Mary Truitt and Gary Kruger with sleigh bells

These two National Road Association representatives, Mary Truitt and Gary Kruger, are holding a set of bells designed to commemorate the bicentennial journey down the National Road from Vandalia, Il to Cumberland, MD. In the early days of the road, the bells were used as a form of payment for goods and services. The sleigh tree shown here would have been set on the horses harnesses. This is where we get the expression, "I'll be there with bells on!"
