the National Safety Council, the fatality rate at nighttime is three times higher than the daytime rate

If you're guarding America's wealth, you better have a really good lock on your front door, particularly when the year is 1922. It was an era of gangsters and the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland was determined to be ready for anything. That was why they installed the world's largest bank vault door, a 100-ton lid on the nation's cookie jar. In the fall issue of American Road Magazine Erika Nelson tells the story of the monstrous door in her Think Big column. Erika is the owner of the "World'sLargest Collection of the Smallest Replicas of the World's Largest Things." In just a moment she'll give us the full details of one more of the world's largest things that she pursue as part of her art.
